A couple thoughts from today's game

6. You can't get a first down on a defensive offside in a goal to go situation. Half the distance will never equal a first down.

You just figured that out?

My thought was watching Shazier,, look lost at times , easy blocked, non factor. He made one two plays.

This offense is the one we envisioned entering the season. Now granted it was against the damn Clowns but its a step in the right direction. We will be tested on the road against Seattle. Pass protection for Ben that day will be critical to keep him upright.

The defense still lacks that explosive punch, but they're creating turnovers this year. 18 turnovers so far through 10 games. That seems like so much more then what we have been getting in the past couple of years. The secondary is also intercepting balls even if they can't cover for ****. We are 29th in the league in yards allowed but 5th in the league in points allowed.

If we can close 4-2 or better we are going to the dance, most likely as a wild card. The #5 seed is destined to play a ****** AFC South champ, Indy or Houston. Win that and the #2 seed is likely at Cincy then at NE. I can see the path we need to take, we just need to stay healthy and to have the guys execute the game plans.

1. Ben should never start. Always bring him in off the bench. With no pressure, Ben is the man!

2. Can we resign Archer please?

3. JJ may disappear, but he always seems to show up on Fumble Recoveries.

4. AB is an All-pro with Ben. Without Ben, he's Wheaton

5. When the worst rushing defense in the league sells out to stop the run, they can do it.

6. You can't get a first down on a defensive offside in a goal to go situation. Half the distance will never equal a first down.

7. Thanks Gilbert for making sure Ben played. I wonder if he had a deal with Big Ben for that one.

8. This was Ben's second game entering as a Backup. His first was when he entered the game for the injured Maddox his rookie year.

9. Ben just had the most yardage passing by a backup entering the game after a starter goes down.

10. Defense is good at limiting points, not so good at limiting yardage.

11.Ben has 280 yards in the first half and only finishes 7 yards ahead of Johnny SuckBall

12. Bryant is the tall receiver Ben has been asking for his whole career.

13. We can get consistent pressure on the QB when Tuitt and Heyward are playing.

14. If you pull a face mask hard enough, the penalty doesn't seem as bad.

15. After a terrible first half, D Will still finished with over 50yrds rushing.

Thanks Cope. These threads of yours have added a most excellent touch to the forum. THANKS.

I agree, Jones played pretty well. I saw a few holds that Thomas got away with that Jones basically forced him to make because he was beaten. Jones is not a liability when he is on the field, he's just not dropping QB's left and right. He sets the edge well, is starting to develop some pass rushing moves that work, and has a decent bull rush. He's more Clark Haggans that James Harrison right now.

Jones had a solid game, but it was tough to see him leave the field for a late-round rookie (Chickillo--who I like a lot).

They've been rotating OLBs all year. Chick was active ... so, you'd figure he'd be in the rotation.

I don't understand this mentality. Why is it tough? Who cares where someone is drafted as long as they contribute? Deebo was undrafted did you use to get upset when he was on the field over guys that were drafted? DHB was a top ten pick, is it tough to see Bryant out there ahead of him?

That's why some picks will never be accepted by some fans around here. Oh but he was a first round pick he should do more than that.......

It's like when we first drafted Timmons and Woodley was more productive some people said oh just look at like we took Woodley in the first and Timmons in the second. There was so much hate for Timmons his first few seasons here. All because he didn't live up to their view of what a #15 pick should be.

You might get some guy in the first who ends up being more like a 3rd or 4th round talent. Every team gets that, but you also get guys like Bryant in the 4th or Brown in the 6th who end up being first round talent. Shouldn't matter where they are drafted as long as in the grand scheme of things they are able to contribute to winning football.

8 turnovers so far through 10 games. That seems like so much more then what we have been getting in the past couple of years.
Uh, that IS about 2 years worth of turnovers for this defense based on previous standards...

So if Jarvis turns into Haggans and Dupree into Porter will that be ok? They were a pretty good tandem. Or will his status as a first rounder continue for some to label him a bust?

Two big ifs

but sure get Jarvis into a serviceable Haggans I think that would be good enough to not be labeled bust.

Two big ifs at this stage in the game.

Although I am liking what I see from both. Especially Dupree....

I was glad to see Chick on the field. Lets see what he can do. We know Jarvis is only marginal. Maybe, given a bit more playing time, Chick will amount to something. At this point he has only been on the field for a few snaps. A very limited body of work to make any kind of assessment. Jarvis, on the other hand, has a lot of snaps under his belt and very little noteworthy production.

Yet Jarvis is still miles ahead of Chick, which is why JJ saw more snaps

Say what?

Say DeAngelo Williams is not very proficient at catching the ball out of the backfield, thus he needs to work on it.

Did I misspeak?

Because you'd like to think a former first-round linebacker in his third year would have a lockdown on the position rather than have a sixth-round rookie come in and spell him every other series. Nothing like you are making it out to be.

Chickillo wasn't in anywhere NEAR every other series as Jones got 46 defensive snaps and Chikillo got 22. And the only reason that Chikillo got any reps was because of the injury to Harrison. They have been rotating their OLBers all year, keeping them all fresh as best they can. Has nothing to do with Jones talent level, as they've done the same thing on the other side, they've even switched sides a few times as I saw Jones rush from the left and Dupree from the right. It's all in a rotation.

I liked seeing Steelers defensive players flying to the ball, many times you could see two players crashing the ball carrier with furious hits.
