Keith Butler hears his critics. He knows what they think. But he has just two goals. Have the top defense in the NFL and win a Super Bowl. The rest is just noise.

This article & statements he says tells it all....

"If they fire me, so what? I’ll go play golf," & also "Do I want to keep my dadgum job? Sure I do. But it’s not like it’s going to kill me. It’s not a life or death situation. I enjoy what I do. I want to keep doing it. But if I don’t, it’s not a big deal."

I suspect that Mike Tomlin is more criticized that Keith "yes man" Butler.

errrrr, hope his D performs well or I will buy him a new driver to hit his own two balls.

Not sayin it has to be life or death, but dude take the job a little more seriously.

How, or why should he be, when the HC is basically the DC? Hell Butler is just a glorified LB coach getting paid as a DC.

I'm pretty sure most in the DC position would say we want to be No.1 and win a super bowl. I hope he's right.

He can't be concerned about criticism. He is right in what he says. What is he supposed to do listen to irrate fans on phone in calls after big losses. But he should be prepared for life after Steelers. If it doesn't get better this year with all the talent at their disposal he will be fired. To provide cover for the guy who really should be held responsible.

Don't be silly...

You honestly think that's his defense? You don't see the Tampa 2 all over this defense? Tomlin slipped up last year and said himself he was late getting the defensive signal into the game, why is the HC sending in defensive signals if he's not running the defense? The guys that cover the team said Tomlin was getting his hands into the defense Lebeau's final season here.

Maybe DK or Hunter can ask some appropriate questions to the right people... and do a news story.. We cant be the only ones who are questioning this.

Didn't Butler mention stopping Eifert in Week 17 when dude has been on IR for weeks?

After Shades made the Blake Bortles offense look like the 1984 SF 49ers in the playoff debacle, Jim Wexell wrote that "Tomlin won't fire Butler...because he would be firing himself."

Wex adores Mike Tomlin as a man and as a HC. Referred to him as "the most intellectual coach I have ever been around." If he said that about Tomlin's level of involvement with the D, it may as well have been EF Hutton saying it.

Fire his ***. It's fine for him to feel that way, but don't tell a reporter that you really don't care if you lose your job. He's the defensive coordinator for the ******* Pittsburgh Steelers. I'm sure we can find someone passionate about keeping the job.

Honest mistake by a coach who was probably practicing his golf game instead of planning a defensive strategy. He knew someone else would tell him what to do on gameday anyway.
Never happened with LeBeau because he was great at both golf and defensive strategies.

I don't know...but I think it will be better this year...

The offense had 49 drives that ended in the 4th quarter or OT.
They scored on 30.6% of those drives. Good for 25th in the NFL. Punted on 40.8%, 29th in the league. TD% they ranked 23rd, TO rate they ranked 20th.
Yards per drive? 27th.
Time of possession per drive? 21st.
Not a single stat the offense ranked inside the top 20 in the league. Our offense was flat out bad in the 4th quarter last season.
Defense had 54 4th quarter & OT drives.
Scoring % they ranked 16th.
Punts they ranked 16th.
Touchdowns – 21st.
Turnovers? 25th.
Yards per drive? 6th.
Time of possession per drive? 4th.
the Steelers defense averaged the 3rd worst field position to start every drive.
The point?
The defense wasn’t good last season, it was average, and in some areas well below average.
But the offense? In the 4th quarter the Steelers offense was terrible. When they had leads they didn’t score points, run the clock down or set the defense up with good field position.
The great defenses of the mid 2000’s we had wouldn’t thrive in that kind of environment. 2008 the offense ranked 3rd in time of possession per drive, 10th in scoring percentage, punted the 9th fewest times and the defense had the 21st best field position.
This offense has to do a better job of helping the defense than it did last year. 2018 was one of the worst 4th quarter offenses we’ve ever had.

The words of a man who doesn't give a **** anymore. Guaranteed Butler knows two things: 1) It's not his defense he's running and 2) He won't be fired, they'll just let his contract run out like they did with everyone else.

Lots of interesting points to consider. I can't wait until we get back to the point where we have confidence in holding a lead by our defense stonewalling a team or the offense just continuing to march down the field and demoralizing the other teams hopes of a comeback

The problem is that you could flip all of those stats for the other 3 quarters. So you're blaming the offense for building a lead headed into the 4th qtr but not the defense for not holding the lead? If you look at the other 3 qtrs. then you'll see the offense having horrible field position and the defense having great field position.

Then your stats get difficult. Are you talking about just the 4th qtr. when you mention the 2008 defense? You said the offense ranked 3rd in TOP per drive. But is that just the 4th qtr? 10th in scoring? Just the 4th?

This ohead coach / defensive coordinator has to do a better job of helping the defense than he did last year. 2018 was one of the worst 4th quarter one in the same head coach / defensive CORDINATOR we’ve ever had.

Finally making sense

Salute the nation

Defense was tied with Detroit at 16th in points allowed. Offense in a 3 way tie at 6th for points scored and 4th in total yards.
