Bears deal top pick

Yes, if that 2024 first round pick ends up being a top 5 the bears won the trade. That is the risk of trading away future first round picks. The value charts say the last pick of the round because you don't know what it actually will be. Look at the Claypook pick. The Bears were a middle of the round pick at that point. Now it is the first overall second round pick. We definitely won that trade. And here is my thoughts. The bears are giving Fields at least one more year to prove himself so Stroud, Young, Levis, Richardson aren't in play. Jalen Carter was probably the top guy on their board and he just dropped himself presumably out of the top 10. If they do their homework and really figure out what might happen with Carter legal situation they probably still can get him at #9 now. Between DJ Moore, Mooney, and Claypool are set now at WR. If Fields doesn't look to be the guy they will have 2 shots at the #1 overall pick in 2024 with theirs and Carolina's first round pick. And if neither of them are the first overall pick, they still will have the ammo to trade into the #1 overall pick with having two likely top 10 picks and could snag Drake Maye who would easily be the best QB in this draft if he was eligible.
Right. I’d never trade a future 1st round pick. You never know when disaster might strike your season or how many close losses you’ll have. (8 of the Bears losses were by one score.) Imagine if instead of trading Claypool to the Bears for a future 2nd, the Steelers had traded DJ for a future 1st.

Man, if that trade was on the table and Khan didn't bite, I bet he'd kick himself in the arse.

I really doubt it, part of the Claypool value was the rookie contract. DJ's contract would make him lower his worth to a 2nd round pick

Claypool is only under contract through 2023 though and at about 3m for the season. DJ is for 2023 & 2024 at 8m and 7m respectively. The bears also had like 95 million in cap space before adding on DJ Moore's 20 million dollar salary. So I don't think that Johnson's contract would have scared them off in the least. But I also don't think Johnson was on the block either.

I thought the roster bonuses go to the new team, just like it happened with WJ3. So it would really be 8M +2,5M in 2023 and 7M + 3M in 2024.
But you are right that it probably wasn't a factor. Still I doubt anyone picking top 10 would give that 1st for him.

Yeah, they would. But even so 2 years of Diontae Johnson is about 1 year of DJ Moore. If the Bears were cash strapped I could definitely see the contract being a big reason for the trade. I mean that is surely why the Packers were interested because they were trying to win now and didn't have the cap space for a guy on his second contract. Claypool fit the bill. And likely pushed up his trade value so thank you Green Bay. :)

Carolina might have overpaid being that they will be a 7-9 team ostensibly trying to groom a rookie QB. That scenario could very well result in them sending the Bears a top 5 or 10 pick next year.
Panthers will win the division

Bears should of waited this thing out...That deal looks light to me...

They have the pick of the cream of the crop of any player they want, Carolina done good
Tge problem was that more and more vet QBs are about to hit tge trade market
Rumor is it’s Stroud they’re targeting. Watch they use the pick on Richardson - a player who might have been there at 9.

I’m betting Richardson despite Stroud being the logical pick…the way they suddenly went after that pick once the combine was done makes me think they felt that their guy wasn’t going to be available where they were at anymore…
Stroud locked himself into a top five pick with his showing, but he was projected there even before his workout…if it was him, they would have been offering earlier

Young pushed his stuff to the pro day… so if it was him nothing changed.

Levis had an ok day… enough to ensure he was a first round qb but he isn’t top of the draft material

Richardson wowed everyone with his athleticism… he was clearly the big climber and likely into the top 3.

The bears also were probably ok moving down there too because as qbs rose in value, the defensive guys they were probably targeting were falling back

The Bears were 3-5 with several close losses when they traded for Claypool so they didn’t know they would be drafting top 10. I was posing the hypothetical as if the Bears were thinking the acquisition of DJ would transform their pass offense and turn the season around and therefore willing to trade their future 1st.

Richardson stock was seriously rising even before the combine. My son sent me a text with a link to a betting website that showed that his odds to be the #1 overall pick opened at +10,000 and were at +750. I just checked and Caesar’s now has him at +350.

Maybe he will be worth it, but pure athletic metrics don’t always translate to the nfl… i get that Stroud and Young aren’t perfect prospects, but you’d think they would be 1&2 in some order…

Love this move by Carolina. They will be taking their FRANCHISE QB, GUARANTEED

Not sure how you say that when nobody even knows who the best of the four is, and a lot doubt any of the four is close to "guaranteed." Young, Stroud, Levis and Richardson are not viewed anywhere close to the way Elway, P. Manning, E. Manning, Bradshaw, or Burrow were viewed. Not close.

I am fairly confident that one of the top 4 would have been available at 9. Obviously Carolina believes that they know who "the guy" is, but then again so did the Raiders with Jamarcus Russell, and the Browns with Tim Couch, and the Buccaneers with Vinny Testaverde, and the Panthers not so long ago with Cam Newton.

This, plus the “ClayPUFF” attitude and lack of maturity fueled us moving him (clayPUFF).

Salute the nation

The funny thing about this trade is it only makes sense for Carolina if there is 1 sure thing QB in this draft and it only makes sense for the Bears if there is not a sure thing QB.

Lamar and Kyler Murray could factor into things. Arizona may want to move on from Murray who seems to not care as much about football as playing video games. Some team may be desperate enough to go for Lamar
