I don't consider "Total Yards" to indicated the #1 offense. And we were 2nd in that category anyhow behind New Orleans (not in playoffs).
Not sure I would consider us #1 in anything. It was certainly an improvement. The best offensive output by the offense ever and one of the best when compared to the league as a whole (along with 1979).
I don't really know what to expect. I think we should easily be top-10 in scoring production and a good season (overachieving) should be top-5. That would be good.
But the schedule I think will be tougher, so we might have a drop off. And I think we are precariously thin at a lot of offensive positions (#1 TE to #2 TE, #1 WR to #2 WR, #1 RB to #2 RB, Guard/Center/Guard to backup interior guy).
It's a nice foundation to continue to bolster and build up. The key now is to not make the offense better, but to make it more resilient. Improve depth. Keep the feeding talent coming. Coach up and teach the younger kids showing promise. Draft guys thinking "can I make them a good starter in 2 years" rather than throwing away picks on bells and whistles or fat, slow lineman.
Being #1 is not the goal. Being more consistent is the goal. I can live with being 5th or 6th in points per possession. I can live with top-3 in TOP again. I can't live with up-down-up-down like we showed this year. I can't live with continued struggles in the red zone.
Every offensive roster decision should be about consistency, depth, development and red zone improvement. NOT about trying to be the #1 offense in the league.
