Day 3 Steeler Picks

The fact he played under center a lot for THE Ohio State, is a big kid, and has a plus-arm are all valuable assets. Having 30+ starts for KSU and THE Ohio State helps as well. Playing in college football's biggest theater last year is another plus.

He is a 6th round pick because he had a terrible throwing day at the combine. Showed he has some mechanical issues since he was struggling to throw accurately on the move, had his feet in a poor position leading to the poor throws. I did not watch much college football last season so my take is pretty weak, but I did not see the poor mechanics vs. Notre Dame. He does like to throw to the first read and will hold the ball, waiting for that guy to get open rather than move on. Those are all coaching challenges.

Which scares me a bit. Where is Todd Haley today?

Howard reminds me of Landry Jones coming out... good arm, bad instincts, inconsistent mechanics.. still a good get as low as we got him...

Most Ohio State QBs suck in the NFL cause they just have too much talent around them... but honestly, as a potential backup qb type they often have lots of physical talents if you can spend the time developing them...
He probably isnt going to turn into a franchise dude, but he can be a solid one or two read guy...

Mechanics are almost always fixable, but that bad instincts label tends to doom guys to backup status, no matter how great the guys arm..

Shedeur Sanders threw for 4134 yards and 37 touchdowns. He rushed for negative 50 yards and scored 4 rushing touchdowns.

Will Howard threw for 4010 yards and 35 touchdowns. He rushed for 226 yards and scored 7 rushing touchdowns.

Shedeur Sanders is extremely accurate and led the nation in completion percentage at 74 percent. He is a pure pocket passer with great mechanics but lacks elite mobility. His ability to handle pressure and make quick reads will be key in the NFL.

Will Howard is a balanced quarterback with solid passing efficiency and the best rushing ability. His size at six foot four and 235 pounds makes him a durable option. His ability to operate in a structured offense gives him a strong NFL foundation.

Shedeur Sanders is the most polished passer.

Will Howard is a run first QB.

I copied the above. Thought it was interesting.

Sanders -50 yards and sacks are not talked about enough.
Howard wins a college championship and is MVP. Playing against top ranked teams.
Howard completion percentage was 73%. Yet all we hear about is Sanders 74%. Seriously.

just baffles me. We seen worse qb's go much earlier in years past. Kenny Picket NEVER looked as good as Will Howard.
I think they question Howard’s consistency in regards to accuracy despite his 70 plus percentage.

Then it is well he had this great roster around him.

He still had to navigate that roster and take it to great heights.

I like the prospect and love that they landed him late as that makes him a low risk draft pick.

Agreed...

That's why I had McCord ahead of him.

He performed very well with much less...and I though his arm strength was better.

Oh well..,,,,time will tell.....hope I am off on that .

Sawyer is big (6'4", 260 lbs.) and is going to be better at setting the edge and stuffing the run game than Herbig (240 lbs.). Somebody else noted that this draft - talented DT in Harmon, Sawyer, and Yahya Black - very clearly said, "No more getting run over."

Now about the 2 DL scheme ...

Sawyer could be Mike Vrabel part 2. Hopefully we aren’t dumb and let him go prematurely like we did with Vrabel.

It would have been nice to keep Vrabel, but at the time, the Steelers had both Jason Gildon and Joey Porter ahead of him playing at All-pro levels.

You cannot keep everyone.

Vrabel was probably more athletic than Sawyer, as I don't see Sawyer ever catching touchdowns on offense like Vrabel did with the Patriots.

Howard at 6’4 236 is nearly the same as Big Ben when drafted at 6’5 240.
Big Will?
The more I learn about this guy, the more I like it.
Hopefully someday he’ll be included among the list of players from Ohio schools that have been major contributors to the Steelers success.

Big Ben, J.Lambert, J. Harrison, Santonio Holmes, Heyward, Ryan Shazier. Jerry Osalvsky was pretty solid

Yahya is one of the drafts best run defenders.

This team is desperate to not look like folding little ******* again. That run D was shredded against the rats.

You can rotate Black in and he will help against those heavy run teams like the rats.

So is he gonna clap real hard and make Cam and Benton more stout when dippy deploys that 2DL set on 3rd/4th and short? Sorry had to

That’s my primary concern
A lotta wasted assets if dippy is married to 2DL sets, which by all accounts appears to be the situation

I wanted yayah. Just thought was a bit early

I’m glad we got them both, regardless of pick timing.

Yayha will get some snaps this season, I hope he developed and gains trust early in the season.

My biggest watch will be how they develop and how fast Howard will show some potential.

Salute the nation

PS
I hear what you’re saying Litos, thanks for all your great post(s) along the way.!!!

PSS

I’m having plain O’l thick cut peppered BACON and eggs (over easy by steaming), for breakfast.

Glad we picked Howard over Sanders.

Howard will be steady and mature. Sanders has too much media baggage which the Steelers don't need.

Goodness, with the Aaron Rodgers circus show we have enough on our plate.

Tomlin just views our edge/ Olbs as DEs... thats why for a year he listed Watt and Dupree as DEs on the official roster... we see a 2DL set ... he sees a 4/3 because his lbs in his preferred D seem to have been undersized ... and even when we had normal DEs on the field, the ILBs were always being used as Safeties...

i am hopeful the end of last season finally killed the lightweight D scheme... teams dont do that tiny wr, matriculate up the field stuff anymore... they at least sort of run these days again

We know that answer. But instead of Cam and Benton maybe it will be Cam and DH who is more of a force IMO. Scheme still blows but maybe it can help swapping players for situational ball.

sorry if someone posted this already, Howard didn’t do himself any favors by attending the combine. I give him credit for attending but his mechanics were bad and his ball didn’t have allot of zip to the sidelines and was inaccurate. Didn’t see his pro day which I’m sure had to be better.

I think he just had an off day for whatever reason. It happens. Just unfortunately for his wallet at an miss-opportune time.
