well they are going to have to find some run stoppers....Bush is going to have to play much much better and the corners are going to have to prove themselves

but other than that...sure

I saw versions over time that could be considered close. But to be fair this years version has a chance to be fairly good but the run D probably won't blink from atrocious to elite. So no curtain. Just hopefully improvement over last year's version.

I seriously doubt it. But, Loudermilk apparently put weight on last season and this offseason. He is over 300 lbs (I think around 310 now). Leal also added weight since he last played. That should bode well for both of them. The line is the biggest question mark. A healthy Heyward and Alualu (in his 2020 form) will sure help.

Depends if Shades still insists on calling the defense or if he steps back and lets Austin and Flores do their jobs.

This is a must. Also, Laudermilk must step up. Anything Leal can do is a bonus.

Not even close! You have TJ, Minkah, and an old Cam and thats it. Th rest are just guys or still unproven players. To try and make a comparison to the 70s great defenses is nuts.
HOF guys like Greene, Ham, Lambert, Blount, Shell. Great players like Russell, Greenwood, Wagner, Edwards, White and Holmes. Greenwood and Russell should be in the HOF.
All that 70s talent coached by the great defensive coach Bud Carson. Our current defense coached by Cool Shades. Give me a break!

Blasphemy! Absolutely not.

Before we start comparing them to the Steel Curtain lets first ask if they have the potential to be the next version of the great Blitzburgh defense of the 90's... which included the likes of LLoyd, Kirkland, Greene, Lake, Woodson, Darren Perry, Joel Steed...which was no Steel Curtain.

I agree 100% steelhurt. Anyone making comparisons to the Steel Curtain has absolutely no idea how great the players on that defense were. It's almost 50 years later and we're still talking about these players (even the ones not in the Hall of Fame) individually and collectively. I can guarantee there won't be more than one or two on this defense that will be talked about 50 years from now.

The 2008 team was pretty damn close. I'd be happy with really improving against the run with better inside DL play and Myles Jack and being a top 5 defense.

To many are banking on a Aualu "prime" return. I think he gives us decent play but lasts about 1/2 - to - 3/4 season. Not at the top of his game but at least 4/5ths there.

Imo the 3-4 supposed to allow lb's to make tackles/ plays.
Bush was so bad , he has you all clamoring for alualu.
Bush is/ was the problem.

I certainly agree with you but add Bush was ONE of the problems. The DL needed / needs help & Alualu's healthy return will help. Loudermilk's step up from rookie to sophmore will help as well.

I want a defensive teammate getting into a fight with BUSH durring TC and letting him know this is some serious stuff, no *****-footing around

As for the original poster (thanks Coolie) article

I can't see "Damascus" Steel Curtain

B-U-T

P-O-S-S-I-B-L-Y

Cast-Iron STEEL CURTAIN

Steel Curtain defense comes around exactly 1 time. Nothing will come close. Ravens had a good defense for a few years same with the Bears. but nothing has ever had the longevity of the Steel Curtain and nothing will

Don't forget to put that 2008 steeler defense in that group of rats and bears but I think the 2008 was a tad bit better than both of those.

100% agree. Bet defense we have had in a long long time. but again only for a year or two. nothing like the longevity of the Steel Curtain

I’m hoping Loudermilk and Highsmith evolve…and Tyson has one more year in the sun.

They definitely need someone to rotate with him. No way he can play more than 2/3 of the snaps and maybe closer to 50%.

Totally hear yaz BLITZ, there won't ever be a dominating STEEL CURTAIN again by any team including the STEELERS. Free Agency has put a guarantee to that.

Wormley, Laudermilk, Alualu, the FA guy, Jack at Mack linebacker. It should get better.

I'm seeing the same thing and definately feel they have to be better than last year. If BUSH chooses to participate then we can be MUCH better. If BUSH is just going through the motions similar to last year then I want another defensive player to get in a big fight with him at training camp, big production with it culminating in either put up / or retire but you aren't going to not participate to the full degree.

Sometimes a player needs to be called out in front of the team to make a staement and let them decide publicly(team-wise) on how they are going to perceed.

I think one year in the mid 70s or so they had eight or nine defensive players on the field at the same time in a pro bowl.

The rules changes in the NFL favoring the offense and “handcuffing” the defense makes it hard to compare modern defenses to the 70s steel curtain.

Back in the 70's all three facets of the game had near equal power of scoring

TODAYS power balance seems about 55% offense, 30% defense and 15% special teams. It definately changes the original intent of the game.

That's a BIG power differential and definately can be seen in games.
