Joey Porter Jr.............................. not dad

I don't understand how giving Porter $30 mill a year is over paying him. That is the current market value. His stats align with the other CBs that just ink $30 mill plus contracts. Everyone is complaining about over paying on other players as a reason not to ink Porter. Mind boggling. Give me Porter instead of Ramsey, DK or Pittman. When Porter plays out his contract this season and then signs for $30 mill plus somewhere else I guess that team will be over paying.....the market says other wise.

We now trade for older vets and over pay them. Year after year it seems. We finally get a guy who can man cover. Follows the #1 WR all over the field at times. It has been a few years sinve he gave up a TD and our front office has decided now is the time to tighten the purse strings.

Yeah I know his first season he led the league in penalties. Each year he has improved to the point he is on average with the other $30 mill guys. His ints are in the range of the other $30 mill guys also. Just pay the guy.🤷‍♂️

Also. We pay him $30 mill now....in a couple of seasons it will be peanuts. Isn't that what everyone else said aboit Watts last few bloated contracts? Smh

The only thing has to be him wanting more than that. Or his agent who also represents the other holdout CB. Trying to reset the market I guess. Agents are the Debil.

DK Metcalf 4 years, $132 million
Michael Pittman 2 years, $35 million
Pat Freiermuth 4 years, $48.4 million
Darnell Washington 4 years, $42 million
Rico Dowdle/Jalen Warren combined for an average of $12 million/year

Omar Khan has used 10 of 15 draft picks in rounds 1-3 on offensive players. The Steelers are investing in the offense, we just haven't seen them re-sign guys they drafted like they are on the defensive side of the ball right now. That doesn't excuse overvaluing outside additions (Queen, Ramsey) or overpaying aging vets on the downside of their careers (Watt), but building through the draft and keeping these guys for a second contract is the way to build. The missing QB is still the single biggest thing holding this team back.

Great points

Add DK and Muth to the over paid list, and possibly Washington if not deployed correctly

2 backs for 12 million when they are both about 1000 yard rushers seems like a solid positional depth investment.

2 competent backs helps lessen damage to the offense from an injury and beats having 1 back making 10 million per (14 RBs making 10 mill or more- so almost half the league)…especially if that back goes down

Muth over paid? Really? Sure....resign him to the contract the Steelers did and then simply take him out of the offensive game plan. Is that over paying him or the front office being stupid?

I know some are saying that’s an overpay, that definitely is not my point…that it would be an overpay vs the market

My angle is it may very well be an overpay from what the system requires of the position AND that they can’t possibly ever break the cycle if they keep paying so much money to the defense in an offensive league. At some poont they really need to shift where the money goes.

To me $30ish IS his market value

But what is his value to the Steelers?

Could he become a first round pick (that would be my minimum for a trade scenario) that could be used in a package deal to secure a franchise QB? I would consider that more beneficial than his presence on the D.

If the position only requires a 10-15 per CB then no matter his market value it would be an overpayment for the Steelers.

Meh.....every system needs man coverage lock down corners. Simply Pay Porter.

Semantics

His pay does not match his productivity

To me that is overpaying, or underutilizing as your are eluding to

He blocks like *** so that to me limits his utilization and as a one trick pony that backup TE would be an overpayment.

Hopefully they utilize him to a point that justifies his contract with a coaching staff that isn’t in remedial school.

His contract was decent when he was a focus of our offense. It is on the front office and HC when you sign him to the contract they did off of prior production and then simply take him out of the system the following years. It isn't like they gave him what they gave Watt and Watt simply hasn't produced up to the $$$$. Now imagine if they signed Watt to what they did....then didn't use him. Had him standing on the sideline. Would that be Watt's fault? That is what they did to Muth. That isn't on Muth. That is on the FO and HC.

The front office doesn't make the offensive game plan
They work hand in hand though. Somewhere they gave Muth his contract and then decided not to use him. Obviously I put the blame on the HC. There is no way they extend Muth to his deal without the consent of Mike. Mike then decided not to us him. Not to use the middle of the field. It is what is what it is. To say Muth was over paid ......with his past production and then take him OUT of the gameplan all but completely.....meh....Muth sign a good contract. It is on the HC to add him to the game plan. My take anyway.

AS system required blocking
Muth is *** at blocking
He became insignificant in the scheme

Thus he is overpaid and/or underutilized

Underutilized because his skill set is one dimensional and overpaid because they signed a one dimensional TE. The underutilized would definitely be his fault because he is one dimensional and the overpaid the FOs fault for giving him that $$$

Little comparison to Watt as he is hardly one dimensional forcing him to be underutilized. Now if Watt couldn’t tackle or stop the run and was a pass rush only one trick pony then he too would be one dimensional and a liability in an aspect of the game forcing underutilized situation too, that doesn’t seem to be case though as he got paid and they get maximum usage out of him. He’s just getting older and past his peak…which to me is entirely different than Muth.

That’s a whole other can of worms of how the Steelers pay stars for past performances

He may not be overpaid in MMs offense. Time will tell. He could have a blowout year or a insignificant year. Just don't know yet

Did his skill set change? They signed him to a contract extension knowing what they were getting. Then didn't use him. Now Washington got extended. Is he over paid? Is he one Dimensional also? 57 catches for under 600 yards in three seasons? Muth gets $12 mill a year. Washington now $10 mill. One catches balls. The other blocks. In your eyes one is overpaid..also one dimensional. Smh

Outside of the actual title of "All Pro" or "Pro Bowler," JPJ matches up in every statistical category with most of the other top young CBs in the NFL right now. Contracts are exploding right now and in 2-3 years, top CBs will be making over $40 million. It's hard to find great CBs and the Steelers have one right now. Lock him up for one more contract. Elite CBs is one position we see in common with many of the Super Bowl contenders.
