I’m reading that Andy Weidl the Asst. GM of the Steelers could be on his way too become GM of an NFL organization.
I don’t like it one bit!
I would keep Andy, promote him to GM and tell the Accountant Kahn if he wishes to remain then it’s in the capacity of managing the cap or move on.
Andy is a true football man learning his craft under Ozzie Newsom and also helping to construct the Eagles rosters. Big mistake to allow him to walk.
Kahn imo has been ok as a GM and I want and this organization needs much better than ok.
What say you?

Kahn hasn’t been a good GM. We rightly criticize Tomlin but Kahn escapes his part of the blame.

Kahn has failed to build a competent WR room, when Pickens and now DK are out the entire offense grinds to a halt, unacceptable

His drafts have been poor

If we’re serious about winning (which Rooney isn’t and this will never happen) Kahn and Tomlin are gone and Weidl is made GM and he leads the HC search

Poor? I think they have been a huge improvement over the last years of the previous regime. It hasn't been perfect, but his hit rate has been far higher. WR aside we have done well. If Weidel leaves it will be important to find someone else to replace him with similar skills.

Andy Weidl is a far better option than Omar Kahn. It’s an easy choice and should be based on the most qualified.
Andy has been involved in player personnel for years now learning under Ozzie Newsome as opposed to Omar Kahn whose strength and expertise is more on the financial side of things.
Easy choice for me!

I agree. Would be a major fail if they let Andy get away.

Not sure about the poor draft comment.

2023
1.14 Broderick Jones - Disappointing, but not a bust.
2.32 Joey Porter Jr. - He's had the best year of his career and is a legit starter.
2.49 Keeanu Benton - Steelers miscast him as a run-stopping NT. He's played better in recent weeks and is at least an average starter.
3.93 Darnell Washington - Developed into the Steelers TE1.
4.132 Nick Herbig - Currently the most explosive pass rusher on the roster. Starter capable.
7.241 Cory Trice - Injuries limited his impact.
7.251 Spencer Anderson - Found a role as a top backup and key roler player reporting eligible.

Four starters, one very important rotational pass rusher, role player on offense. JPJ and Herbig are impact players, Washington is ascending, Benton is a solid starter. Jones was disappointing, but that was a risk we knew going in. Overall, this was a good draft.

2024
1.20 Troy Fautanu - Having a very good season, highly regarded among OL experts.
2.51 Zach Frazier - At worst a top-10 center in the league.
3.84 Roman Wilson - So far a bust.
3.98 Payton Wilson - Not the best coverage LB in the world, but play has improved as a rotational LB.
4.119 Mason McCormick - Above average starter at guard.
6.178 Logan Lee - Depth player with limited play.
6.195 Ryan Watts - No longer on the roster.

Homerun for the offensive line. Fautanu, Frazier, and McCormick are all foundational pieces on the offensive line. Wilson is a solid contributor. Good draft.

2025
1.21 Derrick Harmon - Very good run defender, pass rush a work in progress.
3.83 Kaleb Johnson - Unknown.
4.123 Jack Sawyer - Rotational depth piece at edge.
5.164 Yahya Black - Rotational depth along the DL
6.185 Will Howard - Future franchise QB, obviously.
7.226 Carson Bruener - Good special teams contributor.
7.229 Donte Kent - Injured

Harmon is going to be the only impact player from this draft. The rest are depth pieces. This draft is blah.

Don't sleep on Yahya being an impact starter next year. Sawyer will be an important piece as well particularly in run defense but also as a pass defender as he hones his craft this offseason. Sawyer will never be TJ but he has the want to to be better than his physical gifts would deem.

Payton Wilson will continue to improve. Of all the positions on defense it seems like ILB takes the longest to truly learn the nuances of the position at this level. As he learns the nuances of playing the position he will become one of the best IMHO.

I think the jury isn’t in for Black, Sawyer, Howard and to a certain degree Bruener and Johnson.

For me just way too early to stamp this draft class.

This roster is hot garbage, he’s been GM for 3 years. Offensive skill positions are a joke. The good players on defense are old.

Care to defend Khan resigning Watt long term as the highest paid defensive player in league when he is in clear decline? Just because he has beef with Garrett??? A 31 year old linebackers pride and the decsions of the BROWNS determines the organizational direction now?? A bunch of young unheralded backups are playing every bit as good as Watt this year

Care to defend the WR room?

Care to defend burying Friermuth after resigning him to a substantial extension?

This organization is completely irrelevant in the post season.

Huge improvement? Please.

The 2000’s teams, built thru the draft and developed in house would beat Khans pathetic band of free agent hasbeens and drafted never will be’s by 20 or more points

Does it ever get old defending the pathetic mediocrity of this organization?

I will absolutely defend the Watt signing. It will be a steal in a year or two. I don’t buy the decline argument. The WR room is an issue but purist from lack of trying. I completed and utterly disagree with you on this discussion. It is a huge improvement everywhere except WR and line was ignored for far too long. You have to take some lumps at skill positions to fix the line first. We are just about there. You have to do that before you replace your QB or you end up like the Bungles or Jets. It may not be sexy but it is the right way to do it. Flashy toys will come later.

1. I could see both sides with Watt. Remember, this team now operates as a mom and pop shop and believes finishing .500 or better is good enough. I wouldn't say Watt signing was exclusively a Khan decision. He held strong and basically gave Heyward nothing after his holdout this summer.

2. The WR room is a disaster. He deserves criticism for this. However, all I heard all offseason was Arthur Smith doesn't need good wide receivers and a guy like Jonnu Smith could play the role of WR2. To some extent, I do believe they got the personnel they wanted on offense.

3. How is Freiermuth be relegated to TE3 on Khan? 100% a coaching decision.

Huge improvement in the draft? Absolutely. Look at Colbert's last 5 or so drafts.

I have enjoyed the combination of Weidl/Kahn. They are very good team. Kahn is probably the best at manipulating the cap and the numbers. Andy’s scouting and selecting of players is superb. I don’t fault anyone for taking a better paying position or a position that they feel is better for them. Losing Weidl would be huge, but if it happens, it happens

You’re delusional, in a year or two Watt will be 33, you think he hasn’t already lost a step? What’s that going to look like in 2 years? This is the 2nd straight season he’s been seriously diminished or out of the lineup late in the year. The difference this year is he wasn’t even close to being good enough to deserve that contract the ENTIRE season! You think this will improve into his 30s???

Is running back better? Is tight end better? Is corner better? The front 7 still stinks at stopping the run the vast majority of this season. The offensive line can’t consistently run the ball-see the Browns game

Let’s not forget that if Rodgers changes his mind and doesn’t bail Khan out signing in JUNE this team has 6 wins or less with one the worst QB rooms in the league. What’s the plan for QB next year?? This QB class looks weak now…another Khan blunder

The core of this defense is OLD in 1-3 years it will need a compete rebuild…this year they’re in the bottom 1/3 in the league in every category that matters and they’re the highest paid defense in the league. Who built that??? There are only two people to blame…Tomlin or Khan…you’re incapable of blaiming either of them….

Just about there?? 😂😂😅

Just about where-1 first round playoff win? This used to be an elite franchise, if you don’t see the decline you’re absolutely delusional, take off your rose colored glasses….this team is mediocre at best….or is that good enough for you…..You’ve spent the last 2 years praising Tomlin for getting a lot out of flawed rosters…which one is it? Has Tomlin failed or Khan? You half to at least indict one of them…

If he’s just a yes man to the owner and the coaching staff he’s part of the problem. Rooney has never been considered to be a meddler for better or worse…

What would be wrong with saying I’m the GM…you’ve got Friermuth and Washington…USE THEM…you don’t need Jonu Smith….

What's it matter so long as MT is HC? Some genius GM could score another class of 1974 pedigree, and MT still couldn't develop the talent or he'd play guys in positions they have no business being in.

It’s hard to get a full evaluation of Khan without knowing exactly how much input Tomlin has on the draft and putting players on the field. This team has some talent, they just need a coach that can put them on the field and get the most out of them.

True but his record is record, and youre accountable for that…unless you work for Art Rooney II apparently

We need a rebuilt. The Watt signing I would have passed on. And when I say rebuild I mean roster and coaching staff. You could argue our D played better without Watt this year. You are a stat guy. What do the stats say?

Have a look at who they played without Watt - Miami, Cleveland (both not exactly offensive juggernauts) and Detroit.

I like all of us appreciate what TJ has meant to the Steeler defense but he’s in decline and the contract extension was not the correct move.
He’s got three years left at 41 million per season which takes him to age 34.
He relies on speed and a quick burst and he’s only going to get slower.
Would have better to have not signed him and let him play on an expiring contract. That way they could have just moved on from him after the season.
Had he played lights out they could have franchised him in 2026.
Now we’re stuck with a big contract for a declining player. Not smart business!
