Is it time for the D to change ?

No… the obsession with going back to tge 4-3 is absurd in this fanbase… and they barely use base anyhow… if we ran 4-3 with tomlins stuff bush or a bush like person would still be at ilb and we’d have an olb in coverage virtually every play…
Greene White Holmes Greenwood is why the fanbase is obsessed with the 4-3 ..It will never be that again and we don't draft for that until we change who we draft we will and should not be a 4-3 team...but yes I would at least like to get back to a 3-4

We missed up the defense when we cut Nelson and didn't sign an adequate replacement. We knew who we had on the roster. Hilton was already gone. 2 starting CBs gone
Looking at the QBs in the AFC that is a recipe for disaster
Loosing Tuitt and Alualu was unexpected and could not have been foreseen in my opinion
The defense was hurt far more by the loss of Tuitt and Alualu than Nelson. If Tuitt returns you still sign one vet FA, if not - then 2.

That was the absolute worst rush defense ever by the Steelers. Even during the 80s they were far better with bums like Daryl Sims, Aaron Jones and Tim Johnson. There’s no excuse for that level of incompetence where one could fall in the way and do better up front.

Anymore, teams aren’t using a standard 3-4 or 4-3 defense there is a hybrid of sorts going on. you have to have 5 backs on the field all the time now.. you going to give up a d-lineman or a linebacker? That’s the question. Our phony schemes where try we try to “fool” qbs where we end up with linebackers on wrs don’t really work especially against good teams and pulling the nose tackle makes you vulnerable to the run, as we were this year. 3-4 vs 4-3 is not as valid as asking what coverage, deep safeties or man-zone or both? Watch how the bengals and rams get after it, both morphing the defense between showing multiple fronts with multiple blitz packages using deep safeties that work both with the backs and linebackers to “bracket” the receivers. Watch the tape of the chiefs blow torching the Steelers defense then watch the chiefs-bengals tape where the bengal bracketed the chiefs playmakers taking mahomes out of the game almost completely. Because they didn’t sacrifice out of the defensive front line they were also able to pressure the qb and stop the run. Whats ironic is these defenses can be traced back to Noll’s defenses his cover 2 and cover 3’s. WPA use to rule the football world now it just watches.

It is much easier to find a suitable WR or RB during the season. Finding a suitable CB/LB/DL the same way is a crap shoot. OL for that matter as well.

This is a 4-3 team that has led the league in sacks the past 5 seasons. You don't break that success when you've done it different ways with different personnel. Saying TJ should only rush the passer would have killed Harrisons longest play in SB history. That's why dropping TJ is effective if you're expecting the rush and the overload comes from the other side when he drops.
That is why they get paid the big bucks. To evaluate and react it doesn't matter if it is more difficult. There was free agents to look at and PS's to look at. They still reacted by the way again just took too long doing it. Who is saying TJ should just pass rush?

You and I define success way differently. Success is winning playoff games. We will just keep it there as the team hasn't even been able to do that let alone look competitive in its persuit.

Just look at the Steelers last game and their first TD.

Looks like point shaving. He had zero intent of making that tackle. A 9 year old boy would have slowed him more.

What a ******* joke the league has become.
I don't think it is point shaving. I think it is lackluster effort from a soft football player. He got his one year of recovery for better or worse. There should be no more luxuries moving forward. If the play doesn't improve he should be cut or benched. He needs to soul search in the off-season for the man. Because the version he is putting out on the football field is anything but that. Little tough on him more than perhaps some would be, because I know the talent is there. The want to just has to accompany it.

I would have benched him and traded him after seeing that play. That's the job you get paid retarded amounts of money to do. A 9 year old boy could have done better. There's zero excuses for what I saw. That's just one play out of many I'm sure. In the words of Chuck Noll," If I have to motivate you,I will cut you."

And here lies some of the overall problems with the team. Guys cashing checks, looking cool and doing things half ***. They need to remove all of that. It isn't about the person being nice, it's about building a championship football team. You let down the other guys who are actually committed to excellence with that type of bullshit.

All falls on the coaches. Don't allow that kind of player on the field. I'd put a hungry practice squad player on before I'd put a lazy half *** player on.

I would love to see us move Bush for a player or a pick. I think we were chasing rainbows and unicorns trying to reimagine Bush as a Ryan Shazier-clone. He's nowhere near the same type of player. There's a certain set of standards for playing linebacker in the 'Burgh. Neither Bush nor Schobert come even close to making the cut. It's time to reboot the ILB position entirely.

3-4 or 4-3 doesnt matter. Most teams run a ton of 3 WR sets now. If you run a 3-4 or 4-3 you typically have 2 CBs and 2 safeties. That leaves mismatch on a WR. If we use one of our OLBs in zone we are taking TJ or Highsmith out of the passrush. If our MLBs drop we are leaving the middle open along with the fact our MLBs cant cover WRs. Our base should probably be a 3-3-5. If the other team is running alot you can always bring the safeties up a bit and if they are using 2 WR sets then we can go to our 3-4. I dont think we should ever use the 2-4-5 unless we are way ahead and we are blitzing alot from it.

Problem is these contracts today are too big. Guys are just scraping by to get the guaranteed money contract.

Winning a championship is a nice novelty but the real win is getting that big contract knowing you will not have to work too hard in retirement

lack luster? At 13 yrs old i would have made that tackle, not a doubt in my mind.

Talk of different type of players, scheme change, ect. will NEVER happen until the man who akes those decisions either changes or leaves. I highly doubt anything drastic will happen for at least two ore years.
