Dick LeBeau Out as Defensive Coordinator

which brings us back to the thread I created
who has the final say?

was it LeBeau on D decisions?
was it college scouts on their area of specialty?
was it Colbert?
was it Tomlin?

we need to get to the bottom of this and clear this up

we need answers !

I saw all through the season that Lebeau kept saying he would be back as long as they would have him. So, I think the word "resignation" is a bit misleading. Lebeau was fired. He's not here because they didn't want him back. Maybe Butler (who isn't under contract) refused to come back as the LB coach. Maybe they just wanted a fresh perspective. Maybe they thought he was slipping or too rigid in his thinking. Whatever it was, I believe that Lebeau was fired and they agreed that he could announce it as a "resignation" in order to avoid an Arians type of miscue. Lebeau is a stand up guy for agreeing to do it.

or Dick stepped down so Butler could take the defense over and give him his shot. While I hope this isn't the case because I personally want a clean sweep on defense as of now. It would make sense or so I believe it does.

Maybe Tomlin wants to go to the 4-3 and LeBeau felt it time to step down due to the direction MT wants to go. If the reports are correct that they expected him back and he resigned, something happened in Tomlin and LeBeau's meeting. Butler not being retained? Change of scheme? I've been hearing this caught the team off guard, so it will be interesting to hear what happened, if we ever will.

And 4 years ago, Lebeau suddenly forgot how to coach?
Dude is damn near 80 yrs old....when you're that old your decision making process becomes flawed...Dick is being stubborn... he needs to move on......it's the right decision.... and it's finally time to cut ties w Troy, Ike and Brett....James even....

We can't keep holding on to our past ...and.players or.coaches past their prime...

I think it's safe to say that lebeau became disgruntled. As to why we may never know. What i find odd is where are quotes from the organization? I have not seen anything from tomlin, rooney, colbert, or anyone. I woulf have thought someone would have at least said thank you....

This place is funny.....now folks want a congressional. investigation as to what happened w our 80 yr old def coordinator... this wasnt a breach in ******* national security or an overthrow of a standing government....

“I want to publicly thank Coach LeBeau for his many contributions to the Steelers organization over 16 seasons,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II. “He is one of the finest men who has ever been connected to the Steelers, and the NFL. His leadership has positively impacted so many players and other members of our staff. I will always be grateful for what he has taught us about the game of football and about life.”

they ****** Dick!

So apparently LeBeau was forced out by Tomlin/Rooney

He wanted to gout out with Tayor and Troy, and Haririson.

In a show of solidarity and respect James, alike and Troy should all retire this year.

Thoughts?

Tomlin released a statement yesterday thanking Lebeau

Troy should retire because I couldn't tell him and Jarvis apart. Both were running around making little to no plays.

Troy had a HOF career and I loved him as a player and he will be missed.

I just think his tread on his tires is worn. Time for him to retire IMO...........

Lebeau was not forced out according to this report

Dick LeBeau's resignation caught Steelers by surprise By Marc Sessler

Dick LeBeau has left the Steel City, but could the defensive wizard wind up coaching elsewhere next season?

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported on NFL GameDay Morning that LeBeau's resignation caught the Steelers by surprise, per sources involved in the situation.

While some in the organization were clear that LeBeau could stay as long as he wanted, the longtime coach thought it was time to go, Rapoport was told. It's believed that LeBeau, 77, wanted to depart alongside veterans such as cornerback Ike Taylor and safety Troy Polamalu, who are unlikely to be back with Pittsburgh in 2015.

The logical heir apparent for LeBeau is Keith Butler, who the Titans tried to hire away last offseason. The Steelers blocked the move, perhaps paving the way for Butler -- the team's long-tenured linebackers coach -- to take over Pittsburgh's coordinating duties.

As for LeBeau, his future remains in question. Rapoport noted that both the Titans and Cardinals have emerged as the most likely landing spots if the coach takes another job. With connections to Bruce Arians in Arizona and Ken Whisenhunt in Tennessee, a consulting gig -- if not a coaching role -- looms as the potential next step for the celebrated defensive play-caller.

Yeah, I'm calling BS on the Kumbaya spin the Steelers are putting on this.

There's no doubt in my mind Lebeau was fired, as if it was on his own terms, it would have been to actually retire, not look to go somewhere else.

He didn't get the official courtesy gesture that Arians did because Lebeau probably resisted being shown the door, while Arians did not.

Art2's fingers are probably all over this, given his involvement in the Arians/Haley transition.

Because most of what Ian says is true...

Dick isn't the type to call out the Steelers, not buying Rappaport's snort.

There was some stat that scrolled on the ESPN ticker this morning that our defense has been the best in points allowed, and perhaps yardage, since Dick's arrival.

Who's asking for a congressional investigation? What are you talking about?

Folks around here are gonna make of this what they want....injecting all.sorts of BS to fit a narrative.....

If the offense stunk we would want Haley canned.....our defense stunk, LeBeau resigns (he should have been.fired) and now folks are up in arms.... It was defense that kept this team from being 13-3 or better...

I thought Ben was holding the team back?

There will always be people /fans who resist change.

In this case a tribute to what Dick LeBeau meant and accomplished.

But little has been accomplished lately on the defensive side of the ball.

NFL and hell society is a what have you done for me lately type of mindset.

Let your production slide and not meet work standards and see how long you hold a job.

Just the nature of the game regardless if we like it or not.

The speculation has begun around here...bold assumptions..... leaps in judgement.... and now LeBeau is painted as a victim, and The team FO is villainized .....if you liked LeBeau, fine...I liked him.... but at 77 it was time....been past time...

Thank goodness he's gone so.I.don't have to.see anymore 10 yd cushions by the DBs....I'm not the only one who felt this way about 10 yd cushions....

I thought Ben was holding the team back?

Ben.has weaknesses......flaws.....while an exceptionally gifted passer he has flaws....we all know what those flaws are.....as proficient as he is with high completion pctgs between the 20's he seems to stall with red zone efficiency

Why am I repeating myself here, it's well known this red zone struggle w Ben.....you know this.....

Being skeptical of the official narrative does not equate to villainizing Rooney, Colbert and Tomlin.

The skepticism is justified, given the precedent set by Arians' "retirement."

Now with Lebeau, we potentially have the "resignation."

I agree with you on this, Blitz. I'm ready for a breath of fresh air for the defense, and yeah, Lebeau is waaaay up there in age, time to move on.
But hey, its a message board, so you know there's gonna be chatter as to the underlying root cause(s) for this move. Just enjoy the ride:)
