The house cleaning continues.

McCutchen traded to San Fran. Major leaguer Kyle Crick and minor leaguer Bryan Reynolds coming back.

Kyle Crick is a 25 year old pitcher who broke into the Giants bullpen last year after previously being a starting pitcher in the organization. He logged a 3.02 ERA out of the Giants bullpen in 2017. He was a starter until he struggled with control issues and he has a mid 90's fastball. I don't know if the Pirates have plans to try him as a starter again, but if not this certainly seems like a high number of relievers coming in between this and the Cole trade. Like the other 2 pitchers they got for Cole, Crick was once ranked in MLB's Top 100 prospects.

Reynolds is a 23 year old Outfielder in the Giants farm system and is a switch hitter. He will most likely be in AA ball this year as he hit .312 with 10 homers last year with the Giants high A team. He was ranked as the Giants #4 prospect. He has only been in the Giants minor league system for a year as he was drafted in 2016 out of college, so he should be a fast riser compared to a high school kid.

Seems like a somewhat small return for a player of Andrew's caliber, although it has been said several times that the Pirates bargaining power would be greatly diminished because this was going to be Cutch's last year under contract, so the team getting him would only control him for 1 season. Still would have been nice to get a more promising player or two.

It seems that the theme for these trades so far is getting guys who were previously really high ranking prospects but whose star has diminished a little in the past year making their teams willing to deal them away, when they wouldn't have given them up at this time last year. I'm guess teams are refusing to part with their top 1-3 prospects so this is the route they are deciding to go. It's a gamble that may or not pay off.

Oh well. Josh Harrison, come on down! You are the next contestant on the trade block!

Black Monday all around the Burgh....

Pirates also just agreed to a 4 year extension with their closer Felipe Rivero. Smart move because that guy throws freaking heat. I mean Aroldis Chapman type heat. He was dominating last year. Looks like 4 years, like $22 million.

Yeah I hate it too but he's about to turn 31 so he wasn't going to get any better realistically. Emotionally though it sucks because he's the closest thing we've had to a superstar in a long long time. I wish him the best of luck, he deserves it. Consummate pro.

What exactly is he going to close? We'll just call him our 9th inning guy (8th inning guy on the road).

A valid question, but he saved 21 games last year in only a half season of closing. And we weren't exactly setting the world on fire in the win department in 2017.

if you are gonna trade one of the city's biggest stars, do it the day after a Steeler home playoff loss. Maybe when the Steelers announce Haley won't be back is when Josh Harrison is traded. Keep the blows to a minimum.

100 loss seasons are here again. In fairness, they were coming anyway, Cutch or no Cutch.

First Cole, now Cutch. Fire sale. 'Blue light special in the Pirate dugout.'

Football and baseball suck right now.

Thanks for making Pirates baseball something Cutch!

:(

Cole, now Cutch, followed shortly by Harrison. As soon as Bell is actually due some real money he will be traded away as well. Only a total ******* moron would believe the Pirates are actually trying to field a competitive team.

Pirates may not win 21 games this year. I hope they lose every ******* one. I hope Nutting chokes on his money roll.......

If Hurdle can somehow keep them from losing 100+ games he has to be manager of the year.

Nah they won't be that horrible. They will probably backslide some from last year mostly because of Cutch's offensive output. But he's also ranked as one of the worst centerfielders in the game, so maybe we pick up a few wins based off of defensive improvement there. And let's face it, Cole has been very mediocre the past two seasons. Literally league average in ERA and worse than league average in HR's allowed. They keys is going to be the additions of Colin Moran at 3rd and the addition of Austin Meadows in Center, whenever they decide to bring him up. The trade of Cutch makes me think they may give him a shot at cracking the roster right out of the gate. He struggled last year in AAA but he was also hurt for half the season.

The bullpen will be deep. The starters will be a big question mark. Outside of Nova and Tallion there are a lot of questions. Trevor Williams will probably be in there because he did well last year when given a chance. Realistically, the guy they got for Cole, Joe Musgrove didn't have a much different ERA as a starter than Cole the past two years.

Not sure why a closer is valuable to lock up if you aren't going to win many games.

As with most things Pirates, it had a lot to do with price. He is on the verge of being a star but he's not quite established as one just yet, so they hurried up and did it before his monetary requirements exploded. They definitely have a track record for that. They did it with Marte and Polonco also. So far that hasn't worked out too great with those two between PED's and injuries.

Josh Harrison was interviewed tonight and asked about his status with the team and about the possibility of being traded. His response was something to the effect of "Based on Andrew and Gerritt getting traded, it may be better for all involved if I'm traded as well, if the team doesn't plan on contending the next couple years." Ouch.

Wish he could have retired a Pirate but that wasn't in the cards. After seeing Bonilla, Bonds and VanSlyke among others from the early 90s walk, I'm glad they were able to get something for him. Much appreciative of the good memories and help in getting us a few playoff games. I had forgotten what it was like to scoreboard watch for 20+ years. Hope he has a chance to win the WS. .

I am surprised they didn't trade Rivero.

Have to wander how many times they will have the lead and actually need a closer the next 4 years lol.

And to think we actually thought they gave a **** about winning for a few years.

Silly us.
