Emails released by Wikileaks raise questions of DNC's impartiality

(CNN) Nearly 20,000 emails sent and received by Democratic National Committee staff members were released Friday by Wikileaks, with one message in particular raising questions about the committee's impartiality during the Democratic primary.

One email features DNC staffers pondering ways to undercut Sanders, an insurgent Democrat who had a bitter relationship with party leadership. Sanders supporters charged that the DNC was biased toward Clinton, and Sanders late in the primary endorsed DNC chair Debbie Wassserman Schultz's primary opponent in her Florida congressional race.

The revelation threatened to shatter the uneasy peace between the Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders camps and supporters days before the Democratic convention kicks off next week.

The leaks, from January 2015 to May 2016, feature Democratic staffers debating everything from how to deal with challenging media requests to coordinating the committee's message with other powerful interests in Washington.

Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz was so furious with Mika Brzezinski after the MSNBC “Morning Joe” co-host called on her to resign as chair of the Democratic National Committee back in May that she ordered her deputy to complain to Phil Griffin, the head of the cable network.

The fascinating exchange, which also includes irate emails from Wasserman Schultz to NBC political director Chuck Todd, were released on Friday by WikiLeaks.

In an email sent out later that day, Wasserman Schultz wrote to DNC communications director Luis Miranda, calling Brzezinski’s remarks “the LAST straw.”

“This is outrageous. She needs to apologize,” Wasserman Schultz continued while ordering Miranda to call MSNBC chief Phil Griffin.

Six minutes later, Wasserman Schultz sent an email directly to Todd, who also hosts NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“Chuck, this must stop,” reads the subject line of the email.


Leaked Emails Show DNC Officials Constructing Anti-Bernie Narrative

“Wondering if there’s a good Bernie narrative for a story, which is that Bernie never ever had his act together, that his campaign was a mess,” DNC press secretary Mark Paustenbach wrote in a May 21 email to communications director Luis Miranda. “Specifically, [DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz] had to call Bernie directly in order to get the campaign to do things because they’d either ignored or forgotten to something critical.”

“It’s not a DNC conspiracy, it’s because they never had their act together,” he insisted.

Twitter accused of suppressing DNC Wikileaks story

Twitter lit up Friday night with allegations that it tried to suppress news that secret-leaking website Wikileaks exposed thousands of emails obtained from the servers of the Democratic National Committee.

Friday afternoon, users noted, "#DNCLeaks" was trending, with more than 250,000 tweets about it on the platform. By Friday evening, it vanished completely from the site's "trending" bar for at least 20 minutes. It returned as "#DNCLeak" after users erupted, though it was too late to quell their rage.

"Don't normally tweet political things, but why would @twitter pull the #DNCleaks from trending at #1. Sounds like censorship to me," said one. "Twitter is still trying to censor this trend! Now #DNCleak is trending instead of original #DNCLeaks! Keep talking guys, expose corruption," said another.

Leaked Emails: Politico’s Ken Vogel Filed Story with DNC Before His Own Editors

A release of Democratic National Committee emails from WikiLeaks shows Politico reporter Ken Vogel sent a pre-publication negative copy of a story April 30 to the DNC’s deputy communications director, so he and other staffers at the DNC along with Hillary Clinton campaign could coordinate a response.

“Vogel gave me his story ahead of time/before it goes to his editors as long as I didn’t share it. Let me know if you see anything that’s missing and I’ll push back,” wrote Mark Paustenbach in an email to his boss, Luis Miranda, who before taking over communications for the DNC worked for President Barak Obama’s White House outreach to Latinos, as well as other campaigns, including the Democratic 2000 recount operation in Florida.

The subject line of Vogel’s email: “per agreement … any thoughts appreciated.

An email allegedly shows DNC staffers plotting to hit Sen. Bernie Sanders on his religious beliefs.

That WikiLeaks dump of Democratic National Committee emails happened as promised Friday. And one email allegedly shows DNC staffers plotting to attack Bernie Sanders' religious beliefs.

The message from May says, "He had skated on saying he has a Jewish heritage. I think I read he is an atheist. ... My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist."

Sanders isn't actually named in the email, but in May, he was the only candidate with a Jewish heritage from either party. It's also not really clear if he's even an atheist.

Bernie Sanders Campaign Chief Says Someone Must Be 'Accountable' for What DNC Emails Show

Bernie Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver said his team was "disappointed" by the emails from the Democratic National Committee leaked through WikiLeaks, which seemed to reveal staff in the party working to support Hillary Clinton.

"Someone does have to be held accountable," Weaver said during an interview with ABC News

Weaver said the emails showed misconduct at the highest level of the staff within the party and that he believed there would be more emails leaked, which would "reinforce" that the party had "its fingers on the scale."

"Everybody is disappointed that much of what we felt was happening at the DNC was in fact happening, that you had in this case a clear example of the DNC taking sides and looking to place negative information into the political process.

DNC chair won't speak at Dem convention following Wikileaks fallout

The head of the Democratic National Committee will not speak at the party's convention next week, a decision reached by party officials Saturday after emails surfaced that raised questions about the committee's impartiality during the Democratic primary.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz, whose stewardship of the DNC has been under fire through most of the presidential primary process, will not have a major speaking role in an effort "to keep the peace" in the party, a Democrat familiar with the decision said. The revelation comes following the release of nearly 20,000 emails.
