Initial Thoughts on colts Game

Im not complaining. It Will probably be their signature win of the season but when you need 6 turnovers to win by seven I think it tells you quite a but about the state of things. Like is kinda 12-14 possession roughly in a game. That's nearly half the possession. Wilson and Highsmith are funny. Look pro bowl this week. Presto- change- o dissapear next. But hey edges and defense were significantly better.

We live or die by the turnover and have the last few years. It is not sustainable, but when it works it looks great. When it doesnt work we give up 30+. I am not sure if our defense was good or Indy had a bad game plan. We did put Wilson and Highsmith in the crossing / slant lanes which helped. The cover 2 was still beat pretty easy several times though. I think Ramsey at safety was a good move and the other D backs played decently. I dont know if we stopped warren or Indy just did not target him enough. We did do a decent job on Taylor though. I think Indy should have bootlegged Jones or gave him some runs. Regardless this was a surprising win and makes up for one of the terrible losses.
I'm of the opinion there's two types of turnovers. There's the type where the turnover is on the offense. Badly thrown passes, wrong reads, bad ball security... That is not sustainable. I'd say all the turnovers today except the muffed punt were created by the defense playing fast. Yes there were more turnovers than usual, but if the defense plays at that level, it is sustainable, even if you don't get that amount of turnovers every game.

The real question is getting the defense to play at that speed and passion game in game out.

I believe yinz guys are getting too hung up on the final margin of victory..
The Steelers controlled the play after the first couple drives of the game. We were the more physical team and our coaching staff out coached theirs.
Not to steal a line from a famous Pittsburgh Steeler fan.
But… 1..2..3..WIN!

It was weird. They went for numerous 4th downs and converted them. Didn't matter where on the field. I believe on most of those 3rd down converts outside of their original drive we ended up getting a TO to stop them. So the 4th down converts didn't hurt us in the long run. Ir hurr them....kind of. Go figure.

Announcers said they simplified the D, players didn’t look confused anymore. Question is, why did this easy fix take so long?
The other question is, why is the D so confusing? They used to say it took 2 to 3 years to fully learn the LeBeau D. Why would they have something so "difficult" to learn nowadays, especially when they constantly talk about not being in their gap or it was a communication issue? The D is not rocket science. It shouldn't be that hard to learn..

Dominant efforts with a nice bounce back from the defense. The offense took advantage of the turnovers, which was huge. We stole a win today in a game they probably should've lost and I am not going to get too excited because they aren't going to force that many turnovers every week--Danny Dimes was bad. If I'm a Colts fan, the idea of being a pretender would be creeping into my head.

Seriously.

Many people are talking like it was a tight game throughout.

The Steelers led 17-7 at halftime and 27-10 with around five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Could the Steelers have won by more? Yeah, but the Colts were 7-1 for a reason.

Seen this movie before. I knew they would win today. Was not worried in the slightest. I’m not gonna get too excited. Still plenty of loseable games on the schedule.

That said, today felt like a revelation. The defense was fast, aggressive, forced turnovers and collected sacks. The offense was pretty solid but they still have issues getting out of their own way.

This team has potential. Just seems like if it can go wrong, it will. Today it didn’t. And that’s a good thing.
Same. I'm thrilled with today's result, but I know better than get my hopes up. After beating the best (by record) team in the league with an impressive performance today, who do the Steelers play next?

The Chargers?

On the road, west coast game?

Sunday night, prime time?

Yeahhhhhhhhh about thaaaaaaaat....

They definitely cannot depend on that many turnovers every week, but the defensive performance was more than just "splash," though.

Shutting down Taylor on the ground might have been the most impressive aspect of the game for them.

Against the best team in the league to date with a previously nigh unstoppable RB? We made Jines look like the Giants version.
They had 140 more yards, 9 more first downs and were 11/19 on 3rd and 4th down vs the Steelers 5/14.

Take the win, but it’s highly unlikely they turn the ball over 6 times if the Steelers play them again.

Nah. Every player at every position on every team has bad games. Until today, the guy has been fantastic. Now, if it continues, then there is certainly cause for concern. And I know and understand Jones’ history. But he’s been terrific this year so far. I wouldn’t be worried. Yet.

I am shooketh.
Did NOT see this coming.
Defense finally played up to their price tag…..sort of. Mostly.
Offense? Meh.
Let’s see if we can continue success.
I’ll be hopeful for once.

I definitely would. He got completely cooked by one of the worst defenses in the league. No way do I trust him to outduel Allen or Mahomes. It was clear his head coach thought he could go out and win the game with his arm and completely treated the ground game with JT as an afterthought and Jones reverted back to the norm. He'll still win a lot of games, but absolutely an element of doubt is there.

So this game was the big adjustment game... Tomlin is known for running stuff stubbornly till he is forced to change. A few years ago we used to lead the league in cover 2 a d cover 3, and teams picked it apart

Then we swapped to more man than anyone else was running, abd for a bit it caught the league off balance, but they adjusted

Now we were getting crushed so Tomlin brought out a lot of cover 2 so people could cover tge short stuff without tomlin being afraid of the deep passes killing his D

This will last for a couple games until teams go back to attacking his zones again , but i dont think we will adjust again

Its like with the Oline every other year, we simplify stuff because we cant properly teach the elaborate concepts, but because its simple, it eventually gets countered, abd we are slow to adapt

I’m not buying in! I’ve seen this script play out so many times in the past.
Lose two or three in a row and come out of nowhere to win a game no one gave them a chance to win.
Turnovers are great but you simply cannot rely on them consistently week after week.
You saw what happened against the Bengals and Packers.
You must have good, sound schematics and your players must stay in their gaps and execute. Coaches have to put their players in the best positions to win.
If the Steelers can continue with that formula then yes they have a chance.
If they go back to playing undisciplined then its back to games like the Bengals and Packers.

Jones Jonesed it.

It seemed like the Def played as a team more. Meaning they stuck to their assignments/lanes
You could see them aggressively gang tackling, that fire shown today was missing.

Add to that better planning, dropping backers to stop slants lanes, giving more time to the rushers to put real pressure on the qb

Overall, the Colts had been one of the more dominant teams the league has seen in awhile and the Steelers took it to them.

Don't let their garbage yards late in the game twist things. It was a great defensive performance against a team with both their QB and RB having MVP seasons.

The offense left some points on the board, but it's not like they were terrible today. Rodgers continues to play extremely well.

It's just frustrating because it makes you wonder why they cannot play like this more consistently.

Ramsey playing safety exclusively is a good thing. He looks a lot faster there than at CB at this point of his career.

Ramsey put that BIG hit on, something we haven’t seen from a safety in quite awhile..

In fairness, this wasn’t the same Steelers defense we saw in previous weeks. The Steelers defense today was different. Aggressive. Just plain better.

As far as out dueling Allen or Mahomes, he doesn’t have to. He just has to beat their defenses, which after watching the game this afternoon/evening, aren’t anything special.

I thought their gameplan was terrible. They mostly ignored the run. I understand it though, based on the last two games worth of film that the Steelers produced. Most other coaches would have done the same. No one, including Steelers fans, expected that effort from the Steelers. Everyone expected more of the same because up until today, that’s what the Steelers continually do.

I’ll credit Pittsburgh, because they came out with a different plan and it worked because absolutely no one expected it. The Colts had no film on what the Steelers did today. Neither did anyone else.

People were playing like their jobs were on the line, or something.....

BIG Art 2 had a little chat, while playing the players on the Ping Pong tables.
