College Football Week 0

College football is back with 5 games, including 1 ranked matchup.

Preseason rankings are out with the Top 10
1 Texas
2 Penn State
3 Ohio State
4 Clemson
5 Georgia
6 Notre Dame
7 Oregon
8 Alabama
9 LSU
10 Miami

Penn State was just 5 points shy of #1. People will say they're overrated but they really should be #1. Penn State returns a great defense, the best OL in the country, 2 great RBs, a likely first round QB, more excellent TEs, and 3 transfer portal WRs. They also hired the top DC in the country, Jim Knowles.

It would have been nice to get that #1 ranking but even if they were #1, the winner of Texas vs Ohio State next week will no doubt be #1.

Penn State's Beaver Stadium will have slightly lower capacity this year as they renovate. They literally blew up the press box which was on stilts like an erector set. They also removed a huge section of seats below the press box and replaced them with temporary bleachers.

In other news

Cheating is now legal in college football. Or at least, it just has a tax. Be prepared to pay $30 Million and do whatever the hell you want.

The SEC has announced that staring in 2026, they will play 9 conference games to match the BIg 10. They also pledged that every team will play at least 1 conference game vs another P4 (Big 10, ACC, Big 12, SEC) team.

Fox is adding Dave Portnoy to their pregame show, which will make it almost unwatchable. That's what they needed, a loudmouth Boston sports fan and Michigan homer who thinks neither of them cheated. I assume he's their answer to McAfee on ESPN but McAfee has the energy of a big kid that works on a college show. Portnoy has the energy of an 80's high school movie villain. Pretty in Portnoy

The playoff format made a seeding change. Last year, the top 4 seeds had to be from 4 different conferences. This year it will simply be the top 4 highest ranked teams, so there's a big chance a conference will get more than 1 team with a bye. Last year byes would have been Oregon, Georgia, Texas, Penn State

I think the Bye is a curse. Every Bye team lost last year. They chalked it up to a problem of seeding, but I say it's mainly because the team on bye was rusty. It's not like the NFL with 1 week off. Last year Oregon was off for 25 days between the Big 10 Championship and they first p;ayoff game vs Ohio State. Oregon got jumped early and couldn't catch up. Each team with a bye played like crap in the first half.

They should eliminate the bye. Expand to 16 teams, no byes. Your reward for being a top seed is playing a low seed you should handle easily as a warm up game.

New rule against Fake Injuries to slow down a hurry up offense. A team will be charged a Timeout if it's training staff goes onto the field to tend to a player AFTER the ball was spotted. If the team is out of TO, there's a 5 yard penalty. So no more looking at the sideline and falling down so you can get a substitution.

Now the games

Why have the only ranked teams play a noon? I bet half the country won't evan realize this game is on.

Idaho State @ UNLV 4:00 UNLV -29.5
Former Florida head coach Dan Mullen is at UNLV and due to schedule, they are being predicted as one of the last teams to sneak into the playoffs

Fresno State @ Kansas 6:30 FOX KU -14.5
Kurt Warner's son EJ is expected to start at QB for Fresno State

Sam Houston @ Western Kentucky 7:00 CBSSN WKU -2.5

Stanford @ Hawaii 7:30 CBS Haw -2.5

former Colts QB Andrew Luck is now General Manager at Stanford. His first move was to hire Frank Reich as head coach. Hawaii is coached by their former record setting QB, Timmy Chang

Warner’s son huh. 🤔

I will be glued to the QBs this year like no other!

Tape will you be watching closer or business as usual?

Great write up Tape! Very informative.

If you add a couple useless introductory paragraphs, virtually the same every time, and one sentence at the end asking "what do you think", then you could have a real future!

Thank You tape, for doing these. Appreciate yaz

Although I don’t know a lot about college football, I follow through tape’s threads and inputs here.

Georgia and Alabama don’t surprise me in where they are, but Penn being #2 is just a tinge surprise.

Salute the nation

Big loss for Attendance U. this year ;)

With players getting paid, that's another $30 million schools would have to come up with. A good football team is probably going to cost around $15-20 million at least.

Last year's playoff setup was pretty dumb, so I'm happy they've made some improvements. Completely agree on the bye, college has way too much time between games. They're also punished by not getting a home game (or did they fix that?).

Looking at the playoffs and this Dublin game, off-campus games are the worst. Even the neutral site games in NFL stadiums played in a dome on turf make for a sterile college environment.

As always, love the college preview posts!

I am kinda like DIC. Not into college ball as much but feel like I know what is going do to these threads. Ty tape!
I do watch as many GA games as I can. I guess you can say I am a closet fan.

The Coogs not in the top 10?
What a travesty.

Probably because a primetime EST kickoff would be 1:00 am tomorrow in Ireland, would be my guess.
