Ben Roethlisberger: Don't plan on Mason Rudolph replacing me for a while

Ben Roethlisberger: ‘I’ll Do Whatever I Can To Help’ Mason Rudolph

http://www.Invalid Link - Check SN ...-ill-do-whatever-i-can-to-help-mason-rudolph/

f you were worried (or perhaps even excited) about a quarterback controversy, it doesn’t sound as though Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is interested in one—on either front.

For one thing, he spoke publicly for the first time since dabbling with retirement about his belief that he could play for multiple seasons without qualifying those statements. He even upped it to maybe five years, which would cross him well over the 40 bridge. So as long as Mason Rudolph is patient, there is no controversy brewing.

Because Roethlisberger has no intentions of making life difficult for the rookie either, at least based on his public comments. Rudolph is the third quarterback the Steelers have drafted under Roethlisberger over the course of the past five years, also previously taking Landry Jones and Joshua Dobbs in 2013 and 2017, respectively.

He had no problem working with them, and even though Rudolph is coming in with a bit of a different air to him (and a higher pedigree by virtue of draft status, a top-100 pick being the highest the team has taken a quarterback since Roethlisberger himself in 2004), he plans to treat him the same as he did the others when they came in.

About Rudolph, he recently told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that “you know he’s able to play. Anytime you get guys to come in, you can try to teach him a little bit, it’s a good thing. I’ll do whatever I can to help”. The Oklahoma State quarterback is a four-year player and three-starter coming off a highly productive career that included 13618 passing yards and 92 touchdowns. His accuracy improved each season, reaching 65 percent his senior year.

Regarding the role of helping the young quarterbacks come in and learn the game at the professional level, Roethlisberger told Ed Bouchette, “I did that with Landry and try to help Dobbs as much as I can”. He did concede that those duties are largely delegated now though. “Landry does a great job at that, he did it last year with Dobbs. It’s kind of the backup’s role”.

And that is a pretty important point worth mentioning as well. Jones is going to have virtually as important a role in nurturing Rudolph’s growth as Roethlisberger, at least assuming that he is on the roster in September. This would be one argument in favor of retaining him.

There is some sense in that, especially if you consider the fact that their quarterbacks coach is going to have a lot on his plate this year. Randy Fichtner will be serving double-duty this year in his first season as offensive coordinator, and that is not the ideal situation for a rookie quarterback to learn from.

Having a veteran backup in Jones who knows the offense as well as anybody else in the building could be a great learning aid for Rudolph. I kind of hope the Steelers don’t lose sight of this when it comes time to make the final roster decisions. I know I won’t.

If Ben plays 4 to 5 years, this becomes a wasted pick just like Dobbs as the PG pundits are all saying he will be the one to go and not Jones. Rudolph will move on looking for a starting opportunity.

A few years ago when Ben was out quite a bit, a reliable back-up may have won a bowl for us....Always been amazed at the trash behind Ben....As much as I like Vick, and I saw him in person at the SanDiego game in SD, he was washed up by the time he got to us...

Nota wasted pick. First round value at 3 and insurance if Ben walks or father time overtakes him quickly. Having no replacement makes zero sense. When I say replacement I mean no a whole lot of drop-off...A youngstud QB IS ALWAYS THE WAY TO GO. We have control of him at a the same time he is on the cheap.

GREAT FREAKIN' PICK

I think its great if it helps Ben want to play a bit longer.

Rudolph is his own man. By 2020, Ben will be retired, I think. By then we could have a new starter for dirt cheap for two years.

If this was a 7-9 type non playoff type of team with an average OL, I do not think Ben would be sticking around.

He's here for his legacy, the hall of fame, and another ring. A 3rd ring, and Ben really separates himself from the pack.

Our D currently isn't good enough to get another ring. Every player coming back from last year would have to find another gear to improve otherwise it will be more of the same. Bostic is not a great addition at ILB. He is just another guy. We might have improved at S but about it. We haven't done anything to stop the run.

With Shazier out we will be lucky if the D is statistically as good this year as it was last year. Ben better up that goal to 40 points per game.

They rid themselves of some dead weight. I think the D will perform better as the year goes on. Once they figured out how all the new parts fit.

Spike is correct. If nothing more, this dude just pushed Ben to play longer. And maybe, just maybe the kid turns out to be good. Make that a first rounder we get from the browns good or the next Steeler qb for awhile. Win win

This topic was discussed on NFL Sirius this past Sunday with a couple former GMs. Polian and Dominick (maybe Gil Brandt). This is THE ideal situation for Pitt. They opined that Ben, barring injury, has 3 years at least in his own mind to keep playing. Certainly doable, and he has been open with KC and Art2 about it. It’s a yearly assessment to him. (I personally think he wants one more championship before calling it a career).

In any case Polian and Brandt explained Rudolph would have a couple years to become the back up QB. At that point he would replace Landry when his contract expires in 2019 or even earlier. At that point on Ben’s year 3, they could extend (if warranted) Rudolph at a very affordable price with him being under contract for a couple years while being the defacto starter after Ben retires. Rudolph’s 3rd contract would be the big one, not the second, as most teams deal with at the QB position.

Ben is a Diva. That being said, it's good that a player is pushing him. It's the first time he has ever felt threatened that someone on the roster cold be his replacement, instead of his backup.

I fully expect Ben to have his best season to date, this year. He's a competitive man, and now he has competition in the QB room with him!

Ben feels zero pressure from Rudolph, he's just another QB to him

I don't think right this instant Ben feels threatened by MASON. Ben isn't dumb and realized this kid could be his replacement so he best pick it up a little. Threatened, probably not but eye opener,........... Yes.

I only wish the Steelers picked a good RB in round two, but the value just wasn't there as the best ones went before our turn in round two Bell who has not signed for the tag amount would say what?

I think Bell will end up playing for the tag this year (if he sits out he makes no money) but for sure this is his last year here.

Because with that giant vacant hole at WR after Bryants departure, we really didnt need a WR,,,,,,

We have JuJu. 50 catches for 603 yards and 3 TD's plus a season and a half of drug suspensions ain't that big a hole.

Steelers will replace Bell next year if he walks. RB is the easiest position to "plug and play" a rookie. Please do not panic about replacing Bell a year ahead of him actually leaving (if he even does end up leaving)

I agree it is drama. Amazing how a little competition can change your tune. Love Ben, and hope he plays another 5.

As long as there isn't the "drop off" in playing ability. Maybe he needs to go to the Amazon and get poison frog treatments...............

James Washington is impressive. He also brings run after the catch ability
