The Steelers really didn't have much cap room at the end of the season. Frankly, I didn't think they would be able to sign Larry O. That was about 14 moves ago. The only big subtraction was Cam Sutton. They haven't even redone Heyward. I'm curious how the math of this works.
They pushed some of Minchah’s money out to free up cap space…his contract was designed to do that…
cutting Myles added more….more recently the cutting of Witherspoon and the extension of Mitch helps too
A few other things… we are operating under the rule of 51 right now… only the top 51 contracts count against the cap until the season starts… so if they sign someone for, say 3,000,000 it would knock one of those 750,000 contracts off the list and only really eat up 2,250,000.
Also when reports talk about cap space at the end of a year, it actually varies… some use pure cap space ( just who a team has under contract and dead cap money right then and there) this isn’t realistic.
If a team has, say, 30 players under contract, they still have to sign 23 just to fill out a roster… so narratives about them having say, 30 million dollars in cap space are kind of.misleading… 20 million or so of that is going to be spent on filling out that roster with league minimum contracts at least.
The best sites also factor in Draft pick wages too, since those are more or less known way before the draft even happens….
So when you read an article about cap space, just understand all the facts before you panic about a lack of it or start fantasy spending a glut of it… it’s often arranged to support a narrative to make an angle a more compelling story…
