Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger: Kenny Pickett

Will have to catch it tomorrow night. Getting late here and morning responsibilities are creeping up fast.

Thanks for posting it ianv2012..!!!

Salute the nation

“I’ll be completely honest, and I’ll be super transparent here… I wouldn’t say that I wanted Kenny to necessarily fail, but when someone comes to replace you, you know, I still feel like I had it, I’m like, 'I hope he doesn’t come [and] like ball out, cause then it’s like, Ben who,' right?”

“Early on, I didn’t want him to succeed, cause he followed me up, I didn’t want it to happen. I think that’s probably the selfishness of me and I feel bad for it, but as it went on – as the season went on – he got to his third game playing, I was rooting for him. I was excited for you, and I wanted you to succeed, I wanted you to win games, I wanted you to get to the playoffs.”

This is what I suspected all along stemming from when he openly stated his refusal to mentor newly drafted QB Rudolph.

I do give Ben credit for manning up and admitting it.

Yeah I think everyone kinda feels that way at btheir replacement.

Well said Blitz, I know when I moved to another position at work and when I retired, I'd keep tabs on my replacement. Was I as good as I thought I was or JAG. That includes hoping the new guy fell on his face, reflection and age softened that view but we all have an ego and want to be remembered as integral.

I know Ben will never be remembered as just another QB but he cares deepley about his legacy as he should.

So I see a lot of clickbait headlines about Big Ben's podcast. When I really look at the full context of what he says, it's refreshingly honest without shredding people. Yeah he didn't want KP to come out and shred the league. That's called human nature. Once he realized yeah this is it I'm really done.....he became a fan. I feel like you can manufacture a self for short media bits. A more than an hour podcast.......I think that is a pretty good look at the real Ben Roethlisberger.

Ben chose to look at himself and see error. He then chose humility to correct it. Sounds like a great guy to me.

We could use a lot more of this in this messed up world we live in.

I don't get it. I am lucky and enjoy what I do for a living. But when I retire I'm not going to be worrying about what is going on where I worked. Granted, I will retire by choice and with some of the comments Ben has made it seems as if his retirement wasn't entirely his choice.

And you aren't a world class QB playing a HIGHLY competitive sport. Show me a guy like this who wouldn't feel like this in Ben's situation and I will show you a loser. Big ego comes with this territory.

Shame it took Terry so long to do the same thing. (If he even has)

Yeah, I know, and you are right. It is what makes them special. It is also what makes them a pain in the ***.

Great point about Terry who had won 4 SBs and was already in Hall of Fame. He basically resented Ben his whole career. Maybe that's what snapped Ben out if it. Didn't want to be bitter Terry.
He did? He rightfully pointed out Ben should stay the hell off the bike, Ben got a pisser on...and Terry was proven right. He had some harsh words for Ben after the Georgia thing. Whatever happened there, Ben needed that. I not sure he resented Ben's success, though.

Man BB is so much bigger. Makes Kenny look like south park Kenny.

Terry and Ben didn't have a relationship which I cannot blame just on Terry. And Terry only wants to blame Ben's early days for it. You can tell from this that Ben is trying to do it differently.

I’m wondering what Jojo Starbuck would say about Terry in his early days

I'm not trying to be argumentative, I am just asking this generally. Why is it important that they have a relationship? This relationship thing never came up with any other QB since Bradshaw retired, why is it a thing with Ben?

I think you are absolutely right about the personalities of these kind of guys. Part of the reason for their success is their peckish personalities. I don't think they ever could really have a relationship. If Kenny has that kind of a personality, he and Ben probably won't have much of one either. At the end of the day, does it matter?

I don't think it's Important that they have a relationship but part of the Steelers mystic is the past to the present. You don't want guys talking **** about the present team. It's also different with Terry being in the media. You aren't going to see Cowher saying stuff about Steelers players.

Like Bleyer, Clark, Bettis, Ward, and probably others have in recent years?

I think Ben is going to be a great mentor to Kenny. Looking forward to seeing this unfold

I don't think it's a good look no matter who does it. Now if you are paid to have an opinion you can't just tow the company line all the time either I get it. It just always seemed personal with Terry. And let's be honest it wasn't just Ben it was the organization as a whole. There were a lot of chilly years.

Terry is a clown. I'll never forget the day he ignored the Steelers fans chanting his name at Super Bowl XLV when the rest of the FOX crew acknowledged the crowd.
