Blow it up

This team is in dire need of high draft picks. They can get to the playoffs but we know something always goes wrong. Need high picks to get over the top. Can’t build through the draft anymore in today’s nfl. League is passing the Rooney’s by.
We need high draft picks, but can't build thru the draft anymore? I'm glad people on this board have no control over this team...

This is one of the dumbest posts I've ever read. First of all you say we need high draft picks but then say you can't win by building through the draft. Which is it? Now let's look at the latter statement.....so the Rams with woods, Donald, goff, kupp, gurley and a slew of other players are draft picks are they not? The chiefs with hill hunt ( he was a key piece) mahomes kelce and a bunch of their best defenders over the years....are they not draft picks? Saints with lattimore Ingram kamara Thomas Davenport etc are also draft picks. Should I go on? You can't build through free agency because there is a cap.....you have to save dough with rookie contracts....in essence you can only win through the draft...it's the only way in fact. Dumb post

You guys realize there are 2 teams trying to win a football game, not just one?

But one of them is much more adept and adapting and adjusting, the other one is the Steelers and Mike Tomlin. Rivers and the Chargers said it perfectly after the game and Tomlin said it in his presser yesterday.

Burns was a SOLID CB in college, he has the potential, why is it that Tomlin and his staff can NEVER develop any of the players that we draft.
I think burns is classic examp,e of Tomlins short comings. Burns gets out of control the other players get in his head and they take advantage of him.To play corner in nfl you need a short memory and discipline. You have to drill and drill and maintain strong discipline in practice so you can play with discipline during the game. It isn’t just burns it’s all over the place in the coaching staff and in the players... No discipline is killing this team!

Blowing the squad up, getting rid of Tomlin...I guess these notions are fun to entertain as fantasy. Neither is realistic though. Sure, Butler might (and should) go and that would be addition by subtraction.

It is however a realistic expectation that the FO actually address high priority issues (CB, ILB) in the offseason with all this cap space. Or at least it should be. One thing that gets constantly stated on here that I am in total agreement with is that just because you've been doing things a certain way for a long time doesn't mean you keep doing them. I know they like to develop their own guys but It has been demonstrated over the last decade that they struggle with identifying and developing defensive talent, specifically in the secondary. It will be very disappointing if they don't make a serious attempts to address their issues there in free agency.

Shazier still hurts so bad. With him on this D you really have something. Them's the breaks though...FO needs to pivot now. Actually they needed to last year...

I agree totally and losing Shazier ripped the heart outta the D they lost their best (and only) game changer, they still havnt recovered.

Shazier is the scapegoat for everything wrong with this defense. Go back and look at the treads about the defense when he was playing. He was an oft injured ILB that missed tackles and couldn't cover good TEs. Now he is God of all LBs and makes Lambert look like Pee Wee Herman. I understand he was a good player but he wasn't as great as some make him out to be. He wouldn't turn this into a great defense and he wouldn't be able to cover WRs in space.

Bullshit

Nobody is scapegoating ****, they had a pulse with him in there, that was obvious. It was only a year ago and the cheap *** Steelers never addressed the huge gaping hole at LB that wrecked what was a solid, average defense into the soft weak, play 2 quarters then fold mess we have now.

Add in the busts at DB and we are where we are. No playmakers, just a bunch of overpaid, overrated DLmen that huff and puff and disappear in every 4th qtr of every game.

Weak up the middle, can't stop the run either.

I root for the Steelers to win always...but every time they lose is one step closer to getting rid of this coaching staff...

...so I'm OK with it.

Tomlin isnt going anywhere, he has that job for life. The Rooneys would never in a million years fire him, you know that.

Williams and Bostic make Shazier look like Rod Woodson in coverage. In the past two seasons, Shazier had SIX interceptions and TWENTY passed defended. That limits a lot of points, and get the defense off the field.

I have to disagree a bit. The loss of Shazier killed our coverage underneath. Our defense would be much better with him. Which brings me to this point. We had a chance to draft some very good middle linebackers.... we didn't draft one.

Unfortunately, I know you're correct.

Keith Butler is a freaking retard.
We've known for 15 years that the Pats**** love to throw 10-15 yard passes over the middle. Let's see if Butler puts anyone there to break up passes and gets pressure on Br*dy. Be a refreshing change from the past.

Yes, they are. Every time the defense does something wrong it's "Well if Shazier were in there that wouldn't happen." It's bullshit. Shazier never started more than 12 games.. NEVER. He also struggled covering TEs. I forget the game but one game a TE ate him alive and most on here bitched for weeks about it. They didn't have a pulse because of Shazier.... he isn't NFL Jesus.

If you're looking for the return of a Blitzburg/Steel Curtain defense u are dreaming.....those days are long long long long gone.

Score 30 pts a game or dont even show up. Defensive playmakers are the rarest gems in the league, we have NONE.

He had 7 in 4 years so what? He was oft injured and struggled in coverage with TEs. He also had 3.5 sacks in 2 years. Hell Bostic has 2.5 just this year. Also V. Williams on the other side has 12.5 sacks in 2 years while Shazier only has 7 for his entire career. That would do more to stop the passing game than PDs.

Again, Shazier was a very good ILB but he isn't the reason the defense is giving up more points. The CBs have been injured, the coaches are putting LBs on WRs and the organization didn't even try to upgrade the ILB position.

the problem is playing with 2 DL and using LBs when you have rover Safeties

I'd trade three late 1sts for a Polamalu: Burns, Dupree and Edmunds

Good points Vader, but Shazier is the reason why our D doesn't get turnovers. He was our playmaker when he was healthy and flying around the field.

"When he was healthy" is right. But still when he was injured the defense still did fine. Now that he is out indefinitely people place more emphasis on him. When the Steelers lost Woodson to FA did the Steelers just mail it in? Hell Cowher was replacing players better than Shazier almost every year before the new stadium was built. He lost Jerroll Williams, Hardy Nickerson and Donald Evans in a two year span. Williams and Nickerson he had for just one year and they left. And that was when defense really mattered unlike today.

And that's just off the top of my head. There is no way one guy that has never played more than 12 games a year and has only really started 2 years is that vital to a team. Shazier was a good player but he isn't the reason the team is struggling so hard on defense. It's the scheme, coaching and injuries to the CBs.

I have to disagree, losing him is a reason we give up more points. When Shazier went out, the defense clearly took a turn for the worst. Shazier got the defense off the field by making big plays and limiting them. He " won " some game with key turnovers, something this defense can't get.

We have plenty of ILB's can blitz. Williams, Bostic, etc... A sack isn't worth an interception. Heck I'd take 2 PD's over a sack in most cases as its two downs lost vs. one.

We agree on the CB's. We need better and IMO to replace Davis.

I'd say today, it's scheme & coaching. SHAZ has been gone more than 1 full off-season and not much energy put into replacement. Combine that with our scheme not changing and if anything maybe changing for the worse. 2DL sets have been here way way way to long and LBs covering tight ends seem even more prevailing than ever.........................scheme and coaching.

Salute the nation

Honestly, what good would top five draft picks do?

Talent is not the issue with this team. The Steelers are right up there with the likes of the Rams, Saints, Chiefs and Patriots in terms of overall talent.

The difference is the coaches.

No coach in recent memory has gotten less out of more than Mike Tomlin.

Mike McCarthy is the only one who comes close, and the Packers finally showed mercy on their fans by moving on.
