Initial Thoughts on bengal Game

If you believe that this is Austin's defense.
Even if isnt Austin's defense he still needs to go because clearly hes not influential or trustworthy enough to incorporate anything meaningful into this defense. At some point you would think he would think about his own career. He'll never get another job anywhere. I would never allow someone to dictate my future like that.

The only way that happens is if Tomlin retires. Steelers can't fire the Rooney Rule coach.
I know you guys like to use the "Rooney Rule" like you use "fatigue". They won't fire him, but this is the thing. If he hasn't shown any signs of coming close to a SB by the time his contract ends there will be no obligation to resign him after that because everything he could possibly accomplish as a coach would have been fulfilled by the time his current contract expires including the longest win streak by a coach (because he wont have any losing seasons. He just won't.) They dont have to be tied to him like that. They can move on and there's no perceived backlash or whatever you guys may be concerned about not that it would be now.

He is 66 years old. Probably not looking for another job after this.

I’ll add this. They were the road team on Thursday and that’s a crap sandwich. These Thursday games are BS. The road team is at a huge disadvantage. That’s why I’m not freaking out.

Having said that, the bengals suck and the Steelers should have won even on a short week. Did they need a full week of prep to know they should cover Jamar Chase?

This was a huge loss. The Steelers could have had a commanding lead in the north and trey pissed it away. This is tge game you look at when they potentially lose the division down the line.

Wash, rinse, repeat until this fool coach is gone.
I've said this before: Tomlin is no fool.

After inheriting one of the greatest rosters a first-year coach has ever seen, and winning a Super Bowl a few years later with many of those players, he's been able to convince the national media (and more importantly, the Steelers' front office) that he is one of the best head coaches in the NFL. He's been astronomically compensated in relation to his actual coaching ability. MT parlayed his gift of gab way back in 2007 to secure the pole position under the Rooney Rule, and he has maintained the ultimate job security because of it. His net worth is well over $30 million.

Sometimes you simply have to hand it to an outstanding con man.

And yet somehow the Steelers were up 10-0 on the road on Thursday night. And one holding penalty away from starting out 14-0.

That is a potential silver lining, especially with several of their key guys on defense over 30 and probably needing the full week of rest a lot more than the younger guys.

However, the defense has struggled for most of the season.

Justin Fields looked like Lamar Jackson against them and has been terrible since, and the Steelers were already near the bottom of the league in pass defense before the Bengals game, I believe.

It's generally been the same things we've been seeing for a long time in which if they don't generate a million sacks and turnovers, they cannot stop anyone.

The growing problem is that Watt and Heyward are starting to become less consistent, and they need better pass coverage to compensate.

The secondary play has been a sore spot for years now, at least since the first couple years Joe Haden and Minkah were playing together.

Tomlin deserves most of what he gets but last night was mostly on the players. The defense won very few one on one battles.
So given the poor player performance, clearly evident in the 17 point 2Q, what adjustments did the coaches make in personnel or scheme or whatever for the entire 2nd half? If the response is that players played a little less badly, is it not still on the coaching staff to have the best performers that day on the field?

On another TD Jones punched Rodgers in both shoulders as if he were blocking a pass rusher. Just shows how low this guy's IQ really is 😥
Low IQ and high testosterone not a good combination in terms of judgment and awareness.

What is so sad this year in particular is that when you mentioned the Pittsburgh Steelers you always thought sturdy tough Defense. From the days of the Steel Curtain (was in Pittsburgh in grad school when they won they first superbowl with a defensive struggle with the Vikings) through the Blitzburgh years and so on

Now? This is an embarrassing over-priced group of "Defenders" who can't defend.

Dick Lebeau was the last solid defensive coach.

Tomlin's defensive coaching skills seem like a deer looking at headlights!:(
NOBODY in the last 10-15 years has thought “tough, sturdy Defense”.

Tomlin’s defenses have always had him looking like a deer in the headlights. The guy was/is an excellent “talker”, that’s how he got the HC job. He talked himself up then, and does to this day to keep his job.

This is a good post. How they played is whatever, though that type of defensive performance has been a trend this season. The result was massive and absolutely a single game you can point to if they don't win the division. The Steelers had a chance to create a sizeable gap with a challenging schedule coming up. Instead, they gave everyone else life and that game is going to close quickly.

He was truly shaken and shattered during that Jags loss.

This is why Cleveland sent Flacco to Cincy. They are a loser organization who can chalk up this spite move as their best win in years.
It was vintage Belichickian stuxnet sabotage or at least worked out that way. Tomlin was probably fighting panic attacks early in the week knowing what he was facing. Could tell he was rattled bringing it up.

At some point, someone in the home office needs to listen when a former coach or player or even a current one says something along the lines of " we knew what they were going to do because it has not changed in years."

So, we'll be lucky to win 1 of the next 3 games. I can see all 3 teams putting up 30+ on this D. Then, we get the Bungholes, probably with Burrow back, who will easily light us up for 30+ especially since Flacco did it with such ease. Was this the start of a complete slide the rest of the season or can Tomlin figure out how to be a D coach once again?
