I used to be on board with the idea that a franchise qb was worth anything you paid,
But recently I’ve been wavering on that…
Qbs really need a good coach to develop them and many really need the right system…
The risk is far greater than the cost even for established qbs We’e seen this with teams going out to get guys like Rodgers, who was immediately injured, Wilson, who didn’t fit the system, and Watson, whose cost was astronomical and might be damaged goods..
Yeah its worked out trading for Manning and Stafford onto stacked teams, but that isn’t what typically happens… but for a straight draft pick? Thats far riskier….
The thing is over the past 25 years, the only QBs drafted 1 overall that even remotely lived up to the hype were the Mannings, and maybe Burrow, but the jury is still out on him. ( Lawrence and Young are still too new too).
Kyler Murray might be something, but I wouldn’t really say he is established as an elite qb yet and he is coming back from a hude injury… he gets an incomplete too..
Stafford was good, but not like HOF good and has an overall losing record and his Super Bowl win didn’t come with the team that draft him.
Vick and Newton were terrible passers and each barely over .500 in wins… one had 10 more wins than losses, the other 7…
Goff and Palmer were probably better off as low first round guys.. definitely not worth 1 oa
Maysfield, Alex Smith, Bradford and Winston should have all been like 2nd or 3rd rounders …
David Carr and Tim Couch like fourth rounders…
Russell was a complete waste of time…
Many, if not all of these guys, were hyped as franchise QBs that would be Hall of Fame caliber…
I mf we were a qb away, Id move TJ straight up for what? Maybe 4 of them… drafting up to take a qb at #1 oa is a fools errand… peyton was probably tge only qb worth the haul being suggested here…
