If Minkah's contract would permit I'd cut him

I have defended Minkah alot and i feel the team is badly misusing him. When he first came over he was a ball hawk, then one year he was basically our best "LB" because our MLBs were terrible. . I feel like he made more plays today because he was closer to the line. The steelers need to let him use his instincts and be more pro-active vs reactive. We could pay anyone to play centerfield so im not sure why they would pay him then use him like any old scrub. People were bashing him for the one TD today and I was as well on first look, but the replay showed different. Henry was wide open in the flat. If Minkah went with Likely, Lamar would have dumped it to Henry which would have probably been a TD as well. Minkah covered the flat which left Likely open. Seems like someone else should have been over there one guy can not cover 2 guys / areas.

get someone else as a centerfielder so you can deploy an asset correctly

It’s not rocket surgery

Has he performed well when given other roles? Hell yeah he has.

He is likely NOT the problem

Maybe it’s a coach living in his fears that thinks one of his best defenders is necessary to be placed that far off the ball???

His deployment has been why we have been so insanely good against tge long ball this season... but I dont understand neutering a playmaker to do that. I feel a low cost Darren Perry type that plays cebterfield would be better at free safety while Mincah would be better at SS... but they want flexibility... and extra hitters at S... so we have elliott and Kazee...

I dont think Mincah is an issue at all... this is just the current defensive system... its not like playing S in a DLB scheme..

My absolutely favorite things about the Steelers defense, year after year after year after year:
  • Take a player who is remarkable doing something and decide he should do something different because ... well, because. Example: Ball-hawking Minkah now Spectator Minkah. Genius.
  • Communication. At least 5x per game, often more, opposing receivers are wide open due to "communication issues." Jesus H. Christ, maybe after about the 50th time a "communication" issue results in yet another blown coverage, how about completely revamping the inane system that seemingly requires "communication" that is some sort of combination of Ancient Sumerian, DOD-level encryption, and hieroglyphics??

Exactly ya get a lower cost capable guy for that role and move Minkah closer to the ball

Great post, reading my mind…actually thought of Darren Perry in this convo

Mincah is not one of the glaring issues on this team
Minkah is one of the glaring underperformers on a disappointing D.

Recall all the criticism of the contract for Heyward as this season began.

Which veteran has performed to his contract this year: Heyward or Fitzpatrick?

Wasn't it Minkah who left the TE wide open in the end zone for a TD?

Which? Happened twice... pathetic right?

I know you mean Likely but just pointing out how outcoached we were on D
Exactly. How did this happen? Look at the pre-snap confusion by Minkah (maybe the other DB lined up on the wrong guy?) on the last the last one. Who knows, maybe it was caused by the CB injuries, but this was a December game with PO implications......

Before we get rid of Minkah, we need to get rid of Austin and the dumbass who is out secondary coach (Grady Brown). Our secondary sucks ***! I watch other teams defensive backfields play and I wonder why the hell I always see our DBs trailing a crossing route 5 yards behind the player at the least. There are WRs so freakin open, a high school QB could have a field day pickin them apart. What is being taught because all I see is that JPJ has regressed a bit since last year! If our D line doesn't get home quickly, its normally at least a 10 yard pass pickup by the O. Hell, the Eagles had guys running lose all over our secondary for 20 yard plays all day! Should have kept Flores, but Mickey has his hands in too much for anyone they bring in to have the autonomy to make a difference!

Wait, I thought the pillow-soft coverage was Dick Lebeau's fault. No, it was Keith Butler's fault. No, turns out it's Teryl Austin's fault. Damn, as soon as the team manages to find that magic DC, things turn around!!

Oh, same with OC it seems. Bruce Arians is the problem. No, the problem is Todd Haley. Okay, the problem is Randy Fichtner and once that is fixed, HOO-BOY, trophy time! Okay, the real problem is Matt Canada (have to acknowledge merit here). Nope, problem is Eddie Faulkner. Dang it, the problem is now Arthur Smith!

God, this litany of terrible coaches is weighing down the greatness of Mike Tomlin! Who the hell is responsible for hiring these coa ... did you know Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season??

Is he playing well yes or no? No excuses. No reasons for. Yes or no.
He's playing the role they've asked him to play. Period.

Lots of arm chair coaches here. What would you have done, let's just look at Saturday, with both starting DBs out? Your partner at strong safety out?

Who can you trust to play their assignments?

TJ wasn't effective either. Wanna get rid of him too since he's not playing up to his standards???

Excuses and false equivalents. TJ Watt has more forced fumbles then Minkah has pass defenses. And hus r this year is an upturn from last year. He is paid 21 million dollars. It's hard to judge his play because you would need the all stadium eagle eye angle. PFF has him as the 64 best safety. Though I'm not big on them they do have the angle to see him doing his job.

Heyward playing well this season means nothing when he gets ran through for 7 ypc. Defense is so overrated. They are still awful against good teams. Still cannot stop the run.

But Heyward has made plays every single game. Tackles for loss pressures sacks.

If you watch the play minkah had to cover 2 guys / areas. Some one else messed up or it was just a bad play design. I'm not excusing him for some things, but in the play to Likely he was in no man's land. Personally I felt he should have stayed with likely and left Henry uncovered, but Henry with a head of steam from 10yrds out would have probably scored as well

He is having a great year statistically, but it means nothing on a soft defense that cannot stop the run, or cover on the back end, that gets torched for 30+ against good teams.
IMO

But he can only hold his gap and he has usually against double teams. Him and Ogunjobi are better paired. Not the same as a player who is basically MIA.

Still batting a 1.000 I see.
