Shinzo Abe, Japan's former prime minister, assassinated at a campaign stop

NARA, Japan, July 8 (Reuters) - Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest-serving leader, died on Friday hours after he was shot while campaigning for a parliamentary election, shocking a country in which political violence is rare and guns are tightly controlled.

The shooter opened fire on Abe, 67, from behind as the former premier addressed members of the public on a drab traffic island in the western city of Nara. Japanese media reported that the weapon appeared to be a homemade gun.

"This attack is an act of brutality that happened during the elections - the very foundation of our democracy - and is absolutely unforgivable," said Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Abe's protege, struggling to keep his emotions in check.

It was the first killing of a sitting or former Japanese leader since a 1936 coup attempt, when several figures including two ex-premiers were assassinated.

Doctors were unable to revive Abe, who was taken to hospital in cardiopulmonary arrest and showing no vital signs. He was declared dead at 5:03 p.m. (0803 GMT), about five and a half hours after being shot.

He bled to death from deep wounds to the heart and the right side of his neck, despite receiving more than 100 units of blood in transfusions over four hours, Hidetada Fukushima, the professor in charge of emergency medicine at Nara Medical University Hospital, told a televised news conference.

Police said a 41-year-old man suspected of carrying out the shooting had been arrested. NHK quoted the suspect, identified as Tetsuya Yamagami, as telling police he was dissatisfied with Abe and wanted to kill him. The suspect told police he had made multiple handmade explosives and guns in the past, NHK said.

Japanese Gun Control Laws Are Oppressive (From Gun Control, P 252-259, 1992, Charles P Cozic, ed. -- See NCJ-160164)

Annotation
Japan's strict gun-control laws are unfair and oppressive; although some people assert that Japan's low crime rate is due to gun control, it is actually due to Japan's culture.

Abstract
Other than the police and the military, no one in Japan may purchase a handgun or a rifle. Hunters and target shooters may possess shotguns and airguns under strictly circumscribed conditions. The police check gun licensees' ammunition inventory to make sure there are no shells or pellets unaccounted for. A prospective gun owner must take an official safety course and then pass a test that covers maintenance and inspection of the gun, methods of loading and unloading, shooting from various positions, and target practice for stationary and moving objects. The license is valid for 3 years. When not in actual use, all guns must be in a locked space. So comprehensive are the gun laws that even possession of a starter's pistol is allowed only under carefully prescribed conditions. The Japanese crime rate is low. Handguns were used in 209 crimes in 1985. About two-thirds of all gun crimes are committed by organized crime groups. The citizens apparently voluntarily comply with the gun law; accordingly, there is no mandatory minimum penalty for unlicensed firearm possession. Pressure to conform and internalized willingness to do so are much stronger in Japan than in America. The spirit of conformity provides the best explanation for Japan's low crime rate. It also explains why the Japanese people accept strict gun control. A gun ban in America similar to that in Japan would be alien to our society, which for over 300 years has had the world's strongest gun culture. Japan's gun laws are part of an authoritarian philosophy of government that is fundamentally at odds with America's traditions of liberty.

So two things… Abe was one of the true defenders of national sovereignty in the world and even in retirement a stumbling block for socialized globalization…

secondly as I’ve said before… access to legal weapons are irrelevant … homemade bombs and guns are easy to make if you have any access to that information or any skills in those areas…

As a teenager, my friends and I experimented with all sorts of things just to see if they’d work… from hommade napalm to a makeshift rifle to tennis ball bombs, which if some sick ******* loaded with shrapnel, can be way more deadly than any gun…

A few gallons of gasoline with bad intentions can really do some serious damage.

Wake up....Wake up.... Pretty sad when far too many members of our armed forces just go along to get along and in turn support globalization which is happening right under our eyes.
I've said it over and over. History proves, militaries will go against the citizens and Constitution when ordered to do so. Our biggest allies are retired military and the armed citizens. But, I don't think we will see any significant uprising or push back by the people in this lifetime. I see decades of suffering before man has the stones and the insatiable yearning for freedom, to actually fight together as one to make a difference. But, sadly, I don't think there will be anything like America again. Let's face it. There has never been such an experiment in the history of mankind. Most likely, never happen again. Not the way the Founders intended.

Yeah, guns have been basically illegal in Japan since they were invented.
