I know, its going to be a long hot wait until training camp starts and there has been lots of pointless topics thrown around but I think this one has some merit.
What if Mitch who I think wins the starting job this summer, it is his to lose, but what if he plays lights out in this offense of Matt Canada and gets the Steelers to the playoffs and even makes the pro bowl? That's not so far fetched as Mitch did QB the Bears to two playoff appearances and even made a pro bowl so no reason to think that is unimaginable with the Steelers.
He's made for this offense since he's mobile and does his best work running out of the pocket and his arm is good enough, not great but good enough. I actually pushed for us to sign him after the season and was excited when the team inked him to a two year deal. He's got a good enough cast of skill players around him but like last year, the OL will be the big question mark.
So what happens if this unfolds into what I mentioned? Do the Steelers try and trade him for a premium draft pick since he would be a hot commodity if he balls out, or do they extend him and prolong Kenny Pickets advancement to starter even longer?
What are everyone's thoughts?

Good topic.
I loved the Trubisky signing for every reason you gave and one more. The Bears had nothing around him and he was still successful. Depending on how he plays I would love to see Pickett sit for a few years. it worked for Rodgers

Yes and what folks don't realize, Mitch had one full year as the starter in college at NC and then got thrown to the wolves his rookie year in Chicago. This last season was good for him to sit and watch and learn behind Josh Allen in Buffalo. I wouldn't be surprised if he turned out to be the steal of free agency.

Uh. Yeah. What is Mitch does all that? And what if I have three Playboy bunnies stop by my house in the next 20 mins to give me a bj. What if, right?
What part of hypothetical didn't you get? Its a legit topic and a very real scenario that could happen. No, I didn't say that was a foregone conclusion of mine that he would ball it out, but a what if scenario. A simulation if you will.

if it were me the bunnies would probably be disappointed.

We could have a potential Brees/Rivers situation. Excerpt Brees just exploded even more when he was traded to New Orleans. You come into a which pill do you take. Do you keep Mitch and trade Pickett or vice versa. I hope Mitch really breaks out this season. It could be good business for the Steelers no matter what happens. BTW- with competent passing game to the middle and intermediate areas of the field- Harris and the running game will benefit no matter who the quarterback is.

A couple of the PG writers fronted this question last week. It is an interesting topic. One possibility would be to trade Trubisky after this year all the while still not knowing what Pickett can do. Another is to let Trubisky keep playing out his contract and see if he does it 2 years in a row. Then, you really have to think about signing him to a starting QB contract or letting him walk. I don't think they are dumb enough to get to that point and let him walk. If you do keep Trubisky, then, possibly trade Pickett but you won't really get much for a guy who has never started. My guess is you'd get a 3rd for him, at best. They could also just keep Pickett as the backup QB until his rookie contract is up in case Trubisky gets hurt and then just let him walk.

Having an agenda about who starts is a recipe for disaster. Trubisky is on a proven it contract. If he proves it well enough you could use the leverage of the two year deal to sign a four and trade KP down the road. Maybe after next season. Players play.

I am in the boat of Trubisky being the starter as well. He definitly could sky-rocket.

What gaurantee do we have Pickett will skrocket, ?

If Mitch is hot you ride him as far as possible. Pickett waits in the wings and time has a way of helping the decision along.

While I think our offensive success/failure will revolve around personnel use and play-calling, THIS would be a good problem to have. If Mitchell flourishes, we keep KP and it costs us $15 million/>$4mil pre year for 4 yrs. (about avg for a good backup QB. If KP isn't forced into playing and we extend Mitchell to 4 yrs, KP still won't have to cost us much more than a $5 million "prove-it" contract before we have to pay him starting $$ in year 5 PROVIDED someone else doesn't want to trade us a high draft pick in year 4 for KP.

If we start using the FB and TE more as well as having a less predictable running plan, it could happen?

He signed a 3 year deal so if he plays lights out this year, start him again next year and see if he can do it again. If he does, work on a contract extension before the 2024 season.

Anyone who entertains the idea of trading Trubisky after a great year and blindly turning the reins over to Picket is seriously overestimating the NFL draft.

You roll with Mitch and Pickett can sit at #2 until it's his time. Unless someone gives you a ridiculous offer

I think if he does as steelhurt suggests the Steelers should trade him for 3 first rounders and nothing less

Are there any message parlors in PITTSBURGH ?

Trubisky signed a 2-year deal, not 3 years.

It is one of the many possibilities though especially since the Steelers even had plans to trade up and get Pickett all with Trubisky on the team so who knows. Of course, Colbert isn't the GM now.

They'll have the whole season plus next preseason to see Pickett too, if the kid stands out in practice/garbage minutes/preseason they can trade Mitch for a premium, if there's not such offer then keep both

Then that moves things up a year and Steelers will have to take a chance that his great year wasn’t a fluke. I still think they would have to use their leverage and work on extending his contract and then worry about what to do with both Trubisky and Pickett when they have to decide if they pick up Picketts option year.

Hopefully T-biscuit ball outs and makes the scenario unfold. The good thing is that KP is on a late first round contract which puts his salary on par for a solid backup. Having a backup with potential high upside taboot. These are not bad problems to have.

What worries me is what if we haven’t done enough for the OL and if Canada remains the same ole Canada…then the scenario of a balling out Mitch is unlikely to unfold and even the great KP won’t be able to do a thing to fix that either.

Can’t wait for some football, that’s for sure
