If they ever make a “hall of pretty good”, Alex Smith can join Theismann there one day....
Smith is 34. He has a broken tibia and fibula. The Fiblia is the back bone near the calf. The Tibia the front weight bearing bone in front below the knee. Losing both on the same leg is crippling.
Surgery techniques today are much better than they were for Thiemann, however abig part of Smith’s game was running. Those days appear to be gone for him.
I think he could come back as a veteran back up, if he wants to.
Hate to see a career end this way.
Smith's cap number for 2019 is $20,400,000 However if Washington cuts him they suffer $36,000,000 in dead money and a cap hit of $16,200,000
How does an injury settlement work with the salary cap?
If it's a clean break, it is less rehab than a knee injury. Like 6 months less.
There is no settlement for injuries. You signed a contract. The Redskins can release him, and the prorated signing bonus is dead money.
Holy crap, they fully guaranteed $55M. His salary next year is fully guaranteed. Wow... That means next year, if they dump him, they have to account for $36.6M in dead money. Couldn't happen to a better franchise!
Cope, the CBA does guarantee a player money for any football related injury for the duration of the injury and rehab... but unless this is a two year plus injury it shouldn’t matter in this case... lol who guarantees Alex Smith that much money? Idiots.... thats who...
It'll be interesting to see what advances in sports medicine have occurred over the past 33 years.
Alex Smith suffered a compound fracture - meaning the bone broke through his skin, per source. Trauma surgeons discovered Smith suffered a spiral fracture in his leg - defined as a long bone broken by a rotational force. Smith, 34, faces a lengthy rehab process to try to return. ~ Adam Schefter

Looking really bad now
Updates say he has had half a dozen additional surgeries to cut out damaged flesh from infections, the plate they put in to hold bones in place got infected too
Nasty stuff
Yup, it's why we're still paying Shazier.
No, if you’ll recall, the Steelers are paying Shazier a lot more than the were obligated to pay him, so I’d say it is not why they are still paying him.
