College Football Week 1

Did any of the top QBs do well other than Nussmeier? Allar did ok, but he was playing cupcakes. On a side note Allar was 22/26 with 216 yrds and a TD which = 39.4 QBR. The backup was 7/9 for 86 yrds 0 TDs which = 88.7 QBR. I don't think anyone should be using QBR to compare QBs

I feel like Bama got a first year post Saban prop up to keep them relevant. They are going to the scrap heap now. But too good a program to keep down. Might be a coach or two but they will be back. Maybe Ill like them then.

QBR is utter crap.. an analyst attaches a total points value to every play then grades the qb by his decision all without knowing the play call or design... so famously two qbs can line up in that same formation, run the same play with the same results and get grossly different QBR's from it

Subjective stats like QBR and 80% of what PFF does are trash

Another QB people should be keeping an eye on this year is Austin Simmons at Ole Miss. Third year, 19 years old, sat two years behind Dart. I’ve mentioned him before, really under the radar of pre season QB standouts.
Looks like he had a decent game, little high on the INTs..

Passing

A. Simmons

20 to 31 Completions to Attempts, 341 Yards, 3 Touchdowns, 2 Interceptions

Klubnik is a day 3 QB. Nussmeier is interesting.
I liked what I saw from Nuss a pure pocket passer.

He gets my early nod.

Will watch Sellers tonight.

QB Mateer from the Sooners had a decent game.

30 to 37 Completions to Attempts, 392 Yards, 3 Touchdowns, 1 Interception

Ya had me at PFF is trash 🤣

One of my favorite QB prospects Taylen Green had himself a solid opener.

24/31 322 yards and 6 TDs
9 rushes for another 41 yards

Vs a tune up opponent in Alabama A&M
First of many great games I expect from the kid tho

I give arch some slack. First real start, first game of the year, on the road, and against maybe the best defense in the country, but he flat out missed several throws. OSUs QB didn't do anything special, but he outplayed Manning.

At one point, Sayin was 3-7 with 4 drops, he didn’t get a lot of help from his receivers. Also dropped one in the bucket to Innis in tight coverage but he couldn’t come down with it. He’s very accurate.

100% disagree. Dropped passes ding a QB’s passer rating, but not PFF grade. Objective stats are great for fantasy football, but scouts, GMs, and coaches rely on subjective grades.

Passer rating is what fooled so many Steeler fans that Trubisky was good. In 2018 he had a 95.4 rating, but was 32nd in PFF because there was a lot of receiver help and luck involved.

There was also a preseason game in Fields last year in Chicago where fans were raving about his perfect passer rating. He literally threw two bubble screens that DJ Moore took 50+ yards for touchdowns.

In 2021, Trevon Diggs was a first team All Pro because he had 11 INT, but his PFF grade was low because outside of those 11 plays, he had 1004 more on tape of him getting torched and not playing the run well.

People used to think Dan Moore “owned” Myles Garrett because in one game, Myles didn’t have many stats, but he literally beat Dan Moore on every single pass rush. That was mitigated by getting rid of the ball quick.

I could go on, but suffice it to say, when it comes to player evaluation, counting stats are notorious liars.

Yeah and their star WR (Smith) was acting like Pickens. The TE dropped a first down while Smith was open and he pouted. Then Smith proceeded to drop 2 balls himself. I was not impressed w/ his body language I can see him becoming a diva in the NFL

PFF did enough to get helmet swinger a DPOY award……………. There is that.

I totally hear yaz madinsomniac, appreciate your post(s) along the way.

Salute the nation

Scouts Gms and talent evaluators are wrong more often than right. Most draft picks are busts. The first round has what, a 53% fail rate?
And PFF is notoriously mocked in pro circles because the evaluations they do are often useless without knowing the technical intricacies of playcalls... which is why, despite having a terrible PFF grade year in and year out, Dan Moore just signed a huge contract and Pouncey will go to the Hall of Fame.

Espn owns QBR. It tried to make up a stat to show tge value of running QBs, but they ended up making up a popularity contest instead. Its not even consistent because it varies from evaluator to evaluator. They even admit this.

There are way better and less subjective advanced analytics available.

So we know Passer rating isnt perfect, although the players with the best all time passer ratings overwhelmingly are the best qbs...
if you wantvto look at sacks, you can see sacks taken abd yards lost.
If you are worried about drops, that is tracked by several places, (though unofficial because nobody can agree what a drop is) however there also is the less subjective accuracy stats that just account if the ball was thrown within a catchable range of the wr. You can account for YAC and air yards...
so an objective rating without the whole aspect of " do i think he made the correct choices on a play I dont even know the technical data for" could be left out.

But again, it was ESPN... they were looking for a metric to elevate certain QBs and nothing objective worked, so they basically added an opinion factor.

Ben would shrug off two defenders and throw a TD and get dinged for holding it too long, Vick would run for 24 yards on 3rd and 25 after taking a 15 yard sack on 2nd down and he was the second coming because he made 4 guys miss and nobody was open and he gave his team a chance on 4th down or something...

It used to be comically bad when they first rolled it out...

Not by PFF, they loved him in his prime for exactly those kinds of brilliant plays. Every NFL team and major college program pays PFF for their services. That 53% fail rate would be much higher w/o analytics.

It ain’t perfect, but IMO it’s the best thing going. They warned us about Russ last year but people kept citing his TD/INT numbers from his last year in Denver and mocked them, they were right once again. Just like they were with Mitch, Fields, etc.

There are probably a hundred people in the know who have called out PFF as garbage with specifics. Listen to the JJ Watt rant about how bad they are on the Pat Macafee show, or the Ramon Foster stuff about Pouncey

PFF was one site that got popular because Chris Collinsworth bought it and promoted it from his announcers position... there were far better, less subjective advanced stat sites around like FO or PFR

Somebody mentioned Green earlier in the year, may have been you.

I don’t follow college much, so didn’t know his name well. I’ve since watched some stuff on his and I’m a fan.

Curious to see how sellers does tonight, but Taylen Green has my attention.
