The Steelers really didn't have much cap room at the end of the season. Frankly, I didn't think they would be able to sign Larry O. That was about 14 moves ago. The only big subtraction was Cam Sutton. They haven't even redone Heyward. I'm curious how the math of this works.

Omar and his understudies know how to work that math. I seen enough to know they are among the best at it.

Paying attention to this process it looks like they will need to restructure one more. They did a solid job freeing up money as they went. A lot different ways to maneuver and we have seen just about every aspect of it from extension, to cuts, to restructure, to the different vet rules available to use. This is one area of the team building that IMO stands taller than some of the others. It looks like with yet another scout hiring (3 in a short time-Jarrod Highberger the newest college scout - Jacksonville Jaguars) they are trying to catch up in the scouting department.

Now we just need every area of the coaching to follow suit. Especially OC. They heat is on the heat is ah on.

Cutting Jack saved a lot of money , now Witherspoon too

how much do we get for cutting Coolie?

how much do we get for cutting Coolie?

About 4 to 6 miles per gallon ………………

AND

The LUXURY S10 gives a sigh of relief……………..

But there is no intention of cutting him as he does bring some good things
to the table……………. (currently can’t list any though)

They pushed some of Minchah’s money out to free up cap space…his contract was designed to do that…

cutting Myles added more….more recently the cutting of Witherspoon and the extension of Mitch helps too

A few other things… we are operating under the rule of 51 right now… only the top 51 contracts count against the cap until the season starts… so if they sign someone for, say 3,000,000 it would knock one of those 750,000 contracts off the list and only really eat up 2,250,000.

Also when reports talk about cap space at the end of a year, it actually varies… some use pure cap space ( just who a team has under contract and dead cap money right then and there) this isn’t realistic.

If a team has, say, 30 players under contract, they still have to sign 23 just to fill out a roster… so narratives about them having say, 30 million dollars in cap space are kind of.misleading… 20 million or so of that is going to be spent on filling out that roster with league minimum contracts at least.

The best sites also factor in Draft pick wages too, since those are more or less known way before the draft even happens….

So when you read an article about cap space, just understand all the facts before you panic about a lack of it or start fantasy spending a glut of it… it’s often arranged to support a narrative to make an angle a more compelling story…

insomniac, didn't the Steelers also get some salary cap carryover from 2022?

Is it scary that we are up against the cap while having our qb on a rookie contract?

No. Look at what we have been able to do. At this point you should be close to or at the cap. It just isn’t all tied up in the QB.

But, the Steelers are not up against the cap. Depending on which site you view, they have either $11M (overthecap) or $10M (Spotrac) in cap space using the rule of 51. That's with 4 of their draft picks signed and without reworking or extending the contracts of TJ or Cam. That's a nice chunk of change if they want to go get someone when cutdowns happen.

NOT art all, that is whe3n you max out so as to “win” now with the lower QB contract to afford the guys to win now.

And they aren't done ... still have one roster spot to fill and, of bigger note, the Highsmith extension will likely get done this summer.

you are probs right. I hope not, would rather pay guys like TJ now
TJ is being paid now. They'll restructure his contract so that he gets even more right now and use that money to resign Highsmith.
I've seen folks saying they should not resign Highsmith and should replace him with Herbig after the season. Herbig hasn't even taken a real practice snap in the NFL. What if he sucks? Then you've allowed Highsmith to hit FA, and your options are paying him a **** ton of money to stay or paying him a **** ton of money under the franchise tag.
