Andy Weidl could be leaving. Big mistake!

I’m reading that Andy Weidl the Asst. GM of the Steelers could be on his way too become GM of an NFL organization.
I don’t like it one bit!
I would keep Andy, promote him to GM and tell the Accountant Kahn if he wishes to remain then it’s in the capacity of managing the cap or move on.
Andy is a true football man learning his craft under Ozzie Newsom and also helping to construct the Eagles rosters. Big mistake to allow him to walk.
Kahn imo has been ok as a GM and I want and this organization needs much better than ok.
What say you?
Are you going to cough up the coin to keep him???

Poor? I think they have been a huge improvement over the last years of the previous regime. It hasn't been perfect, but his hit rate has been far higher. WR aside we have done well. If Weidel leaves it will be important to find someone else to replace him with similar skills.
I see both sides.

Khan isn't horrible but has missed the most obvious gaps in the roster.

I'm drinking Dark n Stormy's so suck it haters...

What I’m saying is Rooney needs to keep Andy as GM. He’s the much better qualified for that job and not Omar.
Trust me, I wish I was fortunate enough to be the majority owner.
Omar Kahn is a financial guy and better served the organization as the Capologist not the GM.

Yep.....thanks Slash.

I like all of us appreciate what TJ has meant to the Steeler defense but he’s in decline and the contract extension was not the correct move.
He’s got three years left at 41 million per season which takes him to age 34.
He relies on speed and a quick burst and he’s only going to get slower.
Would have better to have not signed him and let him play on an expiring contract. That way they could have just moved on from him after the season.
Had he played lights out they could have franchised him in 2026.
Now we’re stuck with a big contract for a declining player. Not smart business!
I would have simply franchised him ..................use the options available to you as an organization to your benefit.

Have a look at who they played without Watt - Miami, Cleveland (both not exactly offensive juggernauts) and Detroit.
Stats are stats......read them as you please. Don't hate on the statisticion though.

Coaching staff is forced to scheme things up when starters are out rather than just "out talent" the other team.
Are you talking about actual coaching?

Last night I was scrolling YouTube and found the 2008 playoff game vs the Chargers. I don’t think anyone would call that a great team, but the way the defense hit, the offensive attack, it was like watching a different sport….

Then you look at that roster: Ben, Parker, Ward, Washington, Holmes, Heath, Big Snack, Polumalu, Foote, Kiesel, Harrison, Swaggin’ Ike Taylor …all drafted by Pittsburgh….now who are drafted stars??? Watt and?????

This team has declined, massively; it’s sad, only a total reset from the top down (Tomlin and Khan) will give it a chance to get back on the right track

What I'm hearing from this thread is Weidl will be GM for Miami. Aikman will sprinkle holy water. Tomlin will make all draft picks for Steelers. Kahn is the contract man. No 9 wins next year.

Kahn hasn’t been a good GM. We rightly criticize Tomlin but Kahn escapes his part of the blame.

Kahn has failed to build a competent WR room, when Pickens and now DK are out the entire offense grinds to a halt, unacceptable

His drafts have been poor

If we’re serious about winning (which Rooney isn’t and this will never happen) Kahn and Tomlin are gone and Weidl is made GM and he leads the HC search
Tomlin has been in his current position more than 6 times the amount of time Khan has been in his current position. While I don’t absolve Khan 100%, don’t be fooled in thinking Khan has more stroke than Tomlin in the building. He absolutely should, but that’s not how Rooney rolls.
For whatever magical reason, the ENTIRE organization bows at Tomlin’s feet.

And Weidel 100% is a football guy, and that’s why he’s bailing. He sees the clown show Tomlin is running with Art II’s blessing and wants no part of it. I wouldn’t be shocked if Tomlin is overriding him and Khan in the war room with his idiotic thoughts and picks.

Most of those were not stars until several years after they were drafted (hell, quite a few of them weren't even starters until year 3+). And how many years did it take to put that roster together? Close to 6 years - Ward drafted 1998, Ben 2004. Khan has only been general manager three years, so a bit early to be comparing the players drafted/UDFAs and roster built under his watch with those guys.

PS who is the Washington you are referring to as a star? Nate? He only started 7 games for Pittsburgh in 4 years.

This roster is hot garbage, he’s been GM for 3 years. Offensive skill positions are a joke. The good players on defense are old.

Care to defend Khan resigning Watt long term as the highest paid defensive player in league when he is in clear decline? Just because he has beef with Garrett??? A 31 year old linebackers pride and the decsions of the BROWNS determines the organizational direction now?? A bunch of young unheralded backups are playing every bit as good as Watt this year

Care to defend the WR room?

Care to defend burying Friermuth after resigning him to a substantial extension?

This organization is completely irrelevant in the post season.

Huge improvement? Please.

The 2000’s teams, built thru the draft and developed in house would beat Khans pathetic band of free agent hasbeens and drafted never will be’s by 20 or more points

Does it ever get old defending the pathetic mediocrity of this organization?
Khan doesn’t get to dictate to Tomlin who plays on Sunday and how much they play.

Yup, Nate Washington. He was better than anyone we roll out tomorrow night at WR…

That 2008 defense was one of the best defenses of our era.
U r not wrong about the rest of ur writings

Khan's drafts so far have been a big plus over what we were getting before. I've suspected that Tomlin has not been allowed to select the first pick the past three seasons once Kahn came on board based on how poor Tomlin's previous ten plus years have been besides TJ.

There is only so much money to go around. I'm not laying the WR room completely on Khan. Most of the team's salary cap is used up on Tomlin's defense. It's too bad that some going off on here are not in charge since I'm sure they would find a way to bring on those pro bowl WRs to fill out the room for cheap. As long as Tomlin is in charge, the defense is where the money will mostly go. Which makes it even more frustrating when his defense is not producing.

I love TJ, but I was on the side of not wanting him to get paid by the Steelers this summer. He already has a history of missing games due to injury and was already not blowing teams up last season. He's been almost non existent some games this season. I realize he's getting double teamed and held most plays, but that's been going on most of his career. The difference is he was still able to get through that before. It's not happening now and Tomlin can't seem to figure out how to move him around to get him more involved more often. It's only anecdotal on my part, but it seems like the defense played better the last two weeks when he's been out.

Khan also is not down on the field during games and at practice developing players. One of my biggest gripes about Tomlin is his lack of ability to regularly develop players or coaches on his staff. He has to resort to bringing in older vets because he and his hand picked staff struggle to develop young talent. He also seems to have a confidence issue because his coaching staff are just a bunch of yes men. If a coach's success can be partially determined based on his coaching tree of assistants that have gone on to better things, he's not looking good there. I don't count Flores because he was only here the one year and Tomlin did him a favor to bring him on. Too bad he wasn't made the DC, but I'm sure he would have clashed with Tomlin calling the plays.

Ok how about the rest?? Resigning Watt…the WR room…pinning the whole season on Rodgers signing in June…
You’re not wrong on any of that.
But being Tomlin has been HC for 19 years, and Khan GM for 3, I think Tomlin is the taller hog at the trough at this juncture in their respective careers.
I’m not absolving Khan 100%, I just think Tomlin has more current influence.

Do you honestly believe Khan was the primary driver of the decisions to resign Watt and how much to set the market at?

I’d wager he was a minority shareholder in that decision making process.

I would have simply franchised him ..................use the options available to you as an organization to your benefit.

Yup
They also could explore options like negotiating in season to achieve better deals and cap management

This team is stuck decades in the past and the product shows it

Kahn was an intern who eventually grew into a cap guru, he was never an X's and O's guy, which is why Weidl acts as his training wheels. Folly to suggest he's picking Mike Tomlin's players for him.

How many times does Rodgers have to say Tomlin is the reason he's a Steeler? He can't just go acquire WRs if Tomlin and Smith don't want them.

Exactly!
As I mentioned he was on his last year. Let him play that out. If he balls out and has a great season, slap the franchise tag on him for 2026.
