Is all of PA racist?

how do you head "down" to Michigan from Florida or even Pennsylvania?

I wonder if you get better gas mileage when traveling down to Florida then when traveling back up to Pa.

Went to school at UGA, so to be honest there are some hardcore racist, but the South gets a bad rep cause of their history. From the sound of things, I think the North sounds more racist. But as some posters said its culture. As a civil society and me personally being a parent. I try to shield my son from the ugly side of society. Racism is alive and well today. I'm not one to point fingers and say I wasnt hired cause of my skin color etc. I think the creditantials behind your name make or break you in society. So every one is equal. But in other aspects of life I'm sure its worse. I never really experienced any hostility personally. So I'm biting my tongue on this one

In fairness I haven't spent much time in the south in years. But when I lived there I knew people who threw the N word around in normal conversation like it was nothing. My niece who went to Alabama in the last 5 years transferred back up north partially because of some blatant racism she encountered(not directed at her, she's white. But she couldn't stand to be around people like that. And it wasn't just backwards rednecks, it was rich sorority girls.)

MS is awful. My brother's wedding was held there back in the late 80's. I had never seen anything like it. I have seen racism growing up in AZ and living in the midwest but it was nothing like the outward racism and hate that I witnessed down south.

I think some of the people in WPA are not intentionally racist, well-meaning but a tad backward and ignorant (a la Wendy Bell commenting on that nice hard-working black guy she saw as if it was some sort of pleasant surprise). I mean, I knew people who still called black people "coloreds" there and I honestly don't think they knew that term is frowned upon.

Head down to AL, MI, or LA and you'll find some people who actually thoroughly despise black people.

I think most are probably well-intentioned, and just don't realize that some of the words they use are truly offensive. I can't speak for central or eastern PA. I have travelled to both but never lived there.

But I can speak for WPA. I spent most of my life there (all up and down the west, from Pgh to Erie and points in between), but that is not why I realize there is a lot of racism there; I know because I moved away and come back to visit. And when I do, I am surprised the
way many people speak and how offensive they can be. I even have friends who speak in such a way that I know longer will spend any face time with them. Even in
“dahntahn," people really don't think they are racist but actually are. You can even hear/see it at Steeler games.

Heck, my neighbor, where I grew up, actually would say things about blacks like "They aren't human. They are closer to apes" and thought nothing about it, as if it were simply true and thinking in such a way
was nothing to be ashamed of (And she also grew up in Mississippi and thoughts cats were creatures of the devil, so......)

I realize there are pockets of hillbillies and rednecks in just about in any state. And the most-telling connection to racism is ignorance. The more ignorant an area, the more likely racist. The specific area where I live
has nearly zero racism, but head west and it won't be long before you run into some real rednecks.

Oh, for sure. It isn't just the rednecks who can be racist. There are whole pockets where mid or upper-mid class are blatant racists in states like AL, MS, AR. et al.

Yes

This is an extreme cult of people who like to call themselves speciests. They don't believe that the actions they observe represent any genes from their own generic species, so they must from another specie of human form.

They post examples too.

For instance, I saw a post that asked if you could tell the difference in these two pictures...

Their answer was indeed the color of the cars.

Hey, they are out there, nobody denies that. To me it's easy to point to examples of just the opposite but then again...I'm in the minority corner a lot of the time. Maybe I'm just lucky to have friends that are minorities that I can coexist with and enjoy their company, maybe some people don't want to even try.

I hear you. My auntie's bf is from Louisiana and he drops the N word like nothing. He's quite the racist too. I wouldn't doubt it about the sorority girls either. UGA was the same, Alabama was in vice news for not accepting black into their sorority/fraternity clubs, Oklahoma was in the news last year. I'm hispanic, never experienced anything in my time in GA. But I've been around people who had their opinions about blacks, etc. Hope your niece finished school btw. I hope her experience didnt deter her way of thinking. It's good to get out and experience different things out of state. Although I didnt finish my degree, I learned a bit of independency

and MA, NY, NJ ..

A short story showing this theme, very subtly - Faulkner, "Everything That Rises Must Converge."

Its in every state. I think some people are more prone to be racist unconsciously. The mid-upper class is an example of that. Racism never died, it's always been a part of U.S history. Best thing to do is try to be civil and tolerant

Blacks are considered subhuman in many parts of the world, mainly in the Middle and Far East.

Remember that Japanese PM that said that blacks are the reason the US has so many problems and another who said blacks pull down the education levels in America?
