We are officially 1 year away from the national election and I thought I'd start this and see if it sticks.
There was an election in Phoenix today to vote up or down on 3/4 of a BILLION dollars in bonds. I received a ballot in the mail that I don't recall ever requesting but failed to get it in the mail in time to be counted, so I thought I would just drive a few miles to my local polling place.
When I moved to Phoenix in the early 80's I built my house on the extreme northern limits of the city, now it's just north Phoenix. I drove the less than 2 miles to the poll at the Lutheran church and found numerous cars in the parking lot and people milling around outside. As I approached the door, I saw a sign that said no voting today. A man reiterated the message to me and said the nearest polling place was 6 miles further south. At first, I thought the hell with it, but then decided differently, because in a city that encompasses 520 square miles, there had to be some place closer. Well, I was wrong, so I drove the extra miles and voted.
Then I looked at my phone and discovered that the 5th largest city in the US of A only had a total of only 10 polling places open today. I hopped in my 26-year-old truck and began the 120-mile drive north to my cabin. Just for giggles, I measured the distance from that northern most polling place to the northern edge of the city and found that it would be 23 miles for those folks that would choose to vote in person today.
The critical thinker kicks in and asks who would benefit from a low election day turn out? Hmmm? Shirley, it can't be the Democrat mayor and city council that have been extolling the benefits to all if we only pass the bonds, resulting in better fire, police, EMT protection and of course infrastructure! Earlier ads mentioned water conservation, climate change and equity, but for some reason they weren't mentioned as the election grew closer.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but you would have to be naive to believe that those in power can't sway an election outcome.
So, anyone else have an election today?
