Today on 93.7 The Fan out of Pittsburgh, radio host Andrew Fillipponi went on record claiming that the Steelers have interest in Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ cornerback Carlton Davis, and safety Jordan Whitehead. Whitehead is a former Pitt standout, and fan favorite during his time in college.
Now Davis would be an intriguing signing for the Steelers. We’ve linked the Steelers to a few cornerbacks that will become free agents like JC Jackson, Donte Jackson, and Darious Williams, but Davis’ name has stayed off the radar until now. Pro Football Focus ranks Davis as the third best available corner, and the 16th best free agent overall. The Bucs’ decided to put the franchise tag on wide receiver Chris Godwin, instead of Davis and let him test the free agent market. Davis is a big, fast, young corner that can play man to man, as well as come up and play the run.
It’s expected that Davis will command upwards of 17 million dollars per year on the open market.
Fillipponi stated that the Steelers want to re-sign Terrell Edmunds even though they didn’t pick up his 5th year option last May. Edmunds has made progress every season, but never lived up to the first round selection by the Steelers. Edmunds has tools, but isn’t exactly a ‘playmaker’ in the secondary. Now if Edmunds decides to go else where next week, Fillipponi states the the Steelers will be in on Whitehead.
Whitehead ranks as the sixth best safety available, and 70th overall free agent according to Pro Football Focus. Edmund’s didn’t make the top 10 in these rankings. Whitehead is on the shorter side at 5-11, but is physical at 200 pounds. He can bring the hammer, and isn’t afraid to get down into the box. He’s projected to get a three year contract worth around 6 million per season.
With free agencies tamper period one week away, expect the rumors and ‘sources’ to start flying. Buckle up, cause it’s about to get even crazier.
