Ben Roethlisberger: Don't plan on Mason Rudolph replacing me for a while

Rudolph Big Ben's replacement? (0:52)

Jeremy Fowler
ESPN Staff Writer
PITTSBURGH -- Ben Roethlisberger might be quarterbacking the Steelers at age 40.

Roethlisberger told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he plans to play three to five more years if he stays healthy and his offensive line is intact.

The Steelers selected Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph with the 76th overall pick in last week's NFL draft, raising questions about whether the franchise had found an heir apparent to Big Ben.

"If he's going to be their guy, that's great; but in my perfect world, it's not going to be for a while," Roethlisberger told the newspaper.

"I'll still take it one year at a time and give it everything I have that one year," Ben Roethlisberger told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Charles LeClaire/USA TODAY Sports
Roethlisberger, who turned 36 in March, flirted with retirement after the 2016 season but started to entertain the prospect of future years last season. He publicly committed to 2018 minutes after a playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Center Maurkice Pouncey, his best friend on the team, told ESPN that Roethlisberger had informed him that he wanted to play three more seasons.

Roethlisberger has two years left on his contract, and team president Art Rooney II said this offseason that the team is prepared to discuss a contract extension with the quarterback.

"I went and talked to Art and Coach [Mike Tomlin] and coach Randy [Fichtner] and basically said, listen, I can't control -- barring major injuries, barring things at home, and things out of your control -- the way my body feels," Roethlisberger told the Post-Gazette. "The way our O-line is put together, as good as they are, they kept me healthy as can be the last couple of years. I really feel I can play this game another three to five years."

Roethlisberger validated that notion with his play late last season. After a slow start to the season's first half, Roethlisberger averaged nearly 350 passing yards and three touchdowns per game over the final seven outings. His entire starting offensive line is under contract, as are weapons Antonio Brown, Le'Veon Bell and JuJu Smith-Schuster.

"I'll still take it one year at a time and give it everything I have that one year, but that's what I feel comfortable telling [the Steelers]," Roethlisberger said about his time frame.

Rudolph doesn't need to be the next Ben Roethlisberger, he just needs to be the next Charlie Batch, which is still vastly better than being the next Landry Jones.

Veteran leadership, both Ben Rothlesberger and Ron Burgundy. This,......Ben's not worried but Landry sure as hella better be.

This is what I don't get about the Pittsburgh media, especially those two teenage girls on the Fan Chris Mueller and Joe Starkey, they spun this yesterday like Ben just now started saying this because they drafted Rudolph.
No, Ben said immediately after the Jags game that he said he'd like to play at least 3 more seasons. Then he also has spoken with the Rooney's and Colbert about his intentions.
I never understand why the Pittsburgh media tries to stir **** up when it comes to Ben

Artificial drama for ratings. The dumbasses are still talking about the Fleury/Murray debate. Anything for more callers.

Yep, individuals vying for attention with look at me, and what I think I know. News has gone from being factual to it's all about the messenger.

Ben Roethlisberger: Don't plan on Mason Rudolph replacing me for a while

My headline:

Ben Roethlisberger: I'm delighted my potential replacement was drafted and I look forward to holding the clipboard

What the hell did they expect him to say???

This is just a competitor showing his competitiveness about his spot. At the end of the day when Ben does retire, be it next off season, the year after or whenever, we have Rudolph on the roster and ready to go. This was necessary and its not us trying to push Ben out the door

**** to the yeah.....The Alpha Male arising. Though no one here sees it as competition, obviously Ben is using this as motivation to squash any hopes “The Mase” has. I love to squash potential replacements for me at my job (I do high level sales)

This is a great sign. Look for Ben to come into camp in great shape and push the envelope. Just exactly what a QB needs at this stage of his career

If Ben plays 4 to 5 years, this becomes a wasted pick just like Dobbs as the PG pundits are all saying he will be the one to go and not Jones. Rudolph will move on looking for a starting opportunity.

What do you do with Ben’s contract? Do you extend him?

Personally I would have him play out his two years then tag him for a 3rd year. That gives us Ben until 39. If his play hasn’t fallen off and Rudolph doesn’t look like the heir apparent then I consider a Brees type two year deal which would give me Ben until 41. But if Rudolph looks like the real deal I would let Ben walk after year 3 (franchise tag) and sign Rudolph to a Tyrod Taylor type deal. Big money but not big guaranteed money.

I love Ben but there comes a time you gotta move on. If he makes it 3 more years after the pounding he took early in his career I would say he did much better than I expected. Honestly, at 26 I didn’t think he’d make it past 36.

If he averages what he did the last three years that puts him over 63k yards and 5th all time, 6th (maybe 5th) passing tds, and 4th in wins above John Elway. Those are solid hall of fame numbers. And he’s not leap frogging Brees or Brady and he’d have to play probably 5 lights out years or six average for him years to jump Manning or Favre. I think that’s not in the cards for him.

I think it was pretty much the time that haley left is when he came out and said he wanted to play a 3 more years or so.

It came out before that, days after the Jax loss, but either way it had nothing to do with Rudolph.

Perfect, one little draft pick makes Ben play 4 more years!

hahahahaha brilliant!

Ben also said point blank he'll do everything he can to help Rudolph learn the playbook, get acclimated, etc. Of course that didn't make a catchy headline.

The question is not how long Ben plans on playing. The question is do the Steelers have a plan in place to replace him in case of in-season injury? And two, do they have a competent long-term solution if and when Ben hangs em up? I believe by drafting Rudolph, the answer to both of those is yes. And it's the first time in years we can say that with any type of confidence. Great job by Colbert picking this kid when he fell into their laps.

Ben will get a 2 to 4 year extension. He'll get a nice chunk up front and then his salary in the 1st year or two will be low. That way, if his play does diminish and he needs to retire, that last year or two salary will just go away and they will only be on the hook for his signing bonus.
