Excellent look at the disruptive force the big man brings. Another article says he's likely to beat out McLendon by mid season

With Shazier, Tuitt, Archer and Bryant all showing flashes of greatness, and now a real live nose tackle to smash up our enemies between the guards, it may be time to start talking about the legendary 1974 draft. Obviously not from a Hall of Fame expectation, but the fact that we could well have 5 Pro Bowlers come out of it.

That is, barring injury.

Certainly looks to have the potential to be a very, very good draft. I think Bryant is going to be a huge factor this year when Ben is throwing him the ball and not Landry freaking Jones.

McCullers is a beast, unmovable with good instincts and a nose for the ball. Just needs the usual rookie grooming but is going to be a terror in the middle as he continues to be developed.

Whoaaaaaa down nelly, I think we give these guys some playing time before we compare to "&74" and the pro bowl. They are looking good, preseason and all, just lets let them get some REAL games under their belt. I'm all for equal or exceeding "74", but lets let it happen, before we anoint it happening.

Salute the natiomn

Do not see him starting this year if he makes the roster as the one article suggests.

I guess if the slight possibility somehow comes to light he can tell us I told yinz so.

But that cat is a little raw to be jumping up to first team. Hell he is still listed as a third teamer.

I believe they are taking a close look at him sure, but not ready to drink that 1st string kool aid just yet...........

The fact that he demands a double team based on size alone is huge no pun intended. Once he gets some consistency in staying low. Lookout.

The Steelers 1974 draft will never be matched.

I don't know Steeler AL, never say never. I do know that is would be a tremendous feat with a lot of luck. One of the things that help make that class so good, was the longevity with the same team team. This day and age, most players aren't around long enough. Salary, big pay day, injury to name a few. Part of why that class was so bright wasn't just the outstanding abilities, but their longevity and greatness of other members of that team. All elevating each other more and more. You are right, probably will never happen again, but if it does, lets HOPE its with the STEELERS.

Salute the nation

so you're saying our brain trust will make him one of our first cuts and try to sneak him onto the PS? sounds like something we would do.

The only one with pro bowl potential out the gate is shazier. I think tuitt and Archer will be significant contributers. I see McCullers and Bryant making the team but only seeing spot/situational duties and special teams.

If we ever match 1974 ill cut off my own arm and eat it with steak sauce.

If we match 74 I think you should try the no steak sauce challenge, would love to see it... But ain't gonna happen. I would be happy with 3-4 solid starters and a situational/ depth player or 2.

I hope the rookies do well, but every year we see that it takes time for them to play well consistently. I don't see them rolling through the league this year.

This might be one of the best rookies draft classes ever. I loved the draft from the get go. The only picks I might have gone a different route were out 5th of Shaq Richardson I would have went John Urschel. Our other 5th round pick in Wes Johnson I would have went McCullers or E.J. Gaines. Out 6th round pick of Zumwalt I wanted McCullers or Seantrel Henderson. And our 7th round pick I wanted Howard Jones who we got as an UDFA. So all in all I love this draft.

If I was to be critical of big Dan, I would say he has limited lateral movement. It's one thing to take up blockers, it's another entirely to maneuver them away or into the play to create space. That's McLendon's true problem - he has excellent pass rush but he doesn't reset offensive linemen - they maintain gap integrity and when he exits his gap on a pass rush they fill the space.

I would like to see Dan manipulate his blockers a little more - move the LOS towards the runner so the LBs can fill and make plays in the backfield.

Some, 'round here, might classify this as a "knee jerk" reaction or comment...

"...it may be time to start talking about the legendary 1974 draft..."

When Vader, Idio, TAS, etc. see this - you'd better put on helmet and armor...

I could be wrong, but I thought a lot of DLB plays were designed for limited push by the NT... Hampton often got little to no push against two linemen but also didnt give ground...Im not sure that is the biggest problem a NT can have.... I would be more worried about how he does if trapped out there vs a no huddle, pass first offense.. that scares me about bigger NTs all the time... ........ Mcclendon does do exactly what you say though... its just not great at all for us. He always seemed more of a DE to me.

He did a little more than that.

Mitchell talks a lot about pad level. When you get lower than your opponent you can dictate where he goes on the play. Watching McCullers college tape the one constant thing I saw was him getting high on his opponent. This guaranteed that while the o-linemen weren't going anywhere due to Dan's enormous strength, he wasn't either, which let the offense maneuver around him and make big plays. Watch his college tape. Almost every run play went wide around him for a big gainer because while he was taking up space the o line was still established, and the defensive players on the backside had to move around McCullers to make plays. The same is happening to him now.

When Hampton played, he was excellent in manipulating the LOS 1-2 yards on either side of him. He not only took up two blockers, he influenced them out of position, thereby disrupting the play by destroying the o lines spacing and gap integrity, letting backers leak in.

Wow, talk about differences of opinion. Pro Football Focus gave Big Dan the worst grade of any defensive player Sat while others I have read thought he had a good game ?

Actually, with Mitchell's coaching, he has become better at keeping low, maneuvering the linemen trying to block him and collapsing the pocket. This is shown (along with what happens when he doesn't stay low) in the Depot article cited earlier. The kid is a 6th round pick who from all accounts (Mitchell included) has progressed a little more rapidly than they anticipated. Howver, if you, I or anyone else expects him to play like Casey right away, we're all in for a big disappointment. Keeping in mind his draft position and the fact that he has progressed (again, according to his preseason film - not college, and his coaches) I'm pleasantly surprised with where he's at right now and could care less about what his college tape shows.
