This game gives me flashbacks of game 5 of the '12 NLDS between SF and Cincy, where they jumped up 4-0 off a GS from Posey; talk about a damned buzzkill

Damn..... when it rains it pours. Started over the weekend. Pitt lost. Penn State lost. Stillers lost. Now the Bucs are losin'. Hell, even the Iggles lost. The last 5 days have not been good for Pa. sports teams.

The way Bumgarner is pitching, even Cole might not have been enough. One hit through 5 innings. The Giants getting eliminated before the weekend allowed them to set up their pitching.
 
WTF, Buccos are down 5-0 to the supposedly powerless Giants (he said from the hotel bar in Ft. Wayne, IN where he finds himself. Checking out the other end of I-75 today).
 
Hurdle is giving up, leaving Hughes in to get shelled. One game playoffs are such a crapshoot. Helps when you have a pitcher like Bumgarner, and can have him well rested. You really want to avoid the one game scenario, which is why Hurdle pitched Cole on Sunday. Of course they were shut down Sunday as well.

The 1 game for the wild card teams is prefect I think.

Baseball has the best playoff setup. Not too many teams make it, and plenty of excitement.
 
I'm glad they got stomped if they were gonna lose. Figured they were done in the 4th after the Grand Slam and didn't sweat it the rest of the way. Bumgardner ate them for dinner. Volquez did not have his good stuff last night. That's a recipe for a very short playoff experience.
 
I don't like the one game playoff. I don't think 162 games of hard work should come down to one play in game. If they are going to have the extra wild card then I think it should be 3 games. If not then I would just go back to the one wild card team. The pirates actually got penalized for trying to win the division. They were unable to set their pitching while the Giants were locked into their spot already and could have Bum start the wild card game.
 
This is not a criticism, but the Pirates have no ace. All the really good teams do. We have a lot of good pitchers, good starters, but the Bucs don't have that go-to guy they need. That's a difference between the WS contenders and the teams in the PO. This off-season will be interesting because there is a lot to do. I hope they make the right decisions and see what they need to make that next step. It was an exciting season and they should a lot of resiliency. They are still in need to a few pieces and hope they go after them. They are close, but need those important components to overtake the Cards.
 
That first 4 innings of baseball was the most I watched all year. I turned it off after that.

I'm as bandwagon as it gets when it comes to baseball, considering this was the only game I paid any attention to all season, but I agree... the single elimination wildcard format sucks. Why not make it a best-of-3 series? That way each team gets to host at least one game (with all the revenues that entails), and fans get another game or two of playoff action to get excited about.
 
O's have now played it both ways. 3 years ago beat Texas on the road to win Wild Card and then lost in 5 to yanks. This year winning division going away and they get rewarded with Detroit and their ******* pitching staff. Still, want to avoid 1 game playoff, play better during one or two of the 162 and win the division. No different with any other sport.

I had tickets to next Tuesdays game at PNC if the Bucs had won. Oh well, hoping that the O's series goes to a fifth game. Have tickets for that one.

93.7 was interviewing people at the afternoon street party outside PNC Park and asking them who their favorite players were. No one could name anyone besides McCutcheon. It was f'n hilarious.
