Free Agency Rumors and News

I can recall some Steelers fans - not many, and nobody on this forum that I can recall, but some - saying two things this time last year:
  • Trade for Aaron Rodgers!
  • Don't draft Pickett - he's already 24 years old!
Yes, I remember.
I wanted AR sure at that time. Pickett did have that extra year concern but for me more about the one year of good production and less about age.

😉

Pepperidge farms makes a good swirl bread. Pumpernickel and Jewish rye.

I didn't want Rodgers, Wilson, or any QB on the back end of their career that we would have to spend major draft capital and major cap space. It just didn't make sense. I would have been fine with Trubisky for a year or two but we drafted KP.

That is another way of saying - and I agree with you - that the Steelers should draft their next QB, not pay for a FA or trade for an established QB.

Drafting a good/great QB gets 5 years well below market value, allowing the team to build around the QB. It is NOT a coincidence that the Steelers best years under Ben were in his first 7 seasons.

Just read the Packers require a 1st round pick plus additional compensation if A-A-Ron plays past 2023. LOL. This delusion reminds me of the Jimmy G fiasco last year. All the homer '9ers fans kept thinking he was worth trading for. I said from the start no one wants Jimmy G. No one. He ended up taking a pay cut to stay. Now I do think Rodger has SOME trade value. But not a lot. If you are lucky you are going to get 70% of what he was in his prime for 2 years. If you are lucky. Now there's teams that are close that might be a QB away who will be willing to make that happen but not for a first round pick. They are just too valuable. Here are my potential landing spots for A-Aron.

Dolphins- There's been talk about Brady coming out of retirement to go there but if Rodgers was to be had for a 2023 3rd round pick (Phins have 2) an a 2024 4th I could see this happening. Tua is a concussion away from answering the door when someone calls him. They have a phenomenal supporting cast, good defense, and who wouldn't prefer playing in Miami in December vs Green Bay.

Jets- We all know Rodgers likes following in Favre's footsteps so here he goes. Personally, I think this is less likely because they are more than a QB away. It could happen if Rodgers is part of several moves they make this offseason. There's no way they give up #13 pick for him though. But their 3rd round pick is ahead of the Phins and they have more 2023 picks to entice the pack with multiple picks if need be.

Ravens- Rats could lose Action Jackson and get an additional 2023 and 2024 1st round pick. I don't see them giving up as much as the Phins or Jets might be willing to. But if the Phins decide to ride out Tua and Jets decide to ride out the MILF Hunter I could see the Ravens getting involved at a bargain rate. They likely don't offer more than a 4th and then draft a QB to sit a season behind Rodgers. They likely only rent Rodgers and he'd be free to sign elsewhere after they release him after 2023.

Rodgers was not getting us to the SB. So why bring him in? ....vs what we would have had to give up for him. In fact. I think Rodgers is one of the most overrated QB out there ever.

We can say that about pretty much every free agent available. This team isn't close. But before Pickett was picked he was the best available free agent QB IMO. I have always liked AR's ability. (shrugs)

The other important thing is you aren’t getting a guy who the league already has a book on, and who potentially is all beat up with wear and tear… players in their first six or seven years are playing with their athletic abilities… if they survive longer it’s usually on their mental abilities …

Its the basis for Dan Rooney stopping the team from trading for older vets in the 70’s and building through the draft… don’t get other teams used trash … sure there are exceptions like Bettis or Mincah… but not 40 year old qbs that cost a first or more

It would have been awesome bringing in Rodgers and having Mr. Canada handcuffing him. No audibles. Ten plays in our hurry up offense. :)

I think they will start with cuts. They could then mess with TJ's cap hit if need be. I have heard nothing though outside of speculation.

He was surrounded by a great roster that Cowher had built and great coordinators. HCMT had not yet trashed the team and its brand.

Big fat truth sandwich. Steady decline in championship culture. I keep a sliver of hope I see something new this year that resembles the old. I won't hold my breath.
