Initial Thoughts on jets game

Yup.

Unless something dramatic happens and Allar gets on the field and proves himself in the regular season, they need to draft a QB in the top 15 picks of the draft next year if the chance to do it and the right guy is there.

If the guy they draft and Allar are both great, that’s draft capital

I get the sense Howard might be cut and they can hope he might make it back to the practice squad
I have a feeling we'll once again be underwhelmed with the QBs available in the draft.

Allar was under significant pressure, trying to hit receivers blanketed by the defense, and still threw a dozen strikes. Despite the very mediocre protection, he delivered a lot of very accurate throws, often under intense pressure, and the receivers dropped or choked 5-6 catches. The power he can get on a quick throw with no room to move his feet is impressive.

That, my brother, is the conundrum we face.

Who knows which QB will carry the franchise to a SB? I'm focusing on a couple of SEC candidates but I'll widen the scope as the season kickoffs.

My sleeper is Trinidad...

From my brief watch both QBs did reasonably well. The INTs looked awful and I don't know enough to know who to blame. If it was timing routes being thrown to a spot and McCarthy is drilling them to trust the system and the receivers then that's one thing. The other is you have to know if something isn't there.
Otherwise I thought Howard looked quite polished which surprised me.
Allar did well making lemonade from Lemons. Outside of that he also took the check downs and took off when he needed to. We need to see him with more consistent players around him.

Looking at the coaches film views I think that Howard was just late seeing it both times. Both times 14 was open and both times the window closed in a hurry. The first INT looked really bad with 30 open on the outside.
I'm not sure if this is just a young QB in need of reps or if he hasn't got the vision, anticipation and/or arm for the tight window throws needed in the NFL.

If no one on roster is the dude Id like Notre Dame kid.
If he decides to come out early, he could be an option..

Slightly undersized for what I like to see in a NFL QB…and arm strength could be a touch stronger IMHO..

But the kid has just about everything else to be successful at next level.

I want to see how this season goes before giving my final opinion

I love how people want to dismiss both Howard and Allar already. It is their second game. Neither guy has looked awful. Howard put together 2 good drives against much better competition. They ended in ints, but MM seemed to blame Wilson for those. Allar was good last week, and was decent this week given the circumstances. I dont think Ben lit it up in preseason while Pickett looked like a HOFer in his last preseason here. People need to relax a bit. The online is definitely concerning, but we will see once all the starters get in there. I think the Jones experiment is over. I made some excuses for him in the past, but this was kind of his prove it year abs he has looked bad. I think we are OK at WR. We haven't seen the top 2 guys yet. I would make Ben #3 to start and have Bernard #4. Wilson has probably played himself off the team. I think Wetjen makes it and not sure if we keep a 6th or not. Defense I think will be ok all around

Actually, Roman Wilson ran his mesh route about 5 yards too deep, allowing the cover-1 safety to easily step in and intercept the pass. Still a bad read by Howard, but also equally poor execution by the receiver. Had nothing to do with his arm strength.

I dont think anyone is dismissing. But in all likelihood this is the time when they are going to need to sus out whether they need to draft a QB next year or not. And that got a whole lot more murky on Friday. Also I dont really understand how they can carry 4 qbs on the 53.

Allar can make the off-platform throws that the great ones can, but the problem with him at Penn State was that he attempted too many throws in that way when he didnt have to.

The most encouraging thing about his preseason play has been the consistency in mechanics compared to where it was at Penn State.

It's the "McCarthy Effect" in action, but also reflects pretty badly on James Franklin.

I would like to see Allar get to throw to Metcalf and Pittman in an actual game, but there is little chance of that in 2026 unless injuries hit the QB position especially hard.

The WRs he and Howard are throwing to in the preseason are either not very good, or in the case of Bernard, inexperienced.

I like Trinidad, it's just rare to see small QBs translate to the NFL and he'll be a 25-year old rookie.

1. Arch Manning, Texas
2. Dante Moore, Oregon
3. Darian Mensah, Miami
4. Drew Mestemaker, Oklahoma State
5. Julian Sayin, Ohio State
6. CJ Carr, Notre Dame
7. LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina
8. Jayden Maiava, USC
9. Drake Lindsey, Minnesota
10. Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss

I’m not dismissing them. They also haven’t proven they are good enough to justify skipping drafting a QB in round 1 in 2027 if the right guy can be had

So we take a guy in 2027 he plays in 2 preseason games and has a bad one. Then people will be like xxxx is not the answer we need to draft a QB in 2028. No one has a clue how good Allar or Howard will be and we may not even find out this year. If Aaron stays healthy we won't get a look at the other guys till next year. We could waste first round picks on qbs the next 10 years and not get another Ben. Pretty soon we will be QB collectors like the Browns

Allar’s arm strength allows him to hit those tight windows that Howard seemed to not try.

Howard has no more experience in NFL games than Allar and with the new system of MM,
owards last year offensive experience amounts to nothing.

I know Allar needs time to continue to develop and Howard needs time as well.

Currently I give the nod to Drew, look how far he has come with his mechanics / vision / understanding the play book.

Sooooo are these still considered initial thoughts even though it has been. Few days?

YES

But note that Lunar thought this thread was about his initials

I hope they do great and one of them is the next franchise QB, I do.

Howard won a natty at Ohio State, but was a 6th round pick-that’s highly unlikely to be a mistake by the entire league. Allar was a 3rd round pick and won nothing at Penn State. The odds of the entire league including the Steelers being wrong about their prospects and not snatching them up earlier than that are minuscule.

The odds of one of them becoming even someone like Brock Purdy or Jimmy Garapolo, are very low.

Until we have a franchise QB, we have nothing. They likely get one more preseason game and then nothing till after the 2027 draft in playing time.

You can’t delay drafting a top QB if he’s there, there is nothing tangible pointing to one of these guys being that guy. Could they be wrong about a high draft pick-sure. You half keep trying until you find your guy.

The Browns are screwed not because they have a lot of QBs, but because they thew a record breaking contract at Watson who was clearly damaged goods, I doubt Khan is that dumb
