4 years for $68 million, per NFL Network
Especially the guaranteeThat actually is not a bad number. Now they have their OLBs locked up for years to come.
It's technically 5 years for $70 million, so $14 million per year. Obviously the new money is $17 million per year. I read that Highsmith was still on pace for 10 sacks over 17 games without Watt. That's pretty good. This deal in no way impedes the Steelers ability to keep Heyward.Good for him but $17 million is high for a guy with one good season where the overwhelming majority of his stats came with Watt on the field. $15 million would have been my absolute highest number with my original offer being in the $12 to 14 million range. He hasn't shown he is a No. 1 OLB but a No. 2 guy and definitely nowhere near elite. I sure hope this doesn't come back to bite them. It also makes it almost impossible to keep Cam unless he takes a HUGE pay cut.
I think thevdeal more signals that Heyward is coming to the end of his career and Highsmith is absorbing his salary. It's technically 5 years for $70 million, so $14 million per year. The deal signals Highsmith is a good, young player who plays a premium position well. Heyward really has nothing to do with it.I think thevdeal more signals that Heyward is coming to the end of his career and Highsmith is absorbing his salary.
His numbers would have been 8 to 9 sacks over an entire 17-game season without Watt. He had 3.5 sacks in 7 games. That is not very good and definitely not worth $17 million or anywhere near it. He needs to keep improving (significantly) and prove he can put up numbers without Watt. So far, he has not so this is a pretty big gamble and it definitely is a big cap hit in at least years 3, 4, and 5. They definitely won't be signing Cam now after this year. They will let him ride out his contract and see if they can get him cheap. There will be many more decisions coming up in a couple years. Muuth is set to make $15 million per (give or take a million). It's technically 5 years for $70 million, so $14 million per year. Obviously the new money is $17 million per year. Well good thing Watt is going to be on the field with Highsmith. I've seen multiple people who predict contracts for the Steelers and Jason from OTC say this is a good deal and at a dollar figure right around where they would expect. It's not like he got a high guaranteed value in in a few years he'll be like the No. 20 paid OLB, so I'm really not worried about the contract numbers. His numbers would have been 8 to 9 sacks over an entire 17-game season without Watt. Another issue would also be, if Highsmith left after this season, who steps in? I don't see Herbig as a long-term answer at OLB. If they sign a free agent who can produce, he'll cost a ton. That leaves a high draft choice. Pass rushers can take 2-3 years to develop, especially where the Steelers usually pick in the draft. You just waste the rest of Watt's prime developing a replacement. His numbers would have been 8 to 9 sacks over an entire 17-game season without Watt. He had 3.5 sacks in 7 games. I swear every time the Steelers re-sign a guy there's a flood of posts "they overpaid." A few years ago people were worried because Cam Heyward got the most money for a player over 30. That turned out okay. They don't always work out, but barring Highsmith pulling a Woodley (I don't think that'll happen), he should be a good player throughout the duration of this deal.I hate this he's a one he's a two b.s.. his numbers are his numbers and if you put a chump across from Watt it hurts his numbers too. This would be his value on FA market. He has been more consistent then Bud and he broke the bank at the time. Watch his highlights. Look how many times he forced fumbles that were not recovered. He is a unit and like I said best edge tandem in the league.
