I mean, this is all going to lead to higher crime rates. It's just a matter of how much the public is willing to take.
Criminal justice is almost ALWAYS a pendulum cycle. Crime gets bad and eventually the democrats don't fight as hard for "criminal protections and reform" as it hurts their election chances. Laws that are tougher on crime slowly get passed. Republicans sound off on crime as a major campaign issue (sometimes overly so). Incarceration goes up. Streets get safer. Crime goes down. Then the criminal justice loudmouths start acting up, the democrats start listening, they pass softer and softer crime bills. Crime increases and we repeat the process over and over.
In each cycle, small changes are made (maybe for the better), but why we can't just find middle ground on this is ridiculous. Both sides just go crazy.
There is no doubt in my mind however that we are in a era of higher crime rates. And it will last for at least 5+ years.
