Draft 1 was the best skill position available on the board. Idea was to simply add as many playmakers to the team as possible. The first three picks add a ton of speed to the offense, true home run threats. Toney could potentially be a stud in Canada's offense.

Draft 2 was focused on the building the lines and ground game. I had to stray from the plan because of the lack of talent available.

In running a number of mocks, I have learned that the draft is deep in OT, G, not nearly as much for CB, DT. At pick 24, the Steelers need to upgrade their offense - by a lot. The end of the year, the team could not sustain drives, could not convert 3rd and 1, was reduced to crossing patterns and immediate release passing because the pass blocking deteriorated, could not run the ball, could not run block.

The depth at OT, however, means they can get a legitimate starter in the 2nd round. So where go with the first round pick? If Kyle Trask is there, freaking take him. The knock on him is mobility, and yeah, he was sacked a few times, but nobody with eyes can question he is vastly more mobile than Ben right now. Also, he is a big QB, good arm, accurate, very good deep ball. Steelers will not have a chance at a QB this good until they go 5-11 once again. Why wait?

Then get a quality OT at pick 55. I don't think Mayfield is still there, but a ton of mocks have him available. He manhandled Chase Young in 2019, is a quality LT.

Go interior OL in the 3rd, TE 4th. Use the comp 4th round pick for ILB.

Guess it depends on the Steelers take on Trask. I went round and round with the prospect. I [emoji848] think his value is round 2. But I could see the case for him in 1. One unique trait on him is he seems to make those around him better. The mobility is a concern though as BigBen was more mobile out of the gates. But if he can slide in the pocket enough to make plays that can be just as effective. Definitely a big boom or bust prospect.

I cannot disagree with a thing you said about him. Watching him drop deep balls into a bucket against Alabama convinced me he is a better NFL prospect than a lot of guys rated higher.



Look at the throws at 0:09, 1:08, 2:01, 2:35, 2:45, 3:02 and 3:37. Most times he slid up in the pocket to get room and then delivered the ball 20-40 yards downfield on target. No, more than "on target" - he gave the receiver a perfect pass. He makes NFL throws - the receivers are not wide open, and he finds the spot where the defender has no chance, his receiver gets a great ball to catch.
 
My kid goes to Florida so I had to start watching Gator games. I like Trask...menza menz. He reminds me of a Bigger, stronger armed version of Andy Dalton, in that there are some awkward moments and movements. I don't think he has top-notch football instincts but I think he could be very good in the right system.

Some of those prospects are more potential than production. We know sometimes they work out and sometimes they don't. Not sure if Trask is any better than Cousins at his peak. But some will say Cousins has his moments. And let's face it some prospects just outshine what you project. Those are the ones that get with good coaching and minimize or eliminate their concerns. Both Dot and Claypool are good examples of that. And good examples of pro scouts being able to see that potential. Steelers at certain positions can lay that claim. Rudy hasn't bombed out so I won't say the Steelers can't develop QB talent. And has spots were he played well. With Ben arguably on his last season if Trask is viewed in their eyes of having that possible franchise ceiling how do you not make that pick? I love the draft but man some harder draft decisions this year for the team. Glad I don't have to make them.

The combine will underscore some of that "awkwardness," I suspect. At least I hope so. If the guy runs a 4.75 and shows stellar accuracy, he is never going to make it to the Steelers' pick.

Good thing is if there is a run on QBs a T or pass rusher will probably be there to scoop up of good value.
 
I think the Steelers will go LT first round just because of the depth and the quality that will be there at 24. Jalen Mayfield is arguably the third best pure LT prospect, behind only Sewell and Darisaw. (I think Slater winds up at C.) In the second, I would not be disappointed to see the team take NC RB Javonte Williams. Good size back, 5'11", 220 lbs. Great burst and vision.

Here is Meinerz at Senior Bowl drills against Patrick Jones, 6'5", 260 lbs. from Pitt who posted 17.5 sacks the past two seasons, including Trevor Lawrence last season:

Love the talent. Only worry - and a real one - involves Dickerson's injury history. Too many knee and ankle injuries and games missed due to those injuries to make me comfortable using a 2nd round pick on him.
 
IMO, before you draft Trask or Mac Wilson, you have to look ahead to also next year - would we be able to get a better QB in 2021? if so, you hold on taking a QB.
