College Football Week 1
After a warmup last week, college football is back in full swing with some big time matchups.
There are games 5 days in a row Thurs to Monday
With the steelers looking for their next franchise QB, we have to be watching the top prospects. I watched a bunch of Miami OH games to see Big Ben back in the day.
Drew Allar Penn State
Garrett Nussmeier LSU
Cade Klubnik CLemson
Arch Manning Texas - granpda Archie swears he's not entering the 26 draft
Sam Leavitt Arizona State
LaNorris Sellers South Carolina - running QB with great arm
Luke Altmyer Illinois - probably not a 1st round talent
John Mateer Oklahoma
Carson Beck Miami - looks like a meth head but lots of experience
The SEC has some big matchups. Just remember the SEC non-conference game rules. If the SEC teams win, it is absolute proof that the whole conference is superior and it's not debatable. If they lose, then it's meaningless because the other team got lucky and it's a long season.
The playoff committe will now take strength of scedule into account. Sounds great but who determines strength of schedule? It the rankings are biased then SOS is biased too. Coincidentally, shortly after this came about, ESPN's FPI rating bumped multiple SEC teams up for no reason at all. FPI is supposed to be data driven. What new data came up in the last month?
Several former NFL stars are coaching college this year
Deion - Colorado HC
Michael Vick - Norfolk State HC
Eddie George - Bowling Green HC
DeSean Jackson - Delaware State HC
Hines Ward - ARizona State WR coach
Marshal Faulk - Colorado RB coach
Warren Sapp - Colorado DL coach
Jason Taylor - Miami FL DE coach
DeMarco Murray - Oklahoma RB coach
Now for the games
Saturday
Nevada at 2 Penn State 3:30 CBS PSM -43.5
Nevada QB is Chuba Purdy, brother of Brock Purdy. That may be the most interesting thing about this game. Now for a general Penn State preview
Penn State's OL should be dominant this year. They've said they have 7 starters and may roll out a few 7 OL formations This shold deliver a dominant run game with returning RBs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. Word is that Allen, nicknamed Fatman has hit the wieght ruum, dropped a few pounds and is quicker. We should also see backups get some carries.
The passing game will be all about the new portal WRs Kyron Hudson (USC), a big outside possession WR, Devonte Ross (Troy), a fast Calvin Austin type outside WR, and Trebor Pena (Syracuse), a great route running slot. There's lots of reports that true freahman Koby Howard has looked great and will get playing time. Redshirt Freshman speedster Tyseer Denmark could push for playing times as well.
Tyler Warren is gone but they still have great TEs. Khalil Dinkins will start. He's a great blocker and decent receiver. If the WRs are much improved, then Dinkins will be a good enough receiver to get open. Dinkins ran a 4.5 in camp and made Bruce Feldman's "Fresks List" of best athletes in teh country. Behind him are rising stars Luke Reynolds (he ran the fake punt vs Minnesota) and ANdrew Rappleyea.
Allar gets to have the same OC for his second year in a row. It should be more wide open with improved WRs. They also hired Trace McSorley as an assistant. He could help Allar be a bit more aggressive.
The defense is stacked at all 3 levels. DE Dani Dennis-Sutton and CB AJ Harris are projected 1st round picks. DT Zane Durant and OLB Tony Rojas made Feldman's Freaks List. In a surprise redshirt freshman Antoine Belgrave-SHorter was named starting Safety along with Zakee Wheatley. Thet means Bama Transfer King Mack will be depth. Jim Knowles likes to play multiple safeties so depth is important.
Penn State has eveything you need to make a serious championship run.
THURSDAY
25 Boise State at South Florida 5:30 ESPN Bois -5.5
Boise got blown out
Central Arkansas at Missouri 7:30 SECN
Penn State transfer QB Beau Pribula will split reps. I'd hate for him to have transferred and then not start.
Nebraska at Cincinnati 9:00 ESPN Neb -6.5
from Arrowhead Stadium. This counts as a Cincy home game but it will likely be all Nebraska fans in KC. Nebraska 5 star QB Dominik Raiola tries to emulate Patrick Mahomes. Even tries to look like him but he's been up and down so far. I've seen some with Nebraska as a darkhorse playoff team due to their schedule.
FRIDAY
Auburn at Baylor 8:00 FOX Aub -2.5
Auburn looking to bounce back after some rough seasons
Georgia Tech at Colorado 8:00 ESPN GT -4.5
How will Deion do without his shark in a pond, Travis Hunter?
SATURDAY
1 Texas at 3 Ohio State 12:00 FOX OSU -1.5
This is the first time Texas has ever opend as preseason #1. That's very surprising. Their stay at 1 could be short lived. Ohio State has the best offensive player WR Jeremiah Smith and best defensive player S Caleb Downs. Texas will start Arch Manning at QB and OSU has named redshirt freshman Julian Sayin as their starter. Manning is reportedly making $6.8 million from cash payments and advertising deals. No woder granpa Archis says he's not leaving college early. At least not if the Browns have the #1 pick.
Duquesne at Pitt 12:00 ACCN No line
this is the first time they've met in 86 years.
Syracuse at 24 Tennessee 12:00 ABC Tenn 13.5
Syracuse will have to replace QB Kyle McCord and top WR Trebor Pena. Tenn has a new QB after the debacle with Nico Iamaleva (sp) who tried to hold out for more money. He ended up at UCLA.
8 Alabama at Florida State 3:30 ABC Ala -13.5
Bama coach DeBoer is a really godo coach, but his seat is a bit warm after missing the playoffs. Bama will start former 5 star QB Ty Simpson. he may be a better fit for DeBoaer's system than Milroe was. Throwing to stud WR Ryan Williams makes things easier. The wheels fell of the FSU program going 2-10 last year. They have to hope to just play close at least to build some momentum.
9 LSU at 4 Clemson 7:30 ABC Clem -3.5
matchup of 2 likely 1st round QBs Nussmeier for LSU and Klubnik for Clemson. Clemson has a loaded roster. This game means a lot more for LSU because Clemson's schedule is pretty manageable. We've seen that 3 losses means you may miss the playoffs. If LSU loses this, it might means they can only lose 2 the rest of the way with a tough schedule.
SUNDAY
Virginia Tech at 13 South Carolina 3:00 ESPN SC -7.5
get a look at QB LaNorris Sellers
6 Notre Dame at 10 Miami 7:30 ABC ND -2.5
**** Notre Dame, I'm still salty. Because of the new seeding rules, Notre Dame can get a playoff Bye this year if they finish in the top 4. Miami has Georgia transfer QB Carson Beck. He's streaky but talented. ND will start CJ Carr, grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, who was not a cheating scumbag like Jim Harbaugh
MONDAY
TCU at North Carolina 8:00 ESPN TCU -3.5
the college debut of Bill Belicheck as head coach for UNC. Will his girlfried have final say on gameplan?
