Draft 2017 - deljzc

Damonte Kazee and Corn Elder are two fiery players who are comparable to Golson in size. No fear in tackling. I agree its a need. Dwayne Thomas out of LSU is another candidate that doesn't get a lot of love. Would love if any of those 3 were added to the roster. An outside corner and a slot corner, should be added in this draft and the two positions have definitely two distinct measurables and traits. The prospect list may narrow down who they are looking for in this draft and if they think Sensabaugh fills the need at slot CB adequately.

yeah I think one outside and one inside is needed....

but so is a TE/RB/OLB/ILB/QB/ and WR

lot of needs perhaps more needs than picks available

BPA and fill a free agent or two with the left over perceived weaknesses.
 
So I might as well keep my thread alive between now and draft to bring some rumors I read about around the internet.

1. Jonathan Allen might have a degenerative shoulder(s) that are/will eventually become arthritic. He had surgery on both shoulders in college that seem to increase the pace at which his shoulders will deteriorate more than normal OL/DL prospects. If Allen does fall all signs continue to point to Solomon Thomas as the main beneficiary.

2. The CB rankings are all over the place (but in a good way). For the most part, this is the best CB/DB class I (and many others) have seen but there continues to be movers and shakers inside the group. The rise of Obi Melifonwu is eerily similar to Byron Jones from a couple of years ago when he ended up rising all the way into the back end of the 1st round. That could happen again. Another "hot" name right now is Gareon Conley, who I have always liked since watching film on him but is starting to get 1st round buzz. The fallers of the group (though not that far) are Tre'Davious White, Sidney Jones and Teez Tabor. Other risers are Kevin King, Chidobe Awuzie and Fabian Moreau. The whole group is just so good with literally 15 guys that could be taken in round 2 and not surprise me at this point.

3. The off-field stuff continues to cloud the following prospects. Despite the film of him striking a woman, Mixon seems "on the rise" right now and likely won't make it past day 2 (rounds 2 & 3). In fact, I think he goes in round 2. Tim Williams and his positive drug tests are still a big red flag. And while Mixon seems to have settled into his draft spot, a domestic assault accusation hangs over Jourdan Lewis right now and some are suspecting he falls (particularly in such a deep CB draft).

4. The top of the offensive line group is terrible. I have seen each of the potential #1 offensive lineman taken mocked in round 2. That's almost unheard of in any normal draft. Not to say these guys aren't potentially good starters, but it just shows how uninspiring this group is. One riser right now is Taylor Moton, the small school tackle from Western Michigan. I looked at him as a RT-only type guy but there are rumors he could be better than that. He is inching into clear round 2 talk now. The small-school and non big school talent in the offensive line group is weird. If I told you out of the top-10 offensive line drafted they could include Utah, Western Kentucky, Pitt, Indiana, Temple, Western Michigan, San Diego State and Troy you'd look at me funny in most years, but that is exactly what could happen.

With the Rice fiasco and all the stop the DV stuff we've seen the nfl push, mixon rising seems odd.
 
I hope they stay away from Mixon. If they are going to take a problem child with baggage, take Williams in Rd. 1.
 
D'Onta Foreman at 233lbs ran a 4.45 forth at his pro day. Big man can move.
 
Foreman looks like a beast and I think the Steelers were interested in him but with those numbers, I doubt he will be there in rounds 3 and after. We have several more pressing needs than a backup RB.

Also, Mike Williams is one of the top WR's in the draft. Why? The dude has a history of dropping the damn ball. I don't want any WR unless they have big hands and sticky fingers. Bryant, Coates, etc. drop the ball enough for the entire team.
 
Interestingly, NFL draft tracker has Kevin King as the 16th or 17th ranked CB. Kayzee is 1 behind him. I see some mocks with King going late first or in the second. Kayzee, not so much.
 
I'm thinking that we should trade up in rd 2 using our 4th, and maybe a 6th. Getting that 3rd round comp pick should help us maneuver a bit. I also would have no issues trading down 2-3 spots, then trading back up for a guy we like. Trade with Browns to nab Lawson, then trade up for a corner in rd 2.

Rd 1 corner, trade up in rd for edge (Lawson/Watt)
or
Rd 1 Edge, trade up in rd 2 for corner ( Tabor, someone else)

Apparently, you can now trade comp picks, which might also be helpful in moving up.
 
I'm not really in favor of trading. We probably have 4 big holes on the roster right now - OLB, ILB, CB & RB. I could also argue the last guy on the depth chart at TE, WR, S, DL and QB could be upgraded by a draft choice as well.

Not sure I want to give away a pick to move up. I think the talent will be on the board if you just draft correctly.
 
I would like to slide back a little.
 
The Fo doesn't consider ILB a huge hole. rd 1 and 2 will be edge/CB, or other way around. Rd 3 will prob be wr and rb. If we trade back with the Browns we would get their 3rd rounder. We could use our 4th rounder to move up from #30 in rd 2 and snag a player we really like.

In this scenario we would have 3 3rd rounder's and 2 2nd rounder's, but no 4th, and 6th (trade up ammo). A good draft to have those picks.

Teez Tabor runs 4.77 forty at pro day. He might be around in the 7th for the Steelers now. Honestly, how he plays off the ball and his understanding of zone defense I would be ok with taking him but not until the way later rounds.

I am debating now that I have enough time to create a Steelers-Specific Big Board.

Since most of my heavy lifting and overall board are done, I'm kind of twiddling my thumbs a bit this last month so this will be the first year I attempt to do something specific for one team based on needs, style of play, etc.

Should be an interesting exercise.
