Jarvis decision today?

Starks also won a Superbowl at 2 different positions. We may have overpaid, but we remained competitive.

I'd be surprised if JJ's second contract is more than 8M combined...

Report: Steelers Decline Fifth-year Option On LB Jarvis Jones
http://www.Invalid Link - Check SN ...rs-decline-fifth-year-option-lb-jarvis-jones/

As many of us expected, the Pittsburgh Steelers have opted not to pick up the fifth-year option on the rookie contract of outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.

He's a free agent... <a href="https://t.co/1WSjhFoWXd">https://t.co/1WSjhFoWXd</a></p>— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) <a href="https://twitter.com/JFowlerESPN/status/727282337029873665">May 2, 2016</a></blockquote>

Jones, who is entering the final year of the four-year contract that signed after being drafted in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, will be allowed to test free agency next offseason if the two sides don’t work out an extension prior to the start of the 2017 league year. The Georgia product is currently scheduled to earn a base salary of $1,592,115 in 2016. Had the Steelers picked up Jones fifth-year option he would have been scheduled to earn $8.369 million in 2017.

Jones, who has registered all of five sacks during his first three seasons in the league, now has every incentive in the world to have a solid 2016 season with the Steelers. With that said, he’s still likely to platoon on the right side of the Steelers defense in 2016 with veteran James Harrison, who appears set to play out the final year of his current contract.

As things stand right now, one would think that the Steelers will be looking to draft another outside edge-rusher in the early rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft being as Jones, Harrison and Arthur Moats are all likely playing their final seasons in Pittsburgh. The team did, however, address the outside linebacker in this year’s draft with the selection of Washington product Travis Feeney in the sixth-round. Additionally, the Steelers also spent two draft picks on edge-rushers last year that netted them Bud Dupree and Anthony Chickillo.

Damn, now I'm gonna go back and watch tape on this kid. Seems like he needs to add 10-15 pounds at the minimum to hold the edge, otherwise, he's got Shazier-type speed and athleticism.

It seems clear the Steelers are finally admitting that Jarvis is 'below the line', using Tomlin speak. Five sacks over three years for a first round pick. Ouch.

Anyone want to take a leap of faith and predict they'll try to ween off of Jarvis as early as this summer? It seems unlikely, but if Feeney - or even Chickillo - have a solid camp & preseason, maybe it won't be Jarvis rotatiing with Deebo, but Deebo/Feeney or Deebo/Chickillo at ROLB? If that's the case, you have to wonder if Jarvis will even make it out of camp. Who knows if they've lost that level of faith in him, but I wouldn't be completely shocked.

I realize I'm jumping the gun here, just thinking out loud.

edit - of course it's entirely possible they sign him to a new, cap friendly deal and Jarvis stays here for years. ;)

I'd think the kid from Miami that they picked up as an UDFA might just be as happy as Feeney ... Chick too

But to make a move as you suggest, would be admitting that he was a bad draft pick, and this team is ultra slow to ever admit a mistake with high draft picks. I mean, they think they are "the smartest guys in the room" don't forget.

at the very least they are smarter than you...............

I'd like to keep him to a cheap contract, he can be the new rotational backup when Moats' contract ends

Back in his 3rd year, I was hoping Jarvis would show some big improvement but he followed the Ziggy Hood career path...he leveled off at mediocre. Seems the folks who disliked the pick from Day 1 were correct in this instance. Let's just hope Dupree can offer much more during the life of his first contract.

8M for a year of Jarvis Jones would have been a terrible, terrible decision

.

Words right out of my mouth. I bet he went to his local track and ran winds sprints for an hour, then drank a whole blender full of Whey Protein.

May the best athlete win.

Maybe we end with a third round comp pick when he leaves.

Who's gonna pay Uncle Jarvis? Uncle Dick? Steelers West? Jarvis made a nice chunk of change on his rookie deal ... maybe he should follow the modified "Worilds model" ... leave before they're SURE they've seen your best.

Edit: and the above statement is from someone who hoped against all evidence that Jarvis was going to improve significantly by the end of last season.

My only worry about Feeney: is he mean? I know it's a silly question, but...

Y'all remember Scott Shields. Big, strong, fast, smart. Looked like Tarzan, played like Jane. A safety that didn't want to hit anyone.

Look at this guy. He looks like someone you might cross the street to avoid...

Now look at Travis. The kid's got "Son In Law" written all over him.

Does he have the killer instinct? I just don't know...
