i can see why - there are only 32 starting quarterbacks in the NFL. From the same era, you have Brady, Peyton Manning, Roethlisberger and Rodgers all definitely ahead of Eli, and Brees is probably also ahead of Eli. Then there's Philip Rivers and Russell Wilson to consider. Being number six at the position places him outside the top 15% of players at his position, being seventh best, places him outside top 20%, and even being 5th best places him marginally outside top 15%.
Hall of Fame should be for the best of the best. Once you start putting players who weren't in the top 15% at their position in the Hall, to me it is no longer the hall of fame, but the hall of very good.
And looking to the next few years - next year Brees and Rivers will be eligible, then Roethlisberger the following year, and Brady the year after that.
Ok hang on now...You can make your arguments for the first list of guys, but when you get to Rivers and Wilson...that's where I'm gonna say no. Just with Wilson alone. It's a well known fact that Eli played behind some of the worst offensive lines, hell the Giants STILL haven't fixed their OL. But when you really start digging, and looking at stats for both Eli and Wilson, you start to see things. Example, the most yards Wilson ever threw for, 4,219. In fact, in his 13 year career, he's only thrown for over 4,000 yards 4 times. Eli did it 7 times and just missed 5,000 yards by 67 yards in 2011. His TD/INT ratio is impressive, but then you can easily see why when you look at his sacks. Eli's highest sacked season was 2018, he was sacked 47 times. Until that season, he had never been sacked more than 39 times in a season and only over 30 times 3 times. So Eli didn't eat the ball and take sacks, he was more of a risk taker. Wilson on the other hand, has never been sacked LESS than 33 times (including this year when he played 11 games), been sacked over 50 times in a season twice, and over 40 times 8 times. Wilson has 3 less seasons than Eli and has been sacked 149 times more.
I think Eli catches a lot of strays due to his last name. I mean you look at Drew Brees, he threw for a lot of yards, and his completion % is high, but until the last four years of his career, he threw a lot of interceptions as well. He played on some bad teams too. It's not like the Giants were ever truly loaded, not like the SD teams that Rivers was on that could never win anything. First ballot, maybe not, but lets not get crazy talking about him like he was trash. Playoff Eli was a different QB, especially their two SB runs. His 2011 were incredible. 4 games, 65% 1,219 yards, 7.5ypa 9 TD 1 INT, 103.3 rating, in the playoffs, when it mattered most.
