Any Chance Shazier Moves Outside in 2015?

I would think the more likely scenario is Williams moving outside. Closer to the right body type.

He lacks pass rushing skills, def not a fit outside. This team stinks when we get no pass rush from OLB.

offer Worlids a deal in the same area as Kruger.

Kruger got $40m over 5 years with $13m guaranteed.

On the market last year, I think Worilds would have gotten a better deal (notwithstanding whether any of us think he was worth it). I don't think he would have signed the deal del proposed last year. The guaranteed money in the first two years might have gotten it done it, though.

This year, I don't think that is the case, even with the salary cap higher than when Kruger signed.

With him already having been paid $9.75m and his performance this year, I don't even offer a deal as good as del's suggestion. Maybe the same years and total, but not nearly as much guaranteed. I'd really rather pay less than $7m/year. $6m/year with some pricey incentives would be OK, but I doubt he would sign it and someone else, I think, would offer him better.

Drafting one if available would not likely get much over Worilds production his rookie year. That being said it may not get you much less and it would be lots cheaper and better in the long run. I would still like to get Suh in the off season and go to a 4 -3. Heyward, Suh, McCullers Tuitt, McClendon is rotational and can likely play any of the 4 spots, we can add a depth player from practise squad or the draft or someone still on the roster. With the linebackers we have we could play the run better and still rush 5 on occasion. That line would likely create a mismatch issue for most teams needing at least six to block four.

It is not a likely scenario but adding one big piece could fix lots of issues.

I would prefer to let Worilds walk and find another FA to sign. He had me fooled last year, but he is not going to get better.

Save the high draft picks for the secondary.

Shazier has too much speed to not have him inside and able to move around to cover TE's and RB's. No way I would move him outside. I'd look at Williams or Spence if you were going to try to move anyone outside.

I can't help but wonder if we will pull another Max Starks move on Worilds.......Depth wise the situations are very similar........

Nothing against Worilds but he's not an 8 mil/yr player (certainly not 10/yr). If we stay w the 3-4 we have to get better on the edges to develop a pass rush and we certainly cannot afford to get worse.

With as many needs in our defensive backfield, we cannot afford to "attempt" to fix everything at once. If we fix the DL, our CBs will look better, if we fix our CBs and Safeties, our DL will look better. (coverage sacks vs pressure induced turnovers).

This being said, I REALLY wanted to take a shot on Justin Houston but I think he is playing himself into an all-league contract now. I'm not saying to let Worilds walk but I would try to look at guys like Brandon Graham (almost identical to Woodley) or Derrick Morgan BEFORE I make an offer to Worilds. They both have similar production on far less opportunities as rushers. Graham will draw a higher contract IMO but it won't be over 5/40. Another guy I look at is Trent Cole. He is presently under contract but his base "doubles" next season to 10mil/yr. At 32, he will be cut or restructured for sure.

We could take a flyer on Orakpo who would have made some money this year but his production fell off considerably. He may have to sign a "show me" contract this off-season. He is an injury risk but may be worth a shot.

Other guys I would try to bring in who might 'turn-out' better than this years draft prospects are Dezman Moses (who looked good in GB before injuries) and Phillip Hunt (who has a credible resume but has been injured thus far and should be back in playing shape by the off-season.

The way I see it is IF we spring for a big FA like Houston, we can draft our 'future fixes' for the defensive backfield. If we don't, we won't get much improvement next year regardless of who we draft, IMO. Too many holes to fill.

I like Willie Gay and he will be a must sign for us. Antwon Blake will be ready to work out of the left-side with he and Cortez switching back and forth from slot/LCB. Willie only plays well on the RCB side for whatever reason. IF Troy retires, we can get back to playing our safeties deeper and start making an impact in the passing game. Right now, we have been protecting the run game with both with one safety playing within 3 yards and the other at 10. This is NOT a Steeler 3-4 defense.

I would counter with 6 36 mill 9 mill guaranteed, if he wants more let him walk, and cut Troy and Brett and offer top dollar then for Houston

It was assumed that Chad Brown was too small to be a force as a pass rusher, and he ripped the league a new ******* playing on the edge in 1996.

People like to bring up the failure of converting Kendrell Bell to the outside, but I believe his ankle or Achilles (whatever the **** it was) that derailed his should-have -been great career, prevented him from being a force on the edge. That guy was just too strong, too explosive, just too bad *** to not be a great pass rusher short of injury.

I see a lot of Brown and Bell in Shazier. Assuming he can stay healthy, which unfortunately is a quetion right now, I'd like to see him get a chance on the outside, especially because Jarvis seems to be such a bum and and they seem to have capable players on the inside in Spence and Willaims.

It's about power. Shazier doesn't have half the power the Bell had. Bell could blow up an OL. Also Brown was 6'2 245 lbs. Shazier doesn't have the power of those two plus he is 6'1 and had to gain weight to get to 235. I don't remember Brown being said to be too small but even if that is true how is 6'2 245 lbs almost 20 years ago small compared to 6'1 235 lbs today?

I think Shazier should stay at ILB.

I think Houston will get tagged before he's allowed to test the market. He's too talented to leave a team.

Brandon Graham is an excellent character guy. I had the pleasure of meeting him and his mother his rookie year. Loves the game, works hard, and appreciates what he has. Priest Holmes was this way as well. Very rare to find that type of humility in a league of alpha males.
