Ben Roethlisberger OUT vs. Lions - Reserve/COVID-19 List

He should play averagely enough to beat an 0-8 Lions squad.
Should Rudolph show that he is indeed pedestrian and lose to the Lions - i.e. the team loses and the offense is anemic - then will you acknowledge he sucks?

Or do you think he's played well enough that he's a legit backup?

Relax. Mason Rudolph has only lost once (8-1) vs. teams named after jungle cats.

2-1 vs Kansas State Wildcats
1-0 vs Southeastern Louisiana Lions
2-0 vs Pitt Panthers
1-0 vs South Alabama Jaguars
2-0 vs Cincinnati Bengals

Steelers have the right guy for the Lions game Sunday.

He and Big Play James (even though he's been pretty bad lately) also have some pretty good chemistry. I'd love nothing more than for Rudolph to give everybody the middle finger with a good game I know he's capable of having (god please let the OL protect him).

I dunno. We have been promised Mason was the heir with great potential. Home game against the Lions. Good time to trot out Rudolph. Not because we should win this game but because this is the type of game we usually should win and find a way to lose. If Rudolph can't come out and take command then we can check off the front office's "answer" to Ben nearing the end as being a failure.

That being said, either way, I hope Rudolph doesn't come to play and the coaches strap him with the +4 to -3 yard passing plays.

At first I was thinking is Jesse JAMES still playing for the Lions........................ Then like a dumbASS it hit me, thanks for my moment and laugh.

Rudolphs stats were very comparable or better than to many young qbs that went on to have good careers… he had a couple bad games coming back from a concussion… we really haven’t seen him outside of the Fitchner dink and dunk offense either….

Give the kid a legit chance… we will see where he is at Sunday

This is actually a very good thing for the future of this team. If Mason Rudolph can’t beat an 0-8 Lions team, he has no place being in the discussion of replacing Ben. Ben’s banged up and needs a week off…

So this may not be a huge bad thing. I was worried about this being one of those Tomlin trap games. The one we are sure to win only to lose to an bad team.

Without ben everyone knows we gotta play great as a team to win. and we get to see a bit more of Mason to see what he can do. and Ben gets to rest for a week.

WoW

Wishing a loss while we are in the thick of things.................................. Like him or not, I hope like hell he plays his potential.

Quite the opposite. I wish for the win. This is the perfect scenario to see if all the years we invested in Rudolph were worth it. Hence the comment at the end that I hope they let him play and not hamstring him. Perfect game to know, or start to know, the "answer." Maybe I didn't say it best, but I will NEVER be the fan that desires a loss ... not for a better draft pick, not because the game doesn't "matter" and certainly not to prove or not prove my opinions right or wrong. I hope Rudolph comes out and drops dimes. I hope the coaches don't hold him back. But I won't be blind, in any case, to what this game could speak to the Steelers' future at the position ... good or bad.

To be fair, the offense has been anemic all season long… last game was the first time they put up reasonable points…

If mason makes the reads and throws, we will learn a lot

You know this already, but I like your style, man.

Unfortunately after seeing so much Rudolf over the last 3 years, many of us are convinced that he plays below average quarterback.
Many of us are not. He has played above average considering his inexperience and not having a full season as the starter.

From one game when he has shown to be a decent QB? No.

Yes, I believe his track record speaks for itself...Rudolph is a good backup NFL quarterback. If they lose and he plays like **** tomorrow, I might have to reassess. One game where the starter is deemed ineligible the night before shouldn't define Rudolph's career. But again, I don't think he's going to lose to the Lions.

This is a good time for this to happen. Hopefully Rudolph has a good game. It’s also an opportunity to see Canada open up the play calling with Rudy at the helm vs Ben

He's already passed out, I guarantee it. I mean "put money on that ****" type of guarantee.

Also: Washington will be starting for Claypoole. Maybe it will benefit Rudolph in a big way, given their past? I know.. but its possible.

So Jack it is then...

The D usually steps up when the O stinks. I think Washington played decent last game, and we still have DJ and Muth. Mason just needs to play smart and we have a shot. I seem to recall needing defensive scores to win a couple of the games he won, but I could be wrong. I think having Ben out might provide an extra boost to get up for an 0-8 team.

Tomorrow is going to give me heartache...
Tomorrow was going to give you heart ache anyway. It's not like this offense is something really super special with Big Ben in there. Personally, I don't think the drop off will be all that precipitous. The Steelers are what they are. An average team with three below average QB's. Every game is going to be painful regardless of who starts. Just try and enjoy the game and hope for the best.

This isn't fair. It's a team game. Rudolph could set franchise single game records in all categories (not likely, I know) and still lose. Does it still mean he sucks because "he" couldn't beat the Lions?

Yes the team can blow out the lions and mason could play average or even suck.. that won’t mean he is the answer

Conversely Mason could make every read and every throw and they could lose. That won’t mean he sucks… ideally he plays well and we win
