I rather they keep Howard over Rudolph too. But that's how we see it. How do they see it? If they think they can win a championship, Rudolph still probably gives you the best chance to win a game or two if Rodgers gets a short term injury.
By the way,I might add to what I wrote when I listed Mason Rudolph’s lifetime contract numbers. These players should do everything they can to get to that 10 year mark if at all possible. That’s when the maximum pension plan benefit kicks in. Mason has to hang around the league 3 more contracts. I can assure everyone here that my pension plan doesn’t quite make that $200,000 per year level.

I like having Howard and Allar. You have Allar with the gun, but Howard has the accuracy and the intangibles. He's a proven winner. Allar went to PSU as the No.1 QB (at worst top 5) coming out of high school but didn't get a chance to do much in college due to poor coaching and injuries on the team. 2 seasons ago, he only had the No. 1 TE in college to throw to. Everyone else sucked. His OL was typically below average to downright awful.
That's why I think it is important to keep both on the team this year. One of them could be that guy, or maybe not. Both have things to like about them.

I still think Howard's most likely outcome is a 10+ year backup, but that's still a great career. He's gutsy and an easy guy to get behind and I bet he can rally his teammates. His upside is still a question.
I've seen the Allar to Flacco comparison and the Steelers would've hit a home run if they drafted a Flacco-level QB in the third.
These next couple of weeks will be fun watching these two compete. It won't always be good, but it's the most optimistic I've been about the Steelers in a long time.

It's a fun battle to watch and livens up the 2026 preseason, but I just don't believe the answer to our quaterback situation long term is even on the roster.
I hope we don't keep pounding our head against the wall thinking we're going to somehow produce a competent QB out of a 3rd or 6th round pick. And the truth is, even if we turn them into a decent B-level starter (which would be an amazing achievement), I still don't think that's what is going to change the fundemental trajectory of this franchise.
I don't see enough elite talent at other positions (that could change), I don't see a way for us to win via free agency or salary cap management to get ahead of other franchises.
We need a top-10 QB I think to really break free of our rut and that top-10 QB has to produce a top-10 offense. That's just the way the game is evolving. I think you can scheme of defense. I think you can find defense in mid-rounders and free agency. I think you can get lucky every other year or so and have a defense find turnovers (which can cover a lot of sins). But until you can put a competent offense on the field consistently, I think it's hard to consider yourself a top-4 or "elite franchise" in the NFL and really give yourself consistent shots at winning it all by consistently getting to the AFC championship game.

Yeah, but my flight boards at 7 and leaves at 7:30 as long as the storms clear out. I might get to see part of the second half if everything breaks right.

Well, think tonight clears up that pecking order pretty quickly. Rudolph isn’t getting traded without a pretty decent draft pick to compensate. Howard isn’t even close to being an NFL backup. Allar is our developmental quarterback. Howard probably is our practice squad qb.

I agree with this.
Yeah, it's not like your favorite NFL backup quarterback ever had a bad game in which he had a passer rating in the 30s, as Howard did last night. Oh wait...it happened in back-to-back weeks in 2019. Never mind.

Should’ve made a trade pre-training camp, sometimes an unknown quantity is better than a known one.
howard wont stay on practice squad.. Howard and Allar are both rookies with the same amount of game time in the NFL.

7 years ago… we need a capable backup now. If we didn’t have Allar Howard could definitely be our developmental #3 quarterback but we have Allar.

With an injury to another team he could be signed off. But we don’t have room for him on our 53 man.

Howard could top out at Rudy if he keeps developing…BUT
Luckily we already have in his prime Rudy in house, and under contract!!!
If Howard keeps his nose to the grindstone maybe one day he too can become a bonafide NFL backup like Rudy.
To my eyes Allar looks to be the superior NFL prospect and should be the guy competing with next year’s drafted QB for the starting role.
Or will Art just tell them to scoop up Cousins or some other ancient retread???

During his proven winning Howard always stepped on the field with the far superior talent than the opposition. It really helps when a QB has a stacked D, plays weaker opponents and has an offense just absolutely LOADED with weapons…not a scenario the Steelers will EVER be in tho.
Anything less than winning, when all he had to do is manage the game and not give it away, would have been uncivilized.
