If the Steelers hire Butler, I don't think they'll expect him to run an identical system. Isn't that why you get rid of LeBeau in the first place?

Dick left for the lack of talent. He wasn't fired. He QUIT...He couldn't run his system here anymore. Butler was his student for what 12 or so years? Do you think he will change anything? What can he do better than Dick? If Dick can't make it work how do you expect Butler the student to?

Nope. A lot of posters on here says the reason Dick has struggled the last few years was because of the lack of talent. That he is still a great DC and still knows how to coach. That none of the blame falls on Dick's shoulders. If that is true. Then how do you expect his student to fix the same problem that Dick couldn't fix for 5 years?

Joey Porter will NOT be our new DC. Dick L. quit and no one outside of a few close to the man, know why he quit. Speculation is just that, speculation. We can all guess but highly doubtful the truth comes out for awhile. If Butler was to be the new HIRE, we'd hear about it soon, VERY soon, doubt that is going to happen. Tomlin is saying the "D" is what held them back. I see a new DC outside the organization. Some here have had some GREAT sugestions, I'll have to wait and see what the Rooney's do.

Joey Porter isn't even up to the level of position coach yet. He is a defensive assistant with LB's, meaning this is an introductory job in the NFL. There is no way in hell they would consider naming him the DC. He may be a LB at some point in the near future, but he has to work his way up the ladder to do that. This position he has now is basically his coaching internship to get his foot in the door.

I honestly think Dick stepped down for Butler to take over. Butler's contract is up and he himself probably figure now is the time to move forward. Whether in Pittsburgh or somewhere else. Dick knows Butler has bided his time here and stepped aside for him..Of course this is my twist on it. I prefer to go outside the organization for our new hire but if Butler can come in and do HIS own thing with major changes. Well who am i to argue that.

I'm pretty sure, that is what I meant when I said "Joey Porter will NOT be our new DC" ? No? Some on this board had mentioned Joey Porter as a possible replacement. I say no.

Yes I know that. I quoted you because you brought it up but my comments were directed at whoever said that because I didn't see them. The idea itself is completely ludicrous.
you give up 500 yards to the browns because you can't get to the qb, we have no pass rusher except a 37 year old LB and a DE, even our blitzers can't beat a damn rb.

The vaunted Steeler D got beat like a red-headed stepchild, by the backup QB that they cut; they simply ran a lot of mis-direction plays and the D couldn't respond in 6 freaking quarters. Unbelievably, it seemed like there was no capability to make adjustments to the scheme...not saying the talent level was at the level we've been spoiled to expect, but it was just crappy to see NFL players get abused like that. Clearly not all DL's fault -- maybe he is voting with his two feet?
That's why he quit, they didn't fire him, he left on his own, probably because he has been given **** to work with.
Close but he's seventy seven...
Everyone is citing this article like it is the gospel truth. I still remain skeptical.

I am not sure we are ever gonna know what happened, but I have a feeling this is a Tomlin thing. Now when I say that I am not looking to put blame of him or make this a hate Tomlin thread, but what I want to say is maybe Tomlin got tired of waiting for DL to retire so he could put his touch on the defense. We all know that MT was told when he was hired that the team had a DC and that was that. I feel MT just couldn't wait anymore and went to ownership and ask to have DL replaced and ownership put some pressure on DL. DL the class guy he is stepped down but with his statement made it known he was not retiring. Now with Butler's contract done and DL gone maybe we can MT put his mark on the defense....good or bad!
My other issue is before we blame DL for everything bad on this defense I want to know who was the brains(or lack there of) in drafting Jones? Also if MT is making the calls on draft guys then I am a little worried and if Colbert is the guy making the decisions then maybe a change there needs to be made. Our draft's has been pretty shaky and this is a big problem with this team, I am not so sure it is coaching or the game passing a person by.....jmo!

I think we need to hear from DL and the Steelers, all official-like, before we can infer what sequence of events really happened.
Why when we can just make up **** and blame whomever we want??
