I know this is kind of a weird thread, but do any of you ever wonder exactly why it is that we as STEELER fans, or diehard fans of any pro sports team, care so much that a bunch of men we don't know from a load of coal are successful or not? I was elated after yesterday's big win, and it just got me thinking... Why do I care so much about this? If I had to put my finger on it, I'd say it goes back to my childhood I guess...

Probably some pack instinct left in our brains from when humans first started walking upright. We want our group of monkeys to get the most food, best trees and most fertile females.

I typically associate it with youth and not having a whole lot else to do.

Once those two things start fading, then you don't get so wrapped up in it.

Hard to say, but I only care for Steelers and Irish football games anymore. Any other game or sport just doesn't hold my interest. Growing up in central PA in the 70s probably has a lot to do with it.

A childhood 70's thing for me i figure. I was bored off my *** living on a small farm outside of Kittanning,PA. We could get the Steelers on our 15 foot high antenna though. The 70's are also a reason i hate what the game is evolving into with all of the fantasy crap let's group hug after the game bs.

For me, It's support of the city. The players are playing to represent the city you live in or around. There is a sense of elation or pride in one's city when they succeed, and a sense of failure when they lose. It's because I identify with the city. I'm sure many here do as well. For those who never lived in the city, their parents may identify with Pittsburgh the same way, and that pride was passed on.

Interesting thought though RRR.

Use to be the fans felt pride for themselves as a team won. We always felt it was a victory for the area you lived in. With all the free agency and running to the money that part as lost its luster.

This is it. But I think its not the case anymore, or at least here in Southern Indiana. Here it should be Colts and Bengals all around but you really see a variety of teams. I guess part of it is because both teams are about 100 miles away.

It brings your community together around a common interest. High school football does the same thing, at least in western PA.

I dont know...Im pretty freaking old and I still get way to wrapped up in it...I will admit when I was younger I used to be wrapped up into more sports Baseball, Hockey, BB and those have faded ..but I dont think I will ever lose the urge for football ..I just love the sport too much and even with the changes to the game brought on by Rog it still something I would rather watch than not...but to each his own

I freely admit that the way the game is played and officiated now have damaged my passion for it. I still love football, as evidenced by my increased viewership on Saturdays now. They at least let them play defense some still.

Born and raised in Florida. First game I ever saw was Rams and Steelers in the super bowl, I asked my dad *rest in peace* what he was watching he said super bowl it's the LA Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers. I was obsessed with the name Steelers so I rooted for them, of course we won, hence been a fan since! And yes 01-20 is my birthday, day we won it 01-20-1980. Enough said. Go STEELERS!!!

For me it's about pride in being from Pittsburgh. I say that because my family goes back about 4-5 generations in Pittsburgh and my parents were one of the first in our family (in the mid 60's) to leave the city. Of course jobs were scarce then and there was a war my dad went to. My dad ended up moving around with ALCOA which ended us up in the New York area. That ended quickly as they couldn't stand it there. But one of my earliest memories was coming down the stairs one night in the mid 70's and hearing my parents cheer for the Steelers winning a superbowl, my dad actually saw me, picked me up and told me what was happening. I'll never forget it.
That's why I cheer for them, city pride, family pride.

All I know is this. I visited Pittsburgh for the first time in my life at the end of Sept. Myself and my oldest son must have said at least twice a day, "I feel as though I'm at home,"
For me some of the heartbreak of the 90's and early 2000's was relieved so heavily by the last 2 Super Bowls, the passion is now so deep that me and the oldest just watch games alone now. I don't even bother trying to be social anymore because everyone would think I'm insane. Its like friggen taking a giant Deuce every game. Its more relief than joy when they win. At times I honestly think it might be detrimental to my health, but I don't know how I could quit watching.

I'll poise another question, and kudos for this interesting thread...

"Why is it that "fans" of a team, regardless of who that team is, use the term "we" when speaking about the team???

It's a way to ASSOCIATE themselves into the team. They acquire such a Comroterie with the team, they kinda feel like a part of the team. That said, it shows, for some, they have passion for that team.. It doesn't need a reason or explanation, just a feeling of possession. I BELONG HERE. I refer, on occasion, exactly that, we / our / my / team. I realize II have absolute zero with the team, other than the money a fan spends. I met Bill Cowher once, I was the last in line and I told him where I was from (long ways away). He talked to me for about 45 minutes and genuinely wanted my input. I gave him my perceptions and we talked about other things than football. He was a VERY sincere person and his family were super duper. They made me feel very welcomed, not just as a fan, but also as a little part of the family / team. Coach Cowher took me inside and got a guy to give me an on field tour of three rivers, before Coach left. I was very amazed and still have my picture of him and I together, proudly displayed on my office wall. THANK YOU COACH, i was before, but after this visit I was entrenched deeper, as a FAN FOR LIFE.

Because we live vicariously through them. The hitting, the violence, the skill, the strategy, the drama.....its all an escape to a fantasy world of **** we wish we could do but can't. So by viewing ourselves as part of the team, our lives suck a little less, and its a positive distraction from day-to-day worries.

Drugs and alcohol work too, but they're not positive.

What you mean "We", white man? Oh wait, nevermind....
Actually I try to avoid using "We" unless I mean other fans. Although Player jumped my **** last week for saying "They're" instead of "We're", I like to be grammatically correct and I figure that I'm not on the team and the Steelers do not cut me a paycheck.

I try to use proper grammar at all times, but I have no issue saying things like "We need to convert in the red zone if we're going to beat Baltimore next week...".

Doesn't that sound so much better and more natural than "They need to convert..." or "The Steelers offense needs..."?

By the way, I like how the guy starting this thread thought he was the first person on the face of the Earth to ever have that specific thought...
