The first playoff rankings were released with 2 mighty Big 10 teams in the top 4 along with 2 southern schools of regional interest. With 3 of the top 4 playing undefeated opponents this weekend, there will be some shakeups for next week.
Game of the Week
4 Penn State at 17 Minnesota - Noon on ABC
Safe to say, the biggest game in Minn history. They are 8-0 for first time since 1941. They are still a mystery. They are clearly good, but how good? Nobody really knows. Their schedule has been very easy thus far. They have not played a team in the top 50 yet. Their best win is against Nebraska who is not good and had their backup QB playing. That brings up another quirk for Minn this year. They have faced the opponents backup QB in every game. Each week, the opposing starter was either out or got injured during the game.
So nobody really knows how good Minnesota is. They will be beyond fired up for this game. They play disciplined and will put up a fight. But this might just be too much of a shock for Minn to face the kind of athletes Penn State has on defense after the cake walk they’ve faced so far. Minnesota defense will have to keep PSU close so their offense can stick with their run game.
And how will Minn run? The PSU front 7 is far better than any they have faced. Penn State’s starting DT is suspended because he spit at a Mich State player during an altercation. Could that weaken the front enough for Minn to get their run game going?
It does concern me that this is the biggest game in Minnesota history and this could be a letdown for Penn State. Maybe they got swelled heads for being ranked 4 in the playoffs and are looking ahead to Ohio State. If that’s the case, they can be in for an upset.
I think Penn State just has too much talent, especially on defense for Minn to handle. If Minn had some tough games under their belt, I think they’d have a better chance, but going from cupcakes to playing a defense with multiple NFL talents will be too much of a shock.
Maryland at 1 Ohio State. noon on Fox
i only mention this because the best player in college, DE Chase Young will not play due to some sort of NCAA investigation of something from last year. OSU will stomp them anyway but the status of Young going forward is a major issue.
2 LSU at 3 Alabama. 3:30 on CBS
could be a playoff elimination game, but only if it’s a blowout or if LSU wins. If LSU wins then Bama will not play in the SEC Champ game which means their resume at the end of the year will not be good enough to go ahead of a 1 loss conference champ. Of course, I’ll believe them getting snubbed when I see it, but that’s what all the stats people are saying.
LSU on the other hand, can still be playoff viable with a close loss because they do have some bigger wins on their resume.
Is Tua 100%. I’m guessing he is. Bama has played a weak schedule so far. I think they will get off to a slow start as Tua gets back in rhythm and LSU comes out sky high. But LSU hasn’t played anybody like Bama either and I’m thinking Bama takes control in the second half and wins.
Burrow has looked great but his arm strength is not great. Bama will take away the easy throws and force him to throw into windows. Burrow wins or loses the Heisman in this game. I think he comes up short and throws some INTs that are the difference.
18 Iowa at 13 Wisconsin. 4:00. Fox
Both teams with a lot to prove. This is pretty much an elimination game in the Big 10 west. Both have 2 conference losses. Minn is unbeaten but both still play Minn so they can overtake them and win the west. Iowa is tough. You have to play a good game to beat them. Wisky has 2 straight losses. The choke vs Illinois and the beat down from Ohio State. This is thier chance to salvage the season.
