If you miss football season, watch this game. Neil O'Donnell was banged up, Mike Tomczak got the start, and, amazingly, out-dueled Dan Marino. The fourth quarter is when things got really interesting, the game went to overtime, and the Steelers won. Jim Lampley and Todd Christensen did an outstanding job with the game call. You will enjoy watching this.

is it just me, or is the Steelers logo on the helmet, tilted up at a slight angle back in those days? and it seems like the helmet logo is bigger than it is now

Take a close look at the Steelers evolution of helmets when you get a chance. The one obvious notable when you look is how the helmets changed in shape and appearance. The different shape will have the logo looking different in its angle. Not sure if they changed the logo size but the mentioned could be the explanation for what you are seeing.

It was definitely a different game back then. It was rare to see a pass that was not more than 10 yards downfield.

I was like "Where is Yancy!" and then I see that he's in street clothes at the end. Tomczak might be the greatest NFL backup QB in league history. :)

NO my friend, Ben ROETHLISBERGER was the GREATEST back up QB in league history. As a "backup" QB, he went 13-0 in regular season play and those were consecutive games. Maddox got hurt so BEN replaced him and the rest is history. I know at what point was he the starter and NOT a back up............................... Bottom line he was a backup to begin with.

We give a lot of grief to Tomlin. And rightfully so IMHO. But watch a series of the defense in this game. Look at the names. How do you not win a SB with that? I realize the QB situation and all. But ****, The Ravens won a SB with no better defense and a complete stiff at QB. Lloyd, Brown, Kirkland, Steed, Greene, Lake, Woodson, Perry, Figures. Like what do you need. They should have given up nearly nothing. and they had Foster and Williams in the backfield and a couple receivers in Hastings and Johnson that should have made you pay. Unbelievable.

A QB when the game is on the line can throw to an open WR instead of a spot the receiver should have or shouldn't have been but where a scrub CB is there to get a rich contract as result.

Steelers had momentum tilting in their favor then O'Dumbell blew it.

Feels like yesterday ..........thanks for reminding me Slash.........downer

Perry and Lake were a solid combo. I forgot how hard Lake hit. He wouldn’t be allowed to play his way by today’s rules.

The Ravens did it, but they knocked Rich Gannon out of the AFCC game in Oakland early and dominated a mediocre Giants team in the Superbowl.

Cowher got those Steelers teams to the door a few times, nearly upsetting the Cowboys in one of them.

The AFCC loss to the Chargers was bad, but they were not going to beat that 49ers team in the Superbowl.

The same thing in 1997, as I highly doubt they would have beaten the Packers with Kordell.

It's possible to win a Superbowl with subpar QB play, but there's a reason it's been done only a few times in history.

Two things watching this...

1. This game was the poster child for instant replay and coaches' challenges. The refs blew several big calls like Mills catch that wasn't a catch on the sideline, the Dolphins' 3rd down conversion catch in OT that hit the ground, and the biggest blunder... Marino's fumble in OT that the Steelers recovered and ran back for a TD that was ruled down by contact.

2. Those of you talking about the helmet logo earlier... this video reminded me that the helmet stripe used to be more of a dark mustard yellow....slightly darker than the shade of gold used on the pants and jersey stripes.

I'm not counting Ben's ROOKIE season where he was a backup all of 3 games. Tomczak was a true backup QB for years. He could come off of the bench cold and just take over or be ready to start like he did in the Dolphins game. Over 400 yards passing in that game.

Which is why I say if Ben is injured or cannot play, do not try to save next season. Play with what you got and live with it. You need the next guy. But still that should have been a generational defense (Two HOF players, 5 perennial probowl/ all pro types.) Perry was solid. I think Figures was solid. The 3/4 DE's were nothing I remember. But with Kirkland and Brown behind that shouldn't have mattered. And with Foster, JL Williams, Eric Greene, Hastings, Johnson on offense. It wasn't like O'Donnell was just trash either. He was a solid game manager. With a running game and a monster tight end, that should have been enough. The Cowboys had a dynasty at that time, but it wasn't like Aikman was the Goat or anything. Same with SF. Young was not a generational player either. You say they would have lost to SF. Why? You should have been able to lock up Woodson on Rice and at least slow him. So you would have had to handle Taylor and the TE. The front 7 should have been able to handle the run game. Those teams under performed. There is simply no other way to put it.

I think you are not remembering things exactly right. Green didn't play in the Dallas SB. Morris was a 2nd year player and wasn't even the starting RB Pegram was the starter. Morris was also hurt during the year. Charles Johnson was a rookie that year. Figures started 1 game that year. I think he was benched.

Most of the players you listed either didn't play in those years together or were rookies during those years. Cowher had a lot of good players but he was a new coach and by the Dallas game had already had several key departures.

Also player for player the Cowboys were dominant that year. They had more than a couple HOF potential players. Aikman, Smith, Irvin, Haley, Johnson, Novacek, Sanders, Johnston, Darren Woodson, Maryland, and Larry Allen. There is no way the Steelers stacked up to that. None. The Steelers had some up and comers but no veteran HOF players outside of maybe Woodson (who was hurt).

The Charger game was a disaster. No reason to lose that game. One defensive play killed it.

Some notice the Steelers logo? What I notice is the cartoon-sized shoulder pads. Even WR's had those massive shoulder pads. Surprised the players could make it through the door to the locker room wearing those things.

Ah Figures been awhile since I heard that name. I think he was benched once for being late or missing a meeting? He was in trouble for something but my brain is coming up short. Anyways he was definitely a what could have been with that gunshot wound screwing with his career. One of our Colorado boys...he is lucky to be alive for what he had to deal with....

I'm not going to say exactly right. But everyone I said was in that video. That is a completely stacked defense. Pretty hard to come up with a better four linebackers than Lloyd, Green, Brown and Kirkland. Then a great back end behind with two all pros and a solid second safety.

The Steelers simply would not have been able to score enough points to keep up with the 49ers back in '94, they were way too explosive. But it would've been fun to watch for maybe a half or so.

good eye.

and seriously, the dolphins absolutely need to go back to these uniforms. what they wear now is utterly ridiculous

lol so true. nowadays guys are wearing the tiniest pads they can muster, with some of them, like michael bennett, taking it to the extreme

For a league that can tell you how high you have to wear your socks, how do they let that continue. I've fit hundreds and hundreds of shoulder pads on kids. How does that meet minimum safety standards.
