College Football Week 8

Tough game last week. I knew it would be tough going on the road against a highly ranked opponent but i was expecting more. But hey, keep your heads up Bama. There's always next week.

Minnesota at 16 Penn State 7:30 ABC PSU -4.5
Penn State's run defense was awful last week. The second level defenders bit on every ball fake and were out of their gaps all game. In comes Minnesota who has a run scheme similar to Michigan. Minnesota's senior QB Tyler Morgan may not play. That won't matter if PSU doesn't stop the run.

Penn State's offense is sputtering as well. The OL had been looking improved but their best G was injured in warmups last week and did not play. He may have been playing hurt for a few games because he has not been as good as last year. The OL has struggled as PSU has been trying to force a run game.

Will PSU open up the playbook a bit? Kind of hard to do that when the OL is struggling and none of the #3 WRs have stepped up to make an impact. Hopefully a good week of practice and the whiteout crowd will wake this team up. Fans want freshman QB Drew Allar but if the OL isn't blocking and the WRs aren't getting open then the QB won't matter.

12:00 Iowa at 2 Ohio State 12:00 FOX OSU -30
Iowa's defense is tough but their offense is awful. When OSU scores their 2nd TD it could be the game winner. Iowa is the first real defense OSU will face and they may give them a bit of trouble early but Iowa doesn't have enough speed to match the OSU weapons.

14 Syracuse at 6 Clemson 12:00 ABC Clem -13.5

Syracuse is coming off an impressive win against NC State, so Syracuse is for real as a good team but can they play with a top team like Clemson. Clemson has elite talent but something seems to be missing. They are winning but not as comfortably as a team with their talent should win.

7 Ole Miss at LSU 3:30 CBS LSU -2.5
Ole Miss is undefeated and ranked 7 and still an underdog at LSU. I guess people aren't impressed with their 3 point win vs Kentucky because that's their only good team they've played. LSU is getting better under Brian Kelley and are coming off big win against Florida.

9 UCLA at 10 Oregon 3:30 FOX Ore -6.5
UCLA has back to back ranked wins against Wash and Utah. This is a big game to determine who plays for the Pac 12 Championship. The PAC has no divisions so the top 2 team in win % play for the championship. Oregon does not play USC so if Oregon wins, they could have the inside track to the Champ game.

20 Texas at 11 Oklahoma State 3:30 ABC Tex -6

Texas had a lot of hype with the return of Quinn Ewers but they had a very tough win vs Iowa State last week to pump the brakes a bit. Ok State lost in 2 OT to TCU. Like the PAC, the Big 12 does not have divisions so the top 2 teams go to the champ game. The loser of this game may be on the outside looking in.

24 Miss State at 6 Alabama 7:00 ESPN Ala -21
Bama should crush them but after last week, you have to wonder about that Bama pass defense. Even Texas A&M's struggling offense scored points. Miss State doesn't have the athletes to stay in this one, but it will be interesting to see if Bama can plug the holes in that defense.

17 Kansas State at 8 TCU 8:00 FS1 TCU -3.5
another game to set up the Big 12 championship as the winner will be in 1st place. TCU is coming off 3 straight ranked wins and KState is coming off a bye.

Bama isn't as good as they were ranked to start the season. They are very undisciplined with a ton of penalties and their D looked horrible last week. That was their 3rd game where they almost or did lose. I think they win this one but they won't make it to the playoffs this year.

Penn State, my team, is just terrible coached by Franklin. I say all the time that he and Tomlin seem so similar in coaching results. Terrible play-calling. Handing the QB job to Clifford with no competition because he came back for his 20th season was dumb. It's all about money in college football now. They brought in several top-ranked QB's and will probably lose 1 or 2 of them before the end of the year because they want to start. I can easily see them losing this homecoming game. They will end up with 4 or 5 losses.

Thanks for the write up Tape as usual always good.

After the game, Franklin did say that Penn State had to get bigger. That's good because they have constantly been undersized. You can win that way with speed but you have to play perfectly.

Franklin has his faults but I do think one of his strengths is that he does admit mistakes and isn't afraid to make changes. Too many coaches just keep doubling down on their own system. I think Franklin tried to build Penn State to beat Ohio State. That's why he recruits all speed on defense and to his credit, PSU does play Ohio State pretty well. The problem is that you also need some beef to play in the Big 10 and if you want to win in the playoffs.

The good news is with the transfer portal, you can make that kind of change quickly. I'm guessing Franklin will be looking at big DTs at smaller programs in the portal for next year.

Do most feel that BAMA dropped far enough or should it have been less? From 1 to 6 but they loss to Tennessee, a team of strength.

Thanks for these write ups Tape. I am definitely ignorant when it comes to college football ,I love to watch the odd game and this helps me distinguish who’s who. Started watching more last year, especially Pitt because of all the Pickett to Steelers rumors. Don’t really have a team, have rooted for the Huskies in the past mostly because they are the closest to me.

If you could once in a while highlight a certain player or two to look out for, especially if it pertains to a position of need for the Steelers, that would be great as well. Cheers

Just find a list of the top rated olinemen and hope and pray we aren’t too enamored with some LB or WR or freaking Punter to ignore the line again

After last week, this week seems a bit boring to me.
Iowa's QBs suck.
Their first pass of the game was ridiculous. It looked like it was drawn up to throw to OSU.

This week seems a bit boring to me compared to last week. WKU did come out victorious in the game of the week.

Ohio State QBs lack of success in the NFL has to be tied to how much talent they have elsewhere around the field… they must never learn how to compete right or something… it never made sense to me but it’s definitely a thing

I was hoping Syracuse was going to pull one out.

There is definitely something to that. Look at the last several Buckeye QBs that have been all-world in college, then sub-mediocre in the NFL.... and look at the WRs they had. The Ohio State WR talent is ridiculous.

Stroud obviously has an NFL arm and makes a lot of great throws, but he also makes a lot of bad decisions and bad throws. I don't think he's going to break the streak of disappointing Buckeye NFL QBs.

Hats off to Iowa's defense. That was the toughest 54-10 win ever, by anybody. Iowa got no help whatsoever from their O. I think it would have been a closer game if Iowa had just taken a knee on every play, then punted every 4th down.

Clifford is in mid season form. That pick was horrible. Over threw Washington to the wrong side. Guy is mid. At best.

He definitely didn’t seem to put it in the right spot.
