Deebo on this situation:

 
I heard Deebo say that and I can't believe it. I think they absolutely offered him something. Why wouldn't they? It makes absolutely no sense. My guess as I've said before is they offered him something around $25 million per year and I think it's a good offer. I can't see them getting into the $30's as JPJ's agent wants.

Who knows, but it's the sort of private info that former Steelers might know.

This seems inconsistent with the Herbig, Washington and Benton deals, which all seemed above market.

What is the date of the Deebo video ???

The Steelers have made an offer, there is money on the table.

How would Deebo be privy to that intimate of information, is it he said / they said ?

I surely don’t know either way, but common sense says there’s been money talk between JPJ
and the Steelers.

There are few articles in the Trib that are saying the Steelers have yet to make an offer.

They would be laughing at a League high payday for a non pro bowl level guy who played well for one season. Herbig contract was as egregious as DK Metcalfs. Those contracts are likely the reason Joey is asking for what he is.

These professional athletes would have a hard time working side by side for the 8-16 hrs that domestic professionals put in in the trades. Even in my 50’s as a plumber, I constantly worked the 20 / 30 year olds into the ground.

There is an art to knowing how to work and be highly productive at it, I’m sure the athlete has similar things as well.

Joey needs to show up / practice / play / shut the **** up / get the deal done / kick his daddy out of the negotiation room.

I try Drink, I try. These old contractors call me up and dont let me say no. They are pissed off that they have to find a new guy. But it’s slowly but surely happening!

I've got that same problem, old customers tell me they just can't trust anyone else. Hard to say no.!!!

It was a good offer maybe back in May. The market's been reset and $25 million is going to be $10 million below the highest paid CB by next summer. $30 million is the new starting point.

Lil Peezy should have been priority #1 for this reason. Steelers probably could have got him at 28 in April/May, and then paid less for each of Herbig, Washington and Benton after Joey set the high bar.

I don’t know I think his agent knew what corners were up for new contracts and already had in his mind to wait and see. Steelers knew it was going to be a process so they were probably trying to figure out things as well.

Steelers can free up whatever they need and have showed that. It just a matter of if they think that his contract is an overpay.

Part of the issue is that he has been on PUP not the Steelers desired approach to negotiations …

yeah im figuring jpj realizes that is asking like 34 so he isnt way behind.

Agree, you'd think daddy would know how the Steelers roll.
Realistically JPJ doesn't have a lot of leverage since he's under contract for this year and can be franchise tagged next year.
What's baffling is why they just gave Herbig an new contract for a ****-ton of money, which might be part of JPJ's motivation.

Porter was going to take this approach no matter what because the CB market exploded this offseason. The Steelers entered the offseason prepared to sign most of that draft class, what they weren't prepared for was to pay Porter as a top corner. Normally I'm on the team side when it comes to negotiations, but from the reports, it seems like the Steelers are way undervaluing him.
 
Its like Omar didn't learn from the Garrett & Parsons signings affecting the TJ contract value. This escalation was easily predictable and should have made Joey the #1 priority ahead of the very player friendly deals for Herbig, Washington and Benson.

You had quality starters in position with years left on their contracts and you gave Herbig $25 mill per.

Then you go low in the Porter negotiations apparently.

I truly wonder where Steelers starting point was in the Herbig negotiations. Apparently they valued a back up OLBer over a starting CB. Add on 2 over paid WRs you traded for and then gave more money. An aging vet CB you traded for and gave more money. It is what it is I guess.

The Steelers shouldn't let Herbig walk because they overpaid an aging Watt. Given they're stuck with Watt's contract, I see them moving on from Highsmith after the season because Herbig's big cap hit doesn't start until 2027. He'll be a starter.

Very true

However trading him to have draft capital next year when the team may have a need for the future at QB and also has already massively over allocated salary cap to the defense in general could be legitimate reasons for shopping him.

But that would likely require sign off from Art the mediocre who seems to enjoy overpaying the defense and not having a franchise QB.

Then he may get blasted by the league... while under contract he has zero leverage. If the team and league lets him slide with the back injury excuse, all is well... but if they press it, and they can... he either plays or ends up with millions in fines and loses his UFA status next season.

Some teams tolerate hold ins to salvage a relationship with a player... others push the issue, often ending up with the player being traded..

Porter has zero legal leverage right now.. its not the Bell situation because Bell never signed his franchise tag and wasnt under contract..

Porter is simply following what Jalen Ramsey did years ago to a tee.. including the faux back injury..

Since that time, several players got burned trying to replicate it with less accommodating teams..

If Porter holds out from this point forward, the Steelers are allowing it in order to salvage the relationship..
